Easter Island is located in the remote Pacific Ocean. It is famous for its large stone statues that were carved by the Rapa Nui people who settled there around 1600 years ago. Over time, the population grew very large, around 10,000 people, which put pressure on the island's limited resources and a civil war broke out. When Europeans discovered the island on Easter Sunday in 1722, they found the massive stone statues but the original Rapa Nui civilization had collapsed, with only a small number of inhabitants remaining.
