Course description: Spanish 102 is the continuation of SPA 101 for true beginners. The course is designed to provide
elementary reading, listening, writing and speaking skills in Spanish. It also introduces students to basic cultural
aspects of the Spanish-speaking world. To that end, students will be exposed to Spanish in different communicative
situations and they will be asked to interact with it in different manners, ranging from simply reacting to input to
negotiating their way through a task. Besides its emphasis on communication, SPA102 seeks to provide foundational
knowledge of grammar so that students gain the analytical skills necessary to develop more complex concepts and
expand their communication skills. Spanish will be the primary language of instruction. Most of the class time will be
spent on task-based, communicative activities, as it is a flipped classroom. That is why students must independently
study and review both vocabulary and grammar rules presented in the textbook and do their assigned homework before
coming to class. If a student needs additional explanations of Grammar in English, s/he can make arrangements to
meet the professors in their offices. The class will often feature pair and group work.

Objectives: Successful completion of this course will require approximately one hour of preparation and review
outside of the class for every hour of class. With adequate out-of-class preparation and active participation in class, by
the end of the semester, you will be able to:

● Converse in Spanish about different topics such as past events in your life, things you used to do, your eating
habits, emotions, doubts, geography, climate, animals, etc.
● Write in Spanish about all the topics mentioned above.
● Read brief passages about frequent topics and common cultural aspects of the Spanish-speaking world.
● Be familiar with history, art, cuisine, sports and lifestyle in the Spanish speaking world.
● Generalize knowledge to negotiate and resolve novel language situations.

Course Requirements:

1. Grades: The grade scale (percentage) is as follows:

100 – 94 = A 93 – 90 = A- 89 – 87 = B + 86 – 84 = B
83 – 80 = B- 79 – 77 = C+ 76 – 74 = C 73 – 70 = C-
69– 67 = D+ 66– 64 = D 63 – 60= D- 59 and below= F

Your final grade is weighted as follows:

Participation in class (both sections) 10% Compositions 10%

Co-Curricular Activities 5% Midterm exam 10%
Homework 10% Final Project 5%
Grammar Quizzes 15% Oral Proficiency 5%
Vocabulary Quizzes 15% Final Written Exam 15%

2. Attendance in all class sessions is absolutely required. Language acquisition is dependent upon constant oral
practice of the language vocabulary and grammar structures, which takes place in the classroom. You really can’t
afford any absences. However, each student is allowed a maximum of five absences (whether excused or unexcused)
to deal with unexpected events such as sickness. Should a student miss a scheduled quiz or exam, or fail to hand in an
assignment due to an absence, documentation from the relevant, official unit, such as a doctor or coach, will be
required for a make-up to be possible or a late assignment to be accepted. This documentation should be turned in
within a week of the absence(s). Students who miss more than five class periods will see their final grades docked in
the following way:

6-8 absences: final grade lowered by 1 letter, e.g. A --> A-

9-11 absences: final grade lowered by 2 letters, e.g. A --> B+
12-14 absences: final grade lowered by 3 letters, e.g. A --> B
15 or more absences: final grade lowered to an F.

Two tardiness or early departures count as an absence. Tardiness means arriving after the professor has started the
class. Also, be aware that if you miss a class, it is your responsibility to contact the instructor or a classmate
regarding the material covered in class and/or announcements made on the same day. It is also your
responsibility to keep track of your absences, grades and performance in the class.

3. Class participation. Students are expected to come prepared to class every day, and actively participate in it. Good
participation means that you use Spanish as much as possible in class, are proactive and attentive, have a positive
attitude, are prepared, listen respectfully to others, and actively contribute in individual, small group and whole class
activities and discussions. Simply showing up for class is not enough to earn a good participation grade; rather, your
presence should make a positive difference in the quality of the class. Just as participation will be rewarded, non-
participation and rude behavior (such as personal conversations, texting, doodling or sleeping, speaking in English,
etc.) will be penalized. Please be aware that both your professors teaching this course will evaluate your participation
throughout the semester and that both evaluations carry equal weight. Spanish is the only language spoken in this
class.

4. Exams. You will be given one midterm exam. You will also have one oral proficiency exam, one final project,
and one final exam at the end of the semester. Details for the oral exam and the final project are TBA. All exams have
to be taken on the scheduled dates – no exception! No make-up tests!

SPA102 MTWTHF
SPRING 2018

5. Quizzes. There will be several quizzes during the semester on vocabulary, grammar and usage marked in your
syllabus. The chapter quizzes (grammar & vocab.) are 15% of your grade for each category.

