RASLAG Power Plant Tour Insights

The document is an activity sheet from Holy Angel University detailing a field trip taken by students to the RASLAG Power Plant in Mexico, Pampanga, Philippines. Information provided includes background on the solar facility, how solar panels convert sunlight into electricity, and the operational processes involved in transforming the solar energy into usable AC power distributed through the electric grid. Students expressed learning about how sunlight can be harnessed as an energy source and discussed both benefits and negative health impacts of long-term sun exposure.

Mission and Vision

Mission

Our mission is to harness and develop the potential available renewable energy sources using modern,
innovative and technological solutions without the adverse effect to the environment to provide clean,
sustainable and reliable electricity to its consumers

Vision

Better and sustainable future

C.

A solar panel is a collection of solar cells. Lots of small solar cells spread over a large area can work
together to provide enough power to be useful. Solar panels are devices that convert light into electricity. They
are called "solar" panels because most of the time, the most powerful source of light available is the Sun,
called Sol by astronomers. Some scientists call them photovoltaics which means, basically, "light-electricity."

The solar facility, built on a 5. 5-hectare site, is consist of 13, 500 photovoltaic solar panels and 70
inverters. the Philippines in 2016 has installed a total of 903 Megawatt of solar power under one of its
renewable energy laws. That number is expected to grow as more PV plants are set to open this 2017. the
country awarded 166 solar projects, including 150 grid-connected and 16 off-grid, with a potential capacity of
4,081 MW (4,077 MW grid-connected) of which only 903 MW was installed. Of the installed capacity, 900 MW
is connected to the grid while the off-grid projects totaled 3 MW in capacity. The country approved 755
renewable projects with a potential capacity of 16,948.98 MW of which projects totaling 4,521.74 were
installed.

2. OPERATION OF RASLAG POWER PLANT

Man devices used in RASLAG corp. used in converting and generating electricity are inverts and step
up transformers located in a 11 power stations through the power plant, these devices covert DC electricity to
AC electricity that can be used in our homes. Inverters convert the single current of DC multiple alternating
current of AC, transformers then turn the current to 13,800 volts to reduce power loss when electricity is
travelled to long distances, at about 23 megawatts was produced daily in the power plant, but before the
electricity delivered to the houses it will pass first to a substation, it regulates the electricity to 22 volts and pass
another transformer to be delivered to houses, electricity first will be tested by NGCP and produce it to
electricity companies of Central Luzon like PELCO, AEC and SFELCO for us to buy it.

• We’ve learned that the sunlight can really contribute for us to gain energy. Because we Filipinos, we just
know that sun can cause a lot of diseases and crisis. But the real thing is, it can actually help for us to gain
energy from it. It can help to light a lot of houses and barangays

• We thought that it will be just a simple visit, but we actually learned a lot from our visit in the solar plant. Every
process was discussed by the authorities in the RASLAG solar plant. They discussed to us the details that we
need to know how the sunlight can be transformed into a new gained energy.

• One of the negative effect that we saw is that it can cause skin diseases to the people. Also, because of too
much heat, it can also cause stroke
