Data that can vary, along a continuous range. Continuous data is measurable. A Person’s Height, Time in a race, Dog Weight, length of a leaf

Data that is not continuous and takes on certain values. Categorical data is qualitative. Gender(Male/Female), Hair Color(blonde, brown,
brunette, red, etc.)

Discrete

Data that is quantitative and qualitative; discrete data has certain, direct values. Number of Students in class, Rolling 2 Dice Results (2, 3, 4, 5,
6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12)

2. Foundation of Business Visualization

Guage will be used to measure the progress

Combo chart to see comparison between sales target and sales total and used to
compare two or more measure values on two scales.
Always use DISTINCT with count function if we have duplicate rows like
count(DISTINCT OrderId)
Line Chart is best when viewing data over time.
Scatter plot is best comparing two measure on single dimension and identifying
outliers, clusters
By default CartoDB map chart is displayed
Table can be used to display additional information
Histogram chart will be used to measure values on distribution by selecting
measure as a dimension. Salary ranges are formed automatically. Bar show
number of employees.

Distribution plot will be used to measure values on different dimension

Line Chart to display trend over time. Scatter plot to identify clusters, outliers
between 2 measures for a item.

Pie Chart to measure percentage contribution over the total. Work well with
limited number of unique values. TreeMap display hierarchal data treemap does
not support negative values

3. Understanding Dimensions and Measures

Dimension and measure shown in bar charts

Compare 2 measures with scatter plot
Intersection of 2 dimensions against one measure Pivot table can be used.

y-axis, third is the size of the buble

Line chart for time axis, 1 Dim multiple measures, 2 dim 1 measure

Guage, kpi and text image can have only measure values and bz of no dim no
grouping is available
Map chart either can have point or area data.
Treemap can have multiple hierarchal dims and one measure
To support multiple dimension on bar chart as by default only 2 dim are
supported. We can create drill down dimension in master item and use in bar
chart. Hierarchal Master dimension can be used for pie chart as well.
4. Create Master Items
Master dimension values can be colored t0 represent custom color scheme.
Dimension appear with assigned color, for dimension having no color will appear with
default color.

Value colors can be used to change colors. Individual values can be assigned with different
colors.
Other and null values can have different colors.
Colors don’t change automatically. We have to select library color as shown in above
snapshot.

Further to see individual value color effect we have to select by dimension color.
Unchecking library colors, we can again use single, 12 colors
This standard dimension color can be used in above charts.
Second reason is drill down master dimension.
Drill down dim can be added in a filter pane.
If a level has single value then the next level show automatically as there is nothing to select

In above case clicking job title will take directly to Fletcher’s employees and don’t show
supervisor level as it has only one value.
Third reason is Master Dimension and measure in saved expressions fx
Fourth reason is Build and edit visualization more efficiently using centralized assets.
Add a new measure to combo chart will open dialog shown in above snapshot
Master Items can be created in Master items panel using create button second from field
section clicking on field and clicking on icon shown below:

Third place to create master dim and measure from Data Manager – preview pane as shown
in below snapshot.
Editing master item as shown in below snapshot will not change master measure,
Only master item used in the current visualization will change.

Fifth reason Collection of well named reusable item for other users
Visualization can be added to master item. Such visualization can’t be edited directly.
It can be edited from Master visualization panel.
Tag will be shown with the master item while search indicating search matches with
the tag.

Gauge, KPI and Text cannot be used to select data as a filter. However other selections will have effect on these charts
6. Use Search Tool

Searching with ~ will match the degree of how many characters match. This is useful when we don’t know the exact spellings of the word.
It is called as Fuzzy Search

7. Create and Apply Bookmarks

Bookmark name contains- Sheet Name – Filters
Return button will appear if we click bookmark from stories slide to go back to story slide.

Search from dash board will search with bookmark title, description, location and filter selections.

Only exact string will search high expense will search relevant text but expense high will not search anything.
Delete bookmark from sheets view

Edit the title and description of bookmark from sheets view.

In Enterprise edition creating new bookmarks will be stored in My Bookmarks section.

User can edit/delete bookmarks in enterprise edition

8. Take Snapshot of Visualization
Right click on chart and open snapshot library and we can edit/delete snapshot as well.

Snapshots cannot be taken for filter pane.

