1. INTRODUCTION

1.1. Background of the rheumatic

Rheumatoid arthritis (AR), one of several rheumatic diseases is a systemic auto
immune disease that causes inflammation of the joints. The disease is characterized by
persistent synovium inflammation, a non-specific chronic proliferative synovitis. Over
time, bone erosion can occur, joint destruction and total damage. Finally, this condition
can also affect various organs of the body. This disease arises from many factors ranging
from genetic (hereditary) to our life style (smoking).
Rheumatoid arthritisis a disease that has been pervalent and involving all races and
groups firstly appeared in America and occured towards the women. Besides, it occured
to either in the middle age people or in the older people. In addition. 1, 5 million women
have rheumatoid arthritisis compared to 600.000 men. (Nasution, Rheumatoid Arthritis,
1996).

2. DEFINITION AND SYMPTOMS

2.1 Definition
Rheumatism or a disease characterized by joint pain is also called rheumatoid
arthritis. This disease is an autoimmune disease when a person's immune system attacks
the body's own cells. In this case, the joint area is the area that is attacked by the immune
system with rheumatoid arthritis. As a result, chronic inflammation and severe pain in
the affected joints occur. (Halodoc, 2019).
Rheumatoid arthritis (AR) is a chronic systemic inflammatory disease that is
manifested as progressive polyarthritis, but this disease is also related to all organs of the
body. (Peter, E. L., 2000)

2.2 The Symptoms

Symptoms and signs of AR can be seen as follows;
• Joint pain
• Joint swelling
• Joint pain when touched or pressed
• Reddish hands
• Limp
• Stiffness in the morning that lasts about 30 minutes
• Fever
• Weight loss
(Price, SA. And Wilson LM., 1993)

3. ASPECTS THAT CAN CAUSE RHEUMATIC

3.1 Aspects Can Cause Rheumatic
Rheumatoid arthritis is caused by an error in a person's immune system that attacks
the synovium or a membrane that lines the joints in the body. As a result, the synovium
becomes inflamed and causes damage to the cartilage and bone around the joint. The
tendons and ligaments around the joint become weak and stretched. By the time, the joint
will lose shape and change its position than it should. (Peter, E. L., 2000)

4. THE MEDICAL TREATMENS

4.1 The Medical Treatments
Handling of this disease is to reduce and eliminate inflammation that occurs. Even so,
rheumatoid arthritis itself cannot be completely cured. Medications that can be given to
people with rheumatoid arthritis include:
1) Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
2) Anti-inflammatory drugs steroids.
3) Vitamins and other supplements.
In addition to drugs with rheumatoid arthritis, it is advisable to undergo physiotherapy
to help restore the flexibility of the diseased joints. In severe cases, surgery is an option
for people with rheumatoid arthritis. (Halodoc, 2019).

5. THE PREVENTIONS
5.1 The Preventions
This rheumatoid arthritis disease until this time cannot be prevented, because the exact
cause of the disease itself is still unknown. However, it does not hurt to avoid risk factors
that can be avoided and lead a healthy life. (Halodoc, 2019).
6. CONCLUSIONS
6.1 Conclusions
1) Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic systemic autoimmune disease whose main
pathological process occurs in synovial fluid.
2) People with Rheumatoid Arthritis often come with real arthritis complaints and signs
of systemic inflammation. Many symptoms occur slowly such as fatigue, fever, loss
of appetite, weight loss, pain, and joint stiffness.
3) Although rheumatoid arthritis sufferers rarely cause death, but if not treated
immediately can cause symptoms of deformity / permanent disability. In addition,
because this disease is chronic and often recurs, the sufferer will experience a
decrease in work productivity due to symptoms and complaints that arise causing
impaired physical activity, psychological, and quality of life suffer.
4) The goal of treatment is to produce and maintain remissions or try to suppress the
activity of the disease wherever possible. The main goal of the therapy program is to
relieve pain and inflammation, maintain joint function and prevent and / or improve
deformity.
