Emerald Waters: Personal Statement
While growing up, I was never really sure on what profession I wanted to choose. I was very
indecisive and continued to change it up. All of the professions I was interested in included
helping others, but the thought of being a nurse never came across my mind. When I was in
10th grade at Booker High School, they offered a free nursing program at Suncoast
Technical College that BHS students could be dual enrolled in starting in 11th grade. I
decided to join the program. At the time I wanted to be a Pharmacist, realizing that it is
about 7 years of schooling, I assumed that working as a nurse in the time being would be
smart. Once I got into the program, I got settled in still having my mind set on studying
pharmacology. Then, on our first clinical rotation is when I fell in love in nursing and decided
that nursing is where I wanted to be forever.
Throughout my years of nursing school, I continued to learn more about the different
specialties and levels of nursing, which interested me even more. I finally graduated nursing
school July 18, 2019. I passed my NCLEX-PN Exam, then obtained my nursing license on
August 19, 2019. Currently, I am a student at State College of Florida Manatee-Sarasota,
pursuing an Associate of Science in Nursing degree. I look forward to completing all of my
classes, then eventually joining the nursing program. Outside of my college courses, I
currently work at Sarasota County Jail under Armor Correctional Health services as an LPN.
Working at the jail is always interesting and a great job to learn new things at, I enjoy it very
much.
I plan to be a Registered Nurse at the very least. I either want to receive my Bachelor of
Science in Nursing (BSN) or my Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN). Becoming a Nurse
Practitioner is a thought I keep in the back of my head because I am not sure if I would be
satisfied when the time comes of having my MSN. I am unsure of what school or schools I
would like to attend to obtain it.
After graduation, I am uncertain if I would like to remain in the correctional nurse setting or
to work in the hospital, or maybe both. I look forward to furthering my nursing profession in
the years to come.