Chart title cannot be edited in chart library

With edit icon we can adjust few properties but not all. As shown in below snapshot.
With snapshot icon on snapshot we can go to source edit chart and take snapshot again

Then use return button to go back to story

Deleting snapshot from library will not have any impact on story. A copy of snapshot has been embedded into story slide.
 9. Build and Play Stories

Effects can only be applied on bar, line and pie charts

Edit icon can edit few properties of the chart only

Any value will open a drop down to select value. Effect library can only be applied to pie, bar and line charts.

Go to source will take to the sheet just like hyperlink and return button to come back to story.
Sheet have two button reset selections and go to sheet

Stories can be play, Duplicate and deleted from sheets view

Both Qlik sense enterprise and Cloud use upload media button to upload local images and use on story.

Use Global Menu to export story to powerpoint in Desktop, Enterprise and cloud environment.

In powerpoint everything is displayed as an image. Filter panes and animated gifs are not exported in power point.

Effects library are also not exported.

Shapes positions also changed in power point. Text exported as text so it can be edited. Text in charts cannot be edited as it is exported as
snapshot.

10. Reload Data

Click Refresh and press load data to get changed data from Data Manager
Add/Delete New Column from Source to Qlik

Click Table press Edit Icon in Data Manager

Deleted table will be deleted after load data, Initially it will only be marked as Mark for Deletion

Data does not change from story, build using snapshots when we change source data. But changed from story which build using sheet library.

Table concatenated automatically when table have same no of fields and same field names.
Desktop edition store connection, whereas enterprise edition does not store connection in app but in separate connections.

11. Publish Apps

All app in streams will be shared, individual apps cannot be shared. To stop sharing, Use Unpublish, Remove App or Remove user using – sign.

12. Export App Content
Filter pane not exported

Export story don’t export magic effects shapes, shapes added have to be adjusted, resized.

Only Map chart does not have export data option.

Pivot table show data in group and blank column for column heading whereas tree map repeat parent data

Box plot show 3 sheets one sheet statistical column, one sheet show outliers

Pie chart show actual values in exported data even if map is based on percentages, need to format values in excel and calculate share manually

Tree map alternative dim and measure can only be toggle through exploration menu

Markers don’t change in alternative measures in combo chart through exploration menu it can only be done from Edit and drag drop

In publish app change dim using exploration menu, Apply button Is not available

15. Consideration when opening data from excel

Table loaded using data load editor need to be done with synchronize option to get data manager capabilities
Aggregare line can be removed using excel named area functionality

Merge cell should not be in excel data, Pivot Table also not supported, Multiple header lines are not supported
$ will appear for .xls whereas no $ for .xlsx

With lock data model viewer we can still zoom, scroll and restore zoom level

Try to correct data at source level first if we have access, secondly fix in data manager

Calculated field are shown with italic font and can be edited as well, Only Calculated fields can combine more than one columns

UnPivot (Shot-Wide) to (Tall_thin) and reverse back to pivot using undo pivoting button.

20. Data Manager Association and Concatenation

If drag a bubble significantly/quickly away or pressing delete icon will break the association, magic wand or bubble drag will repair the
association

Different field names will be associated if they have same data when data profiling is enabled
Fields will not associate if field names are different using data load editor or profiling disabled as in above snapshot.

If field names are different then the association name will be with the name of two keys which can be edited to a simple name.

Matching field name will have association of the single field only
Matching same field name association have a simple association name and orange color indicate a medium recommended because all data is
not in synch with in both fields.

Same field names but with different data will not join when data profile is enabled and to avoid the join field is renamed as shown above
If try to form a non recommended associaition, dragging a bubble will open above dialogue. Red color show the percent of data match between
the two tables. Association name can be edited.

Tables concatenate when have same number and same field names

Adding such table will break the existing association

Magic wand icon will solve the issue

Different fields can be mapped using edit mapping and fields button. Mismatch field name show ! sign
21. Chart Expression
First calculate dimension values and then aggregate measure values. Doing aggregation/calculations in data load
editor improved performance.
With no expression fx will remain black whereas with expression fx symbol will turn orange as shown in below
snapshot of properties window
Color Coding
Color expression can be mentioned using below methods when “The expression is color code” is checked.

Red(), ‘#F7A24D’,’indigo’,rgb(97,167,30)

22. Color in Visualizations

Default addition of colors, After 12 colors color start repeating.
Selecting persistent color checkbox will not change the colors after selecting filters.

Color by Master Dimension

In KPI and Guage color expression cannot have color codes as results but numbers
In Table, dimensions don’t have color expressions Only Measure values do have.

