Solution 2.1: MY 211 - Metallurgical Thermodynamics and Kinetics Batch: 2018

The document appears to be from a materials engineering course and contains sample solutions to assignments. It includes solutions to 5 sub-problems that classify different material systems as unary, binary, homogeneous, heterogeneous, closed, open, reacting or non-reacting. It also distinguishes between extensive and intensive variables, and identifies mechanical work and heat as process variables.

SOLUTION 2.1
a) In simple copper bar, there are precipitate present as second phase. It
may be treated as a binary, heterogeneous (Two Phase), closed, non-
reacting otherwise simple system.

b) Ice water consist of two phases, solid and liquid. Both phases are fixed
composition. This system may be treated as unary, heterogeneous,
closed, non-reacting otherwise simple system.

c) Yttrium stabilized zirconia furnace tube may be considered as a binary

system, heterogeneous (Two Phase), closed, non-reacting otherwise
simple system.

d) Styrofoam coffee cup has fixed composition. It may be appropriate to

treat it as unary, Homogeneous, closed, non-reacting otherwise simple
system.

e) Eutectic system consists of alternating layers of two phases, each of

which is a solid solution. The problem also imposes a centrifugal field on
the rotating part. Thus, this is a multicomponent, heterogeneous, closed,
non-reacting system in a centrifugal field (Complex).

SOLUTION 2.4
Mechanical work and Heat are process variables because they describe
quantitatively the transition between equilibrium states of a thermodynamic
system.
