Tutorial 1 : DC Machines and Induction motors

Question 1: As shown in Figure 1. A 6-pole, long-shunt lap-wound compound


generator delivers a load current of (50 A) at (500 V). The armature resistance is (0.03
Ω), series field resistance is (0.04 Ω) and shunt field resistance is (200 Ω). The brush
drop may be taken as (1V). Determine the e.m.f. generated. Calculate also the no. of
conductors if the speed is (1200 r.p.m) and flux per poles (0.02 Wb). Neglect armature
reaction.

Question 2: A 20 KW shunt generator having an armature circuit resistance of 0.75
Ω and a field resistance of 125 Ω. generates a terminal voltage of 250 V at full load.
Determinate the efficiency of the generator at full load, assuming the iron, friction
and windage losses amount to 900 W.

Question 3: A 200 shunt motor having an armature resistance of 0.2 Ω carries an


armature current of 50 A and runs at 960 r.p.m. If the flux is reduced by 10%, find
the speed, assuming load torque remains the same.
Question 4: A DC series motor is running with a speed of 900 r.p.m while taking a
current of 20 A from the supply. If the load is changed such that the current drawn by
the motor is increased to 50 A, calculate the speed of the motor on new load. The
armature and series field winding resistances are 0.5 Ω and 0.4 Ω respectively.
Assume the flux produced is proportional to the current. Assume supply voltage as
250 V.

Question 5: 4-pole, 50-Hz. Calculate motor speed when an induction motor has a full

load slip 3.4 %. Ans( 1449 rpm)

Question 6: 208-V, 10-hp, 4-pole, 50-Hz, induction motor has 5% full load slip.

(a) What nsync of this motor? Ans( 1500rpm)

(b) What nm of this motor at the rated load? Ans(1425 rpm)

(c) What nfre of this motor at the rated load? Ans( 2.5Hz)

Question 7: A 208 V four pole 60 Hz Y connected wound-rotor induction motor is


rated at 30 hp. Its equivalent circuit components are
R1 = 0.100 Ω R2= 0.070 Ω XM= 10.0 Ω
X1 = 0.210 Ω X2 = 0.210 Ω
Pmech = 500 W Pmisc= 0 Pcore= 400 W
For a slip of 0.05, find
(a) The line current ( 78 ˪ -22.8 ̊ A)
(b) The stator copper losses (1825 W)
(c) The air-gap power (24.08 kW)
(d) The power converted from electrical to mechanical form (22.88 kW)
(e) The induced torque (127.4 N.m)
(f) The load torque (122.3 N.m)

Question 8: A 20-hp, 110-V, 6-pole, 50-Hz, split-phase induction motor has the
following impedances:

The core losses of this motor are 35-W,(friction, windage and stray losses) are 16-W.
The motor operate at rated voltage & frequency with open starting winding. Motor
slip is 7%. Find:

d) Input power i) Load torque
e) Air gap Power j) Efficiency

Question 9: A 480-V, 60 Hz, 45-hp, three phase induction motor is drawing 55A at
0.88 PF lagging. The stator copper losses are 20 kW, and the rotor copper losses are
600 W. The friction and windage losses are 800 W, the core losses are 1800 W, and
the stray losses are negligible. Find the following quantities:
a) The air-gap power PAG.
b) The power converted Pconv.
c) The output power Pout.
d) The efficiency of the motor.

Question 10: The input power to a 3-phase a.c. motor is measured as 5kW. If the
voltage and current to the motor are 400V and 8.6A respectively, determine the
power factor of the system? Ans. (0.839)

Question 11: Two wattmeters are connected to measure the input power to a
balanced 3-phase load by the two-wattmeter method. If the instrument readings are
8kW and 4kW, determine (a) the total power input and (b) the load power factor.

Question 12: Two wattmeters connected to a 3-phase motor indicate the total power
input to be 12kW. The power factor is 0.6. Determine the readings of each wattmeter.

Question 13: Three loads, each of resistance 30, are connected in star to a 415 V, 3-
phase supply. Determine
(a) The system phase voltage, (b) the phase current and (c) the line current.
Ans. a) 240V, b) 8A, c) 8A.

Question 14: Three identical coils, each of resistance 10ohm and inductance 42mH
are connected (a) in star and (b) in delta to a 415V, 50 Hz, 3-phase supply. Determine
the total power dissipated in each case. Ans. a) 6.3kW, b) 18.87 kW
Question 15: A 415V, 3-phase AC motor has a power output of 12.75kW and operates
at a power factor of 0.77 lagging and with an efficiency of 85 per cent. If the motor is
delta-connected, determine (a) the power input, (b) the line current and (c) the phase
current. Ans) a) 15Kw, b) 27.10A c) = 15.65A

Question 16: A 400V, 3-phase star connected alternator supplies a delta-connected


load, each phase of which has a resistance of 30_ and inductive reactance 40_.
Calculate (a) the current supplied by the alternator and (b) the output power and the
kVA of the alternator, neglecting losses in the line between the alternator and load. A
circuit diagram of the alternator and load is shown in Fig.2
Ans) 13.86A b) 9.60 kVA.