Table header cannot be colored only rows color can be changed

Guage color can be changed by selecting “Use Segments” checkbox

KPI color can be changed through expression by clicking “Add Limit” button

Box, Distribution and Histogram can have one color only. No expressions are available to this chart types.
23. Sorting Items in Visualizations

Small number of dimension values sort by default on dimension values alphabetically whereas large
number of dimension values are sort measure wise descending.
With no sorting option sort will be based on load order

Sort by expression is only available for Dimension in sorting section.

With one dimension and two measures all type of sort order is available in Bar and combo bar charts

With two dimensions and one measure we cannot change the sort order of a first dimension as show below

Only filter pane have sort by frequency option

Data and sorting options change automatically when changes in one area. In table it does not happen automatically.
The sort column will have arrow on header to change sort criteria

Changing sort order by clicking table header column OR through exploration menu and pressing Apply button will
change sort order permanently.

24. Format Numbers in Visualizations

Employee ID Dimension can be formatted with 3 zero in left using Dimension expression

Qlik treat date as numeric value which means Date – 30-DEC-1899(Your Date Minus(-) 30-
DEC-1899)
TO_DATE('16-NOV-2015') - TO_DATE('30-DEC-1899')= 42324

Time value is after decimal value

We can convert a non date field containing dates to date type in Data Manager, Also we can
change the date format here as well

Format mentioned in data manager can be override through expression in sheets, SET
statements overrided in Data Manager.
Line chart do not have sorting for continuous dates values
Month() = JAN,FEB
Monthnames() = Jan-Year,Feb-Year
Missing values on line bar are translated from adjacent values

Use Logrithmic scale for a very wide range of values

Stack Area added values on x and y scale.

Stack positive and negative values separately to show positive and negative
values separately with negative values below zero axis, With uncheck it
keep showing values by adding in previous measure.
Uncheck Show Legend Title checkbox to hide legend name
Handle missing values automatically, We can change from x-axis panel
Disable continuous and unchecking Use Continuous scale.
31. Scatter Plots
If we do not set data range between min and max we can drag chart to set
the min and max ranges of the chart.
For large number of data scatter plot will be shown in matrix with blocks
containing number of customers

Block size can be changed using compression resolution.

TO return to bubble view data size should be in between 1000 values.
32. Distribution Plots
Presentation have 3 option to display

Distribution plot explains average sale in details by showing data in

different ranges.
Distribution plot trends can be compared with scatter plot
We can add alternative dim and measures.
33. Create Pie Charts
Change color by dimension and measure and it can be changed as well.
Color can be changed by expression as well.
34. Create Treemaps

Filters can be applied on top level hierarchy by selecting single top level
dim we can select dim below that top level dim.
In Region, Country and City we can select city by first selecting one region
then one country and then city.
Labels can be on/off

Limit value by using Limitation -> Exact Value option by expanding

ISO alpha codes may be used instead of country names to avoid data mismatch between Qlik Geo Data and our data.

If table data is not marked as map data as shown in below snapshot for Bedmuda Pointof Interst table, We can fix this issue using Data load
editor
If data is loaded with profiling disabled no fields will be available

If city names are not accurate we can use kml(keyhole markup language) file .

To load kml file data make profile option disabled as it is not required
Presentation - Auto Zoom Section option can be unchecked to stop zoom map after selecting data on map. Then we can use Home icon to
zoom in/zoom out OR Reset Zoom. The map automatically zoom after selecting data by clicking or using lesso tool.

Map can be zoom in/out using mouse scroll wheel

Slippy map background options can be added by using Background – Map Service option. URL and Attributions link will provide list of many
servers.

We can only use point or area map in simple map charts, Both are not supported. Using geo analytics we can use point and area maps.
42. Custom Point and Area Data
KML file can be generated from Google Earth software and then can be used in Qlik Sense to plot Area and Point information.

43. Introduction to Qlik Geo Analytics

Qlik Geo analytics is not free. Consists of two parts API, Connector.

Qlik GEO Analytics data can map data with country, city, state, provinces , postal code, air port code, counties and other regions. Supports map
data already stored. Supports multiple geo files: Geo JSON, ESRI JSON, GML, GML from WFS Server,Esri SHP, KML
Aggregate operations are used for large data sets to group or cluster points.
Geometric operastions are used for smaller areas, Supports (Dissolve, Intersects, Intersects Most, Within, Simplify)

Route Operation time and distance based
