Technologies Bridging the Digital Divide

The document discusses two emerging technologies that can help close the digital divide. The first is Microsoft's "White Spaces" technology, which uses low-powered television channels to provide internet access to 80% of rural Americans currently without it. The second is an interactive broadband map that identifies internet access gaps and allows people to check provider availability at their address. Both aim to expand broadband access to underserved areas.

Closing the Divide

1) One emerging technology that can be used to close the digital divide is a technology created

by Microsoft called, “White Spaces.” This technology will use “low-powered television channels

to cover long distances.” Microsoft’s goal is for this technology to reach 80 percent of

Americans in rural areas who don’t have internet access.

2) Another emerging technology that can be used to close the digital divide is an interactive

broadband map. This technology provides maps and other features to help people figure out

different internet gaps in different areas. It will also allow people to search their address and

figure out the number of internet providers in their area.
