CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Academic procrastination is general phenomenon which occurs in Senior High

School student. According to a certain research, procrastinators often put off doing

things, leave them to the very last moment or sometimes even spend their time staring at

the wall. However, be careful, procrastination is not a synonym for lazy. In additional,

procrastination is a well-known phenomenon that often entails negative outcomes with

regard to performance and subjective well-being. When the definitions in the literature

are examined, academic procrastination can be expressed as the lack of timely fulfillment

of the responsibilities of the students related to the education process. (Katrin B. 2013)

There has been a number of research studies which point out the effects and

causes of procrastination. Some studies even went as far how procrastinating will can

get through when a person is doing it. In this research, it will help the readers to

understand what is procrastinating is, and how does it affect the students in their school

works and academic performances.

The researchers will be conducting a study on the significance relationship of

procrastinating school work in academic performances of senior high school students of

Krislizz International Academy. In general, academic procrastination behavior has

negative effect on students’ academic life (Balkıs & Duru, 2010; Saleem et al., 2015).

Background of the Problem

It is inevitable that students do have such of school works. But those tasks were

given on a given time to have a time to consume and finish their tasks on time. Tasks

and school works should be done on time. Procrastination is wide spread in academic

contexts, where students are required to meet deadlines for assignment completion in an

environment full of events and activities which compete for the students’ time and

attention. In adolescence period, academic procrastination behaviors, academic

motivation and school attachment are considered as important factors. Procrastination is

wide spread in academic contexts, where students are required to meet deadlines for

assignment completion in an environment full of events and activities which compete for

the students’ time and attention. In this period, possible behavioral addictions such as

internet addiction affect these three important factors directly or indirectly in

adolescents. However, active procrastinators prefer to work under pressure and make

deliberate decisions to procrastinate tasks, nevertheless, they usually complete their tasks

on time. (Chrisoula Anderuo, 2016)

Academic procrastination is an increasingly common problem especially among

secondary school students (Ekinci & Gökler, 2017). When explaining the reasons for

students’ procrastination behaviors, some researchers put emphasis on disliked-

academic-tasks (Saleem, Owaisi, & Tufail, 2015). One factor that affects academic

procrastination and academic motivation is internet addiction (Demir & Kutlu, 2017;

Saleem et al., 2015; Torun, Akçay, & Çoklar, 2015) Specifically, excessive internet use

of school-age youth increases their academic procrastination and decreases their

academic motivation by adversely affecting their psychological and physical

development (Demir & Kutlu, 2017; Savci & Aysan, 2017).

Statement of the Problem

This study entitled “The Significance Relationship Between Procrastinating

School Work In Academic Performances of Senior High School Students of Krislizz

International Academy S.Y 2019-2020” targets the idea whether procrastinating school

work is in relation to the academic 5performances of Senior High School Students.

Specifically, this study wants to seek the answer of the following questions:

1. Demographic Profile

 Grade Level

 Biological Sex

 Age

2. What is the level of procrastination of student in terms of :

a.) Anxious Procrastination

b.) Fun Procrastination

c.) “Plenty of time” procrastination

d.) Perfectionist procrastination

3. What is the level of academic performance?

4. What is the significant relationship between procrastinating school work and

academic performances

5. What is the significant differences between the level of procrastination of

students

Hypothesis of the Study

There is no significant differences between the level of procrastination.

Theoretical Framework

Currently, even though academic procrastination is an extensive and potentially

harmful phenomenon, there is still much information that needs to be examined and

understood. Research repeatedly shows that academic procrastination is a highly

complex human behavior that involves a combination of affective, cognitive, and

behavioral components and cannot be summarized easily (Brownlow & Reasinger, 2000;

Chu & Choi, 2005; Steel 2007). Due to procrastination's highly integrative nature, no

clear theory for academic developed. Even though a comprehensive theory for academic

procrastination has not been established, it’s theoretical roots are found in social

cognitive theory, attribution theory, and motivation theories. Each theory incorporates

the key principles of self-efficacy, self-regulation, and motivation, but each approaches

academic procrastination from a unique angle. (Janssen, Jill, Dissertation, Georgia State

University, 2015.)