6. Homework. You should do the sections of the homework that correspond to the material to be covered in class.
You can find in Canvas further instructions for the daily homework. For the WileyPlus homework, you should use
your Wiley access code and the link provided above in order to access your online homework. You must submit all the
exercises before the due date. Don’t worry if you do the WileyPlus exercises wrong the first time because you can
resubmit your answers five times before the deadline without penalization. All homework assignments, some of which
may be drawn from the book or supplementary materials must be handed in on time. No late homework will be
accepted.

7. Compositions. Writing is a way to practice the material you are studying. In addition to the homework and online
activities, you will write some brief texts in Spanish. These texts will provide you with the opportunity to
communicate your ideas in Spanish.
You will write several paragraph-length texts outside of class and two in-class compositions based on the topics
covered in the textbook. For the in-class compositions, all students are required to submit a written revision after
receiving the instructor’s feedback on the composition. Failure to submit a revision will invalidate the grade received
for the original composition. If the revision does not include any changes based on the instructor’s feedback, the
original grade will be invalidated as well, resulting in a 0. Upon rewrite submission, the original composition should be
handed in with the updated version. More details TBA.
No late compositions or rewrites will be accepted. Please note that written work done outside of class is expected
to be your own work, without the help of others or the use of online translators (such as Google Translate).
Please read very carefully the policy on plagiarism in the Academic Honesty section below.

8. Co-curricular activities. Students are required to attend to at least 2 co-curricular activities of different kind,
organized by the Spanish Department (e.g. guest speakers, art exhibitions, etc.). After attending each activity, students
are required to type and submit in Canvas a short reflection (150 words) in Spanish about the event, no later than a
week. These activities will be announced either in class, on Canvas or in the Spanish department Twitter account:
@spanishfandm. Make sure to check it regularly for updates. Students have to attend one activity by the end of
February and another one by April 10. Any schedule conflicts should be brought to the professors’ attention right
away.

DIVERSITY AND INCLUSIVITY

We are firmly committed to diversity and equality in all areas of campus life. We believe that any kind of
discrimination is unacceptable, and we will do our best to promote an environment where everyone feels safe and
welcome. We are relying on the support and understanding of every participant in this class: we all have a
responsibility to be respectful of one another; we must not participate in, or condone harassment or discrimination of
any kind. This course affirms people of all backgrounds, belief systems, ethnicities, sexual orientations, gender
expressions and gender identities. If you prefer to be called a different name than what is on the class roster, please let
us know. Feel free to correct us on your preferred gender pronoun. It is our goal to support your positive and
successful experience in this course.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY
Students are required to uphold academic integrity in all courses at Franklin and Marshall College.
In brief, students are not allowed to cheat or plagiarize any work. Plagiarism consists of trying to pass somebody else’s
ideas as your own. It is against academic honesty and all cases will be reported to the Dean. The professor can resolve
your doubts as to what constitutes plagiarism. No kind of plagiarism will be allowed. All work must be ORIGINAL
(“help” from friends or classmates and the use of automatic translators will not be allowed and will be penalized). See

the “Academic Honesty” Section in the Catalog for more information. Cheating in exams or quizzes is also
unacceptable.

MANDATORY REPORTING OF SEXUAL MISCONDUCT

Your professor (as all faculty and staff at F&M) is a mandated reporter of sexual misconduct by federal law.
Mandated reporters who witness or hear about instances of possible sexual misconduct are required to report to the
appropriate person what they observed. Should a student want to report to a confidential resource, s/he could resort to
Counseling Services, Appel Health Services, the Director of Faith & Meaning, and the Sexual Assault Response
Line. All of these offices have individuals on staff whose licenses permit them to keep confidentiality. The best way
to reach these offices is to call the Sexual Assault Response Line (SARL), 24/7, at 717-560-7311. You can also contact
Kate Sneider, our Title IX Coordinator, at (717) 358-7178 or at ksneider@[Link].

Other types of illegal misconduct will be reported to Public Safety.

ACCESSIBILITY SERVICES
F&M provides information and support to students seeking accommodation including but not limited to seating and
testing arrangements. If you have any pedagogical and/or accessibility needs, please let me know as soon as possible
in the semester so that we take the appropriate measures to ensure an effective and positive environment for your
own learning and participation. For more information, visit [Link]
services.

MISCELLANEOUS

It is student’s responsibility to check their email and Canvas everyday.

No food or gum in class, please.
Coffee, water, and other (non-alcoholic) drinks are fine, however.
I love my smart phone, too, but…
Cell phones, iPods, iPads, or other personal electronic devices are not allowed in class unless indicated by your
instructor. Otherwise, please switch off (or silence) all such equipment and put it away.
Be nice!
Profanity, obscenities, and other inappropriate actions, behavior, or speech will not be tolerated. Any student who
engages in such behavior will be asked to leave (and will be counted as absent for the day).
