Exercise 6: Dew point and bubble point calculation

Assignment 1
We are flash distilling a mixture of ethanol and propanol. This mixture is ideal and
has a constant of relative volatility αEP equals to 2.10. The feed to the flash still is
100 kmoles/hr containing 0.6 mole fraction ethanol. Your supervisor wants to know
the effect of varying the ratio V/F. Find the composition of the liquid and vapor
leaving the still for values of V/F = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0.

a) Find the solution analytically. No graphs allowed.


b) Solve the problem graphically. This will require a y-x plot for αEP = 2.10.
c) Plot compositions of vapor and liquid leaving the still versus V/F for part b.
d) We desire an outlet liquid composition of 0.5. What value of V/F do we use to
obtain this? Solve graphically.

The gas stream of a partial condenser has a composition in Methane, Ethane, n-
Butane of resp. 0.30, 0.69, 0.01. In the condenser there is a temperature of 230 K.
Which is the pressure inside the condenser? Tipp: dew-point.

Assignment 4

a) Calculate the dew point and the bubble point pressure of a mixture of 0.05
Methane, 0.55 Ethane, and 0.40 n-Butane when the temperature is 220 K.

b) Calculate the bubble point temperature of the mixture for a pressure of 3 bar
(accuracy: 1 °C).

c) Verify that when the feed composition of Methane, Ethane, n-Butane is resp. of
0.05, 0.55, 0.40, and in the flash reactor there is a pressure of 3 atm and a
temperature of 220K, the stream going out of the flash reactor are in a liquid-
vapor equilibrium.

d) Calculate the relative amount of the leaving gas with respect to the feed and the
composition of all the streams.
