Geometric Means

The document discusses geometric means and harmonic sequences. It defines a geometric mean as the value between two terms of a geometric sequence, calculated using the formula √(ab). It also defines a harmonic sequence as a sequence formed from the reciprocals of an arithmetic sequence. Examples are provided to demonstrate calculating geometric means and identifying terms in harmonic sequences.

LESSON 1.

7 GEOMETRIC MEANS

OBJECTIVES:

 To define geometric means

 To understand the formula of a geometric mean

What is Geometric Mean?

Geometric Mean is a term used to describe the value between two terms of
a given geometric sequence.

The formula for computing the geometric mean is:

G   ab
Where,

a &b  two consecutive terms in a geometric sequence

G  geometric mean

EXERCISES:
1. Find the geometric mean of 4 and 3?

2. What is the geometric mean of 4, 8, 3, 9 and 17?

3. What is the Geometric Mean of  10, 51.2 and 8?

4. What is the Geometric Mean of  1, 3, 9, 27 and 81?

5. What is the Geometric Mean of 2 and 18?

LESSON 1.8 HARMONIC SEQUENCE

OBJECTIVES:

 To define harmonic sequence

 To determine the difference between harmonic sequence and arithmetic
sequence

What is Harmonic Sequence?

Harmonic Sequence is a term used to define a sequence that is formed by

the reciprocals of the term of a given arithmetic sequence.

EXERCISES:
1. If the sum of reciprocals of first 11 terms of an HP series is 110, find the
6th term of HP.
A.1/5
B.1/10
C.2/7
D.1/20

2. Find the 4th and 8th term of the series 6, 4, 3, …

A.12/5 and 4/3
B.7/10 and 5/7
C.1/7 and 3/4
D.20/11 and 9/8

3. The 2nd term of an HP is 40/9 and the 5th term is 20/3. Find the maximum
possible number of terms in H.P.
A.11
B,10
C.9
D.12

4. If the first two terms of a harmonic progression are 1/16 and 1/13, find the
maximum partial sum?
A.1.63
B.1.13
C.1.89
D.2.2
5. The second term of an H.P. is   and the fifth term is   . Find the sum of its
6th and the 7th term.
A.177/1547
B.145/1457
C.513/3233
D.117/3123
ANSWER KEY:

1. The sum of first 11 terms of an AP = [2a + (11 – 1) d] 11/2 = 110

⇒ 2a + 10d = 20 ⇒ a + 5d = 10

So, the 6th term of HP series is 1/10

ANSWER: B

2. Consider 1/6, /14, 1/3, ...

Here T2 – T1 = T3 – T2 = 1/12
Therefore 1/6, 1/4, 1/3 is in A.P.
4th term of this Arithmetic Progression = 1/6 + 3 × 1/12 = 1/6 + 1/4 = 5/12,
Eighth term = 1/6 + 7 × 1/12 = 9/12.
Hence the 8th term of the H.P. = 12/9 = 4/3 and the 4th term = 12/5.

ANSWER: A
3. If a, a + d, a + 2d, a + 3d, ……. are in A.P.then
are in H.P.

Now   and

Now

Hence the maximum terms that this H.P. can take is 10.

ANSWER: B

4. The terms of the HP are

So the maximum partial sum is

ANSWER: A

5.  If a, a + d, a + 2d, a + 3d, ……. are in A.P. then

are in H.P.
Now
and
Now
And

So the sum of the 6th and the 7th term of H.P. is  513/3233.

ANSWER: C
ANSWER KEY:

1. Using the formula for G.M., the geometric mean of 4 and 3 will be:

Geometric Mean will be √(4×3)

=√(4×3)

= 2√3

So, GM = 3.46

2. Step 1: n = 5 is the total number of values. Now, find 1/n. 1/5 = 0.2.

Step 2: Find geometric mean using the formula: (4 × 8 × 3 × 9 × 17)0.2

So, geometric mean = 6.81

3. First, we multiply them: 10 × 51.2 × 8 = 4096

Then (as there are three numbers) take the cube root: 3√4096 = 16

In one line:

Geometric Mean = 3√(10 × 51.2 × 8) = 16

4. First we multiply them: 1 × 3 × 9 × 27 × 81 = 59049

Then (as there are 5 numbers) take the 5th root: 5√59049 = 9

In one line:

Geometric Mean = 5√(1 × 3 × 9 × 27 × 81) = 9

5. First we multiply them: 2 × 18 = 36

Then (as there are two numbers) take the square root: √36 = 6

In one line:

Geometric Mean of 2 and 18 = √(2 × 18) = 6
