Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors have many applications in different
field of science and technology. Some applications are as follows:
Applications of Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors in Google
Page rank:
Since we have noticed that when we search in Google when get so many references and
suggestions yet we haven’t written the whole word or sentence. And a fact, those all
suggestions and references are somehow related to our search or they are frequently
searched by us. So, this is the major application which follows the Eigenvectors
Algorithm.
Dominant values
of Eigenvectors
PageRank (PR) is an algorithm used by Google Search to rank web pages in their search
engine results. The PageRank algorithm outputs a probability distribution used to
represent the likelihood that a person randomly clicking on links will arrive at any
particular page. PageRank can be calculated for collections of documents of any size.
That probability arrives from the weightage of each members and the weightage is
provided by dominant eigenvectors and its values. [1]
Applications of Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors in Economics
and Statistics:
Spectral clustering is a technique with roots in graph theory, where the approach is
used to identify communities of nodes in a graph based on the edges connecting them.
The method is flexible and allows us to cluster non graph data as well. [2]
So, if the enumerated data is given with high measurement of similarity among the data
points and our approach to have spectral cluster of the given data, it can be done by
standard clustering method follow by Eigenvectors of the Laplacian Matrix.
This method is helpful in determining Census, literacy or illiteracy proportion, women
and men ratio, population of vehicles, country’s stock exchange, industrialization rate
and so on.
Applications of Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors in Electrical
Engineering:
The application of eigenvalues and eigenvectors is useful for decoupling three-phase
systems through symmetrical component transformation. [3]
These can also be used to check the response by applying different initial conditions on
the circuit containing Capacitor, Inductor and Resistor. [4]
Applications of Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors in
Mechanical Engineering:
Eigenvalues and eigenvectors allow us to "reduce" a linear operation to separate,
simpler, problems. For example, if a stress is applied to a "plastic" solid, the deformation
can be dissected into "principle directions"- those directions in which the deformation is
greatest. Vectors in the principle directions are the eigenvectors and the percentage
deformation in each principle direction is the corresponding eigenvalue. [5]
Applications of Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors in Designing
Bridges:
The natural frequency of the bridge is the eigenvalue of smallest magnitude of a system
that models the bridge. The engineers exploit this knowledge to ensure the stability of
their constructions. [5]
