INTRODUCTION

This assignment was given by the class teacher, on different religion celebrations. However my subject
teacher assigned me to prepare a booklet on all the celebrations of a HINDU Wedding.
Hindu Wedding
Weddings are celebrated of love and commitment and can also be celebrated by couple’s religions and
culture. One such ceremony that you will not be familiar with is a Hindu wedding ceremony. Whether
you’re invited as guest, attending as a member of the wedding party or are simply curious there are a
few of the Hindu wedding rituals and traditions you are expected to see.

The Wedding date is determine in the stars.


Before the wedding an auspicious time (known as the Muhurta) is fixed for the event. Using the bride
and groom’s date of birth, astrologists calculate the positions of planets and stars to reflect the celestial
union of the couple. During the ceremony the gautra of both bride and groom (going back at least three
generations) are announced. A gautra is the ancestral lineage original clan (this is not related to caste or
religion).In Hindu law or marriages should not take place in same clan.

1. There’s a pre-party call Sangeet, is celebrated a few days before the


wedding.

There’s a pre party called the sangeet where the family comes together to sing, dance and revel in joy of
the upcoming union. Family members can also give performance. The bride’s family sings a traditional
folk song to the grooms’ family to welcome them. The sangeet, which translate to”sung together”, takes
place a few days before the mehendi ceremony that kicks off the wedding itself.

2. The bride hands and feet are adorned with henna paint during a mehendi
ceremony.
During the menendi ceremony henna is used to apply intricate design to the bride hands and feet. The
menendi ceremony usually take place one day before the marriage would be held, as the application can
take hours.

3. The couple wed under a Mandap.

The wedding mandap is a temporary structure constructed for the purpose of the marriage ceremony. It
may appear on an elevated platform, and is decorated with anything from flowers and greenery to
fabric and crystal.

4. A fire burn in the center of the Mandap.

In the center of the mandap, or wedding alter, a fire is lit. A Hindu marriage is a sacrament not a
contract. To signify the viability of the ceremony, fire is kept as a witness and offering are made. The
bride’s brother give three fistfuls of puffed rice to the bride as a wish for his sister happy marriage. Each
time, the bride offers the rice to the fire. This offering is known as a homan.
5. The couple exchange floral garlands during the Jai Mala.

This is part of the ceremony during which the bride and groom exchange floral garlands. This expresses
the desire of the couple to marry each other.

6. The father of the bride pours water through the bride hands as he give her
away .

The moment the father gives the bride away this is known as kanyadaan. In the Hindu tradition, no man
can claim a woman until she is offered. During the ceremony the father of the bride place his daughter
hands, into the groom’s hands as a gesture of giving her away. The father of the bride may also pour
water into the bride hands which will flow into her finger and into the hand of her groom.
8. The bride and groom garments are tied together as they circle the fire.

During the saptapadi the bride and groom have their garments tied together, in south India, the couple
walks seven steps together to signify their friendship. In north India tradition they make seven circle
around a ceremonial fire, each round signifying a specific blessing they request of the gods. The main
significance of sapatapadi is establishing friendship, which is the basis of Hindu marriage.

8. Red power is applied to the bride’s hair signifying she is married.

Sindoor a red orange powder is applied to a part of a woman hair symbolizes her new status as a
married woman. The same thing occurs with the groom depending on the tradition.
9. The brides wears a red dress called Sari.

The bride’s garments will also be red. In Indian culture, red symbolize the rising sun, prosperity and
fertility.

10. The groom wear a Sherwani.

A sherwani is a long garment which resemble a Achan and is very popular among men it is a famous
wedding outfit. A Sherwani signifies the rich traditional fashion style of India. It also signifies elegance
and style.
11. Hindu wedding rituals begin with a prayer to Ganesha

The ceremony begins with a prayer to Ganesha, the god of beginning and good fortune and the remover
of obstacles. Salutations are offered so that Ganesha may pave the way for the couple's married life.

12. Cords are tied on the wrists of the bride and groom during Raksha Bandan

Cords are tied to both the bride and groom hands. Marriage is considered to be an arduous stage in life,
and the cord are meant for protection.

14. The groom adorns the bride with a necklace called Mangala Sutra.

The groom places a necklace of black and gold beads on the bride. Traditionally, Lashmi the Hindu
goddess of wealth, fortune and prosperity, is invoked in the Mangala Sutra and the bride is said to
receive blessings throughout her marriage life.
Tilot dig dutty

Tilot dig dutty or maticore the term maticore is dervive from matichoor ladoo, and sweet that is
traditionally made for special occasions particularly weddings. Performed at the respective home of the
engage couple, the matriarchal half of each parental unit will performed a series of rituals in which she
prays for the successful marriage of her son or daughter marriage. During the ritual a combination of
flower, spices, incense and other Pooja items are placed into a hole dug from the earth, hence the dutty
or in Caribbean words dirt. This offering made to the earth which symbolize fertility and blessing.

The dye rubbing ceremony

The dye rubbing ceremony turmeric powder and dye mixed with oil are used to anointed onto the
bodies of the bride and groom two cycle one in the morning and one in the evening. The turmeric which
is believe to have the to avert evil. Once anointed with the rub, also known as the haldi, the individual
cannot leave the perimeter of his or her home and risk nullifying the purification. The anointment
administers a purification bath in which the bride is anointed first, after which the groom is
anointed with the remaining turmeric rub from his bride

.15. After the wedding


After the Hindu wedding is complete the bride leaves for the via groom’s car. The bride two sister also
come with the groom’s family, when they arrive the groom’s house where Hindu family members of the
groom welcome the newly wedded couple in a ritual known as grihapravesa.

The kangan is the day the girl return to her parent home, is also the day their fast is broken as they feast
on meat and celebrate. The girl return to her husband residence until the following Sunday second
Sunday. The second Sunday is where the family come together and party all day they usually have
music, dancing and alot of drinking

CONCLUSION:
After scrutinizing the three main religions in Guyana, I can firmly conclude that a Hindu wedding have
the most celebrations. I have personally learnt so many things that was never told to me growing up,
also one can be married not legally, but religiously.