RELATED REVIEW LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Introduction

The researchers have searched for relevant materials from various sources that

may benefit in conducting a research and found related studies and literature which may

give a background about the topic in question.

Foreign Literature

According to Dr. Piers Steel, procrastination is one of the self-regulatory

failures that can’t be explained until now; it is also a current and destructive behavior in

this era. So, Steel reviewed the relevant conceptual, theoretical and empirical works

resulting in correlational, experimental and qualitative findings. Based on 691

correlations, a meta-analysis of procrastination’s possible causes and effects shows that

neuroticism, rebelliousness, and sensation seeking show only a weak connection. Steel

also said that the following are the strong and consistent signs of procrastination: task

aversiveness, task delay, self-efficacy, and impulsiveness, as well as conscientiousness

and its facets of self-control, distractibility, organization, and achievement motivation.

“Continued research into procrastination should not be delayed, especially because its

prevalence appears to be growing.” (Steel, 2016)

Milana Knezevic said that procrastination is a student’s worst enemy; it is a

disease that eats away the students‟ productivity. An American study estimates that 70%

of students showed the signs of this behavior. “Students are biologically and socially

predisposed to put off until tomorrow what we should do today.”, “Aside from the cliché

that students are more impulsive, in your early 20s you're still developing your pre-

frontal cortex, home of the will power.” (Steel, 2016) (Knezevic, 2016)

LOCAL LITERATURE

Grace Shangkuan Koo, a columnist in the Inquirer newspaper, blogged

something about procrastination entitled as “Why do people procrastinate?” According

to Koo, procrastinating has to do with „estimation‟. Almost everyone procrastinates and

there are some more than others. She also said that people procrastinate or doing things

off when they overestimated the time they have or underestimated how long it takes to

accomplish a task. Also, people may overestimate their abilities and motivation,

expecting that things will go smoothly without a flaw. She also mentioned that people

uses all sorts of excuses to justify their procrastination: It’s either they do not know how

to complete or they really don’t know what needs to be done. Sometimes, they will say

that they are not in the mood or they forget. To blame others or waiting for the right

moment or for inspiration is also one of the excuses. Another thing that Koo expressed

in the blog is that people may also think that they can do better under pressure, waiting

until the last minute, believing they can finish on time and do other tasks. She mentioned

that there is a research who said that there are active and passive procrastinators: The

active ones are those who works under pressure and finishes the tasks on time while on

the other hand, the passive procrastinators are those who continue to wait and delay and

never get to accomplish their work. Perfectionism could also be the cause of

procrastination. “Unhealthy or neurotic perfectionists” aims at unrealistic high standards

and is afraid to fail. They are also paralyzed to even initiate a work. (Koo, 2013)

Another blog in the internet with a title of “Saka na, bukas na: Pinoy

procrastination” asks if we, the Filipinos, ever wondered how the timeless virtue

„Filipino time‟ originated? Do we know why did the grasshopper starved to death in the

story of “The ant and the grasshopper”? Do we also know why the hare lost the race

against the turtle? Based on this blog, it is because of the act of procrastination. The

Filipino way of saying it is “saka na lang” which is clearly the mañana habit we inherited

from our conqueror centuries ago. If we will look into reality, procrastinating is a thief

of time. Time is the only thing in this world that all of us can lose and never regain. By

procrastinating, an individual is at risk of wasting and killing the time. Unfortunately,

when the individual realizes this fact, he has already run out of time. He/she might try

not to give up by saying the famous line “bahala na” and hoping that there would be a

“later”. The conflict is that „later‟ usually ends up with a “never.” (2013)

Carla M. Mandap from Bulacan State University wrote an online journal where

she states that academic procrastination can be considered as behavioral, affective and

cognitive phenomenon which draws out from an individual’s fear of failure or task

aversiveness (Solomon & Rothblum, 1984). The fear of failure is related to low self-

confidence where individuals delay tasks because of the fear or belief that they will not

accomplish it. Students with high confidence can somehow respond positively to the

academic challenges despite the difficulty of work. (Mandap, 2016)
