The "Gee Bee” name was derived from the initials ofthe manufacturers, Beginning in 1929 with biplanes, the Granvlles soon turned to construction of lowing sport aircraft, with a sideline excursion into a canard experimental machine, Competition types were the next step, and asthe result of early successes, work began during 1932 on the R-1 and R-2 racers, which were structurally quit similar, The R-1 was powered by a Prat & Whitney Wasp Sr. engine, rted at about 800 horsepower.
