The

Australian Training Visa – Subclass 407

Updated 09 January 2018

This visa is a temporary visa for applicants wishing to undertake occupational training in Australia.

The 407 visa aims to promote international goodwill by allowing Australian organisations to sponsor persons to
travel to Australia to participate in occupational training activities, including workplace-based professional
development activities.

The 407 visa is not designed to fill labour shortages, however, it does allow the visa holder to work for the
sponsoring organisation in the nominated occupation, whilst partaking in a structured training program.

Subclass 407 visa holders may be eligible to proceed to a TSS visa following completion of their training
programme.

Who can apply for the Subclass 407 visa?

This visa is available to applicants who have the support of a sponsoring employer, and who have 12 months of
work experience obtained within the last two years in the relevant occupation. Applicants can be in or outside
of Australia, and must be nominated by an Australian organisation that is lawfully operating within Australia.

How do I qualify for a Subclass 407 Visa?
There are three streams through which an applicant can obtain a 407 visa:

1. Workplace Based Occupational Training: This stream is suitable for applicants who have recent
qualifications and/or experience, who intend to take part in workplace-based training to enhance their
skills in their current occupation, area of tertiary study or field of expertise. An Individually Structured
Training Programme is required from the sponsoring organisation.

2. Training that promotes capacity building overseas: This stream is suitable for applicants who wish to
participate in a professional development training programme in Australia; students who need to
complete an internship as part of their qualification and government supported workplace trainees.

3. Work-based training for registration: Applicants hoping to gain registration/licencing as part of their
occupational requirements. This stream is applicable only for occupations that legislatively require
licensing either in Australia, or in the applicant’s country of passport.

All applicants must meet English language, health and character requirements.

The Training Programme
Generally, the training programme should comprise of at least 30 hours a week of training, and at least 70% of
that training must be conducted in the workplace.

It must be structured and individually tailored to the nominee, in line with DIBP’s requirement that the
workplace-based training be a unique employment-based activity for the individual nominee.

To be structured and individually tailored to the training needs of the nominee, the programme should:

> clearly differentiate between periods of practical work experience and periods of instruction and/or
observation
> outline the objectives, tasks and timeframes
> include an assessment of the nominated trainee’s current level of skill in the identified occupation and
> outline the additional or enhanced skills the applicant is aiming to gain.

The tasks to be completed and outcomes to be achieved should be consistent with the objectives of the
programme, include timeframes for completion, and show an increase in difficulty and complexity over the
course of the training programme to allow the nominated trainee to progress to a higher level skills capability.

It is expected that a structured training programme will include supervision by appropriately qualified and
experienced supervisors. An example of an appropriate qualification for a supervisor would be a Certificate IV
in training and assessment. Appropriate experience would be someone with specialised knowledge and
experience in the subject area, for example an architect with 10 years’ experience, including specific
experience in the area of the proposed training programme, would be qualified to supervise, train and assess
the learning outcomes of a junior architect.

DIBP will consider the supervisor-to-trainee ratio to ensure the training plan is individualised to the nominee.
The workplace-based training must be a unique employment-based activity for the individual nominee.

The training programme should include mechanisms for the learning outcomes of the applicant to be
monitored and assessed. Details of any qualifications that will be issued on completion of the training should
be outlined. This is because, although obtaining a qualification should not be the primary purpose of the
programme, it can be incidental to the programme.

If more than one organisation is providing workplace-based training, the training programme must specify each
workplace and its address, the training to be undertaken at each workplace and the dates of the training at
each workplace. Without this level of detail, the training programme cannot be considered to meet the
requirement that it is structured training.

Common Scenarios
My employer will sponsor me for this visa but only wants to provide part-time employment. Can I still be
granted this visa?

No. This visa requires that you work at least 30 hours per week for your sponsor.
