The speed is 250 rpm and a turning moment of 15 kN-
m is to be transmitted by the rim. Determine.
(i) The diameter of the bolts at the hub and near the rim.

(ii) The cross-sectional dimensions of the rectangular shrink links at the rim σtl =40 MPa, w = 1.25h.
(iii) The cross-sectional dimensions of the elliptical arms at the hub and
rim if the wheel has six arms. σta = 15 MPa, minor axis being 0.5
times the major axis and the diameter of shaft being 150 mm. Assume density of the material
of the flywheel as 7200 kg / m3

(b) Design and draw a cast iron flywheel used for a four stroke I.C engine developing 180 kW at 2
40 rpm. The hoop or centrifugal stress developed in the flywheel is 5.2 MPa, the total fluctuation
of speed is to be limited to 3% of the mean speed. The work done during the power
stroke is 1/3 more than the average workdone during the whole cycle? The maximum torque on th
e shaft is twice the mean torque. The density of cast iron is
7220 kg/m3.
15. (a) Design the various components of a valve gear mechanism for a horizontal diesel e
ngine having the following specifications: Brake power = 10 kW; Bore = 140
mm; Stroke = 270 mm; Speed = 500 rpm and maximum gas pressure = 3.5 N/mm2 Th
e valve
opens 30º before top dead centre and closes 2º after bottom dead centre. It opens and closes with
constant acceleration and deceleration for each half of the lift. The length of the rocker arm on eit
her side of the fulcrum is
150 mm and the included angle is 135º. The mass of the valve is 0.3 kg.

(b) Design a rocker arm of I-
section made of cast steel for operating an exhaust valve of a gas engine. The effective length
of the rocker arm is
250 mm and the angle between the arms is 135º. The exhaust valve is
80 mm in diameter and the gas pressure when the valve begins to open is
0.4 N/mm. The greatest suction pressure is 0.03 N/mm2 below atmospheric. The initi
al load may be assumed as 0.05 N/mm2 of valve area and the valve inertia and friction loss
es as 120 N. The ultimate strength of cast steel is 750 MPa. The allowable bearing pressu
re is
8 N/mm2 and the permissible stress in the material is 72 MPa.

PART A — (10 2 = 20 marks)
1. Write a short note on different types of fits.
2. The maximum load on a petrol engine push rod 300 mm long is 1400N. It
is hollow having the outer diameter .25 times the inner diameter. Spherical seated
bearings are used for the push rod. Find the suitable size of a push rod, if E is 10 GPa and
factor of safety as 2.5.
3. List out the design consideration for a piston.
4. State the effect of ‘I/r’ ratio on piston.
5. Suggest a suitable manufacturing process for a crankshaft.
6. At what angle of the crank, the twisting moment is maximum in the crank shaft?
7. List out the functions of a flywheel.
8. Derive an expression to compute coefficient of fluctuation of speed for a flywheel.
9. State the material property that are necessarily required for inlet and exhaust valves.
10. State the importance of wahl’s factor in the design of helical spring.
PART B — (5 16 = 80 marks)
11. (a) (i) What is meant by ‘hole basis system’ and ‘shaft basis system’?
Give examples; Which one is preferred and why? (8)
(ii) A journal of basic size of 75 mm rotates in a bearing. The
tolerance for both the shaft and bearing is 0.075 mm and the
required allowance is 0.10 mm. Find the dimensions of the
shaft and the bearing bore. (8)
Or
(b) (i) What is meant by ‘stress concentration’? How do you take it
into consideration in case of a components subjected to
dynamic loading? (6)
(ii) A steel cantilever is 200 mm long. It is subjected to an axial load which varies from 150 N
(Compression) to 450 N (Tension) and also a transverse load at its free end which varies
from 80 N (Up) to 120 N (Down). The cantilever is of circular cross section, it is of diameter
2d for the first 50 mm and of diameter d for the remaining length. Determine its diameter
taking a factor of safety of 2.
Assume: Yield stress = 330 MPa; Endurance limit in reverse loading = 300 MPa; Correction
factors = 0.7 in reversed axial loading and 1.0 in reversed bending; Stress concentration factor
= 1.44 for bending and = .64 for axial loading; Size effect factor
= 0.85; Surface effect factor = 0.90; Notch sensitivity index = 0.90.

12. (a) Find the dimensions of an I-section connecting rod for an IC Engine having the following
specifications: Diameter of the piston = 120 mm; Mass of the reciprocating parts = 2.5 kg;
Length of the connecting rod = 350 mm; Speed of the Engine = 1800 RPM; Maximum
explosion pressure = 3 N/mm2 Stroke length = 180 mm.
The flange width and the depth of the I-section rod are in the ratio of 4t:6t, where t is the
thickness of the flange and the web. Assume yield stress in compression for the material as
330 MPa and a factor

(b) A four stroke diesel engine has the following specifications:
Brake power = 5 kW; speed = 1200 RPM; Indicated mean effective
pressure = 0.35 N /mm2; mechanical efficiency = 80% Determine

suitable flywheel with rim section having width four times the depth
so that the hoop stress does not exceed 4 MPa. Assume that the
flywheel stores 16/15 times the energy stored by the rim and that

is 2.3 times the work done on the gases during the compression and the work done during

±1%. Determine the mass moment of inertia of the flywheel.
15. (a) For operating the exhaust valve of a petrol engine, the maximum load required on the valve is
5000 N. The rocker arm oscillates around a pin whose center line is 250 mm away from
the valve axis. The two arms of the rocker are equal and make an included angle of 160°.
Design the rocker arm with the fulcrum if the tensile stress is 70
MPa and the bearing pressure is 7 N/mm2. Assume the cross section
of the rocker arm is rectangular. (16)

(b) It is desired to design a valve spring of IC Engine for the following data : Spring load when
valve is closed = 80 N; Spring load when
valve is open
= 100 N; Space constraints for the fitment of spring are: Inside guide bush diameter = 24 mm;
Outside recess diameter = 36 mm; Value lift
= 5 mm; Maximum permissible shear stress of spring steel = 350 MPa; Modulus of rigidity
= 84 GPa;
Find Wire diameter, spring index, Total number of coils, and Solid length of spring, free
length of spring and Pitch of the coil when additional 15 % of the working deflection is
used to avoid complete
