Takeaways from this example

See how to determine if Business Strategy & Tactics align with Team values
The first example focuses on the goals of a Sales Team , and by doing this worksheet exercise of placing
the Strategy & Tactics planned for a team next to their Values, you can see how you can align business
policies with their values to reinforce a culture that supports their Team Values (outlined above in
Column 4).

Your plan should include policies that:

● Reward team success
● Provide career development opportunities
● Have a strong focus on process and define worker objectives clearly
● Be organized with clear goals and milestone tracking.

ID areas where the Business Strategy & Tactics are not in line with a Team's values
In the second example, we have outlined goals for the Product Development Team , and there are some
more obvious gaps. You will see that tactics like a tightening of the process -- including stricter release
timelines and weekly meetings -- seems at odds with this team’s culture of Autonomy and freedom
from rules (their expressed Team Values). You are likely to face resistance when trying to convert these
autonomous pragmatists into brainstorming collaborators. Consider going back to the strategy and
tactics to revise your plan to better fit the people on your team.

For example, might you might consider:

● Something similar to
Google’s 20% Time Policy
that gives employees the opportunity to work
on side projects.
● Highly organized development processes that help the devs feel in control.

Use this 36 Values Cheat Sheet to ID those values that best represent shared values of your
teams
These 36 values come from years of academic research and are the same values used in our Personal
Values Assessment. You can take our 7-minute Assessmentnow. When an individual completes our
Assessment, they are asked simple questions that ultimately ranks all 36 values from most important
to least important at work.

As you complete your own strategy - culture alignment worksheet, you will make some assumptions
(and quite frankly, there are times you will have to guess) what each of your team’s value most from
the Values Sheet, and what is not
important to them. (see Key Values Sheet below)
36 Key Values that Employees Hold Around Work

Now it's your turn:

Complete your own worksheet to see how well your strategy fits your culture

1. Fill out the Team, Goal, Strategy and Tactic fields for a department
(see template below)
2. Using the Values Cheat Sheet, select the Top 5 Values held by the team responsible for delivering
on each goal and add them to the Team Values column.
3. Evaluate how well these Values support (align) with the recommended strategy and tactics for each
goal.
4. Consider ways you can revise your strategy and/or tactics to take advantage of the Team Values.
Based on what you know about what is important to your team, will this strategy resonate? Should
you go back to the drawing board to rethink your strategy to improve the likelihood of success in
reaching your goal?

But how do you

know
what a Team values highly?
We believe it's possible to
measurethe values held by your people (As you have probably figured out
for yourself doing this worksheet exercise, trying to
guess
what your people value is hard).

strategies and tactics are designed to take advantage how his or her team is wired.
