1.5 METHODOLOGY OF THE STUDY
Research in common parlance refers to a search for knowledge. It is a scientific and
systematic search for pertinent information on a specific topic. It can be also defined as a
systematized effort to gain new knowledge. In other words, research is the persuit of truth
with the help of study, observation, comparison and experiment.
Research methodology is a way to systematically solve the research problem. It may be
understood as a science of studying how research is done systematically. It comprises the
steps that are generally taken by the researcher in studying his research problem along
with the logic behind them. It is necessary for the researcher to design his research
methodology for his problem as the same may differ from problem to problem.
The research methodology adopted for this research study has been shown in the
following table:

1.5.1 TYPE OF RESEARCH
The research study conducted is of descriptive type. Descriptive research includes
surveys and fact findings of different kinds. The major purpose of such research is
description of the state of affairs as it exists at present. The main characteristic of this
method is that the researcher has no control over the variables; he can only report what
has happened or what is happening.
Studies concerned with specific predictions, with narration of facts and characteristics
concerning individuals, groups or a particular situation are all examples of descriptive
research studies.
1.5.2 TYPE OF DATA
Both primary data and secondary data have been used for the purpose of this study.
Primary data are those data which are collected for the first time, and thus happen to be
original in character.
Secondary data, on the other hand, are those which have already been passed through the
statistical process.
1.5.3 SOURCES OF DATA
Major part of the secondary data is collected from the internet. Also, partly by consulting
journals, magazines and publications like RBI Bulletin.
Besides this, as an instrument for collecting Primary Data, a survey has been done for
which questionnaire method is used. A questionnaire contains a set of questions relevant
to the study which is presented to the respondents to get answers.
1.5.4 SAMPLE SIZE
The survey is based on a sample of 100 persons which are taken from the Guwahati city.
1.5.5 SAMPLING METHOD USED
The study is based on two-stage sampling method where the first stage comprises cluster
sampling method and in the second stage simple random sampling has been used.
Under cluster sampling, the city has been divided into four clusters comprising of four
areas namely, Narengi, Noonmati, Chandmari and Silpukhuri. In the second stage, a
sample of 25 persons has been selected from each area by way of simple random
sampling.
