CHAPTER I
THE EFFECTIVENESS OF MODERN WAY OF TEACHING IN THE
ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF 11 GHT (HUMSS) AT THE PHINMA
UNIVERSITY OF PANGASINAN
“The important thing is to never stop questioning”
-Albert Einstein
Background of the Study
Our world has evolved in many aspects like the way we lived, our
society, technology even the way of teaching in our generation. Since the
ancient times, education has been a huge part of the community. This is
the way to pass down heritage, knowledge, and etc. As the years pass by
education system started to change, the way things and thought to the
students are more different and modernize base. A lot of schools
implements the modern way of teaching using computers, internet and
application for both teachers and students, etc. Our generation
upgrades a lot in terms of teaching. Many schools don’t use “manila
paper” for visual aids anymore they just use projector instead, their
assignments and projects can be passed on google classroom, a
dictionary is just one tap away with apps like Merriam Webster, even
scientific calculators are now converted to apps, So is modern way of
teaching efficient?
2
The World Bank considers education as the primary tool for the
future developments in various communities and social settlements
across the world, and it has been dedicatedly working to improve
education-related activities since 1998. This also entails various forms of
learning funded by world governments and approved by practice. From
2011 to 2016 more than $10 million have been invested to improve
educational facilities. Another identical passage is according to Dr.
GopikumarShivaramaiah(2018) As an alternate to the lectures, there has
been a lot of modern teaching methods which prove to be more effective.
Some of the important modern teaching methods would include Problem-
Based Learning, Team-Based Learning, Small-group discussion, Flipped-
classroom projects. These are some of the advantages of modern teaching
methods:
Dr. Michael W. Kirst stated that Students are more motivated to
attend their classroom sessions and are less bored. Interactive classes
can avid forms of engagement during the learning process with the help
of augmented reality and virtual reality applications and tools. Students
are able to grasp even the most challenging concepts with ease and at a
much swifter pace. Learning can be catered towards specific child need
and thus it is highly customizable and can be personalized as well. The
learning method boosts the student’s creativity and curiosity factor
3
making them more open towards acquiring knowledge and information
that is share with them. These teaching methods are considered very
effective learning tool as the active student participation is a must. These
methods lead to long-term knowledge retention. These methods are very
effective for students don’t excel working solo .These methods develop
teamwork and interpersonal communication skills. This brought the
researchers to another conclusion and theory that what if the teachers
were having a hard time teaching the children of the modern educational
system and these might have been the results of the low statistics of
academic performance of the generation today ranging from kindergarten
to senior high school. If both are coping up are slow the solution might
be there for us to research. In conclusion of these matters modern
education has indeed been a picturesque and more resilient than the
usual.
These modern methods want the students to come well prepared
about the subject. Student unpreparedness is the biggest hindrance for
learning in these methods. Not effective for a large group of students.
Students who are academically strong may provide more input and have
a better participation than other students. Hence, it may create a
learning imbalance among the students.
Nowadays, modern and active methods have attracted the attention
of many authorities and teachers. These mainly focuses on the learner
4
and his interests and capabilities and the teacher tries to reinforce
capabilities of learners in listening, speaking, reading, writing, argument,
comparison, analysis, construction and creativity and presents the
content based on these issues (Akbari, 2010).
It is already the 21 st Century, we have crossed a threshold of
methods in teaching, and by far our century has been more advanced
and systematic, it has spread like wildfire and is irrevocable by means of
technology. It has been part of our lives, it is attached to us, it has been
considered as a necessity for learning the environment, it has helped us
to industrialize, helped us cope with unknown environments. By seeking
answers from the ambiguity of unanswered questions; we grasped
knowledge, and that really helped us.
So, this study aims to know the effectiveness of using the modern
way of teaching in academic performance of 11 GHT 8 HUMSS of
PHINMA University of Pangasinan.

RELATED LITERATURE

Technology, as a term, had greatly changed the education
landscape even the way of teaching is no longer seen as the traditional
face to face delivery of lessons. Now students can also learn outside the
classroom via Internet. Through their gadgets, students nowadays they
can experience to travel all over the world without wasting money, they
feel like they have some kind of living tutor that can teach them through
the web. – A literature review on the current technology in education
[ CITATION Mannd \l 1033 ].
Information and communication technology (ICT) can also enhance
the quality of EDUCATION in several ways, also transformational tools
when used appropriately. Also enable kids to search for information they
need and to organize what they have found. Technology spread so far
that in the past 10 years or so on, it has witnessed a pace of disruption
in education that’s unmatched in previous decades [ CITATION Mannd \l 1033 ]
Books, curriculums, and even teachers are rapidly being replaced
or complemented by online resources, web.
The special Report of Lora P. Lina (2012, revealed that the
Philippines is experiencing 75% mobile penetration. One fifth of its
12
population can also be found online. Of its population can also be found
online. That means more than 24 million Filipinos are able to log into
their Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram account regularly. Many Filipino
are active communicators in both SMS and internet.
According to Lota O. Florentino, the K to 12 curriculum has been
already implemented and part parcel of the MTB-MLE program in which
the mother tongue of the learner is used as a medium of instruction and
also taken as a subject [ CITATION Thend \l 1033 ]
According to Mike Cabigon (published 2015) in his published work
or article “State of English in the Philippines: Should We Be Concerned?”
stated that in maintaining good results of English language
implementation students, teachers are to improve their personal way of
teaching student or for short have it modernized so that students could
cope in the fast changing world[ CITATION Mik15 \l 1033 ].
In the same article a statement found saying that “Our future
teachers should ensure that English is a means of communication,
rather than a set of facts to be learned,” by Dr. Alonzo. So, the
department of education focused in making English learned holistically
and implemented early in k-12 [ CITATION Mik15 \l 1033 ].

Over the years, technology has created amazing tools and
resources, and changed many aspect of daily life. Modern technology
has paved the way for multi-functional devices like the smart watch and
the smart phone. Technology has also made our lives easier, faster and
more fun. And give us brand new devices in recent decades. With these
devices, we can do things like travelling without wasting money you just
need to use the internet platform, to order a food without going out.
Technology has changed how we entertain ourselves. Each technology is
likely to play a different role in student's learning [ CITATION rapnd \l 1033 ]
Proponents of educational technology contend that technology
accommodates individual learning rates. They also believe that the use of
technology in the classroom provides student with the opportunity to
excel - (Jobe& Peck, 2008; Bebell, 2005; Honey et al.,2005; Waddoups,
2004; Gahala, 2001; Healey, 2001).
Technology has been around for a very long time. Some school
districts have terminated technology programs following logistical and
technical problems.
14
According to a published study by Loretta Carbone Tindall (1996),
as cited by Ravith (1987), during this time students are merely guided
only by books and not by teachers in Georgia (page10 chapter II). This
kind of education back then was not controlled by the merely commercial
publishers. Children are still controlled by teachers but only in the way
of what they must read like myths, legends and fables
Educational technology is also the way to enhance students. Also
can empower teachers and learners to develop the 21 st century skills
when it comes to learning. It also motivates students to get more
involved in learning activities and become more active and more
interested in learning. Moreover, the others believe that adapting to
such technologies can also inhance their communication with students,
reduce the teaching pressure caused by the course of material
preparation and make the lecture material available at the time of the
disscussion[ CITATION Mannd1 \l 1033 ]
Shiela Allan (2012) in her article “Positive Impact of Internet on
Communication Skills”, discussed that the internet is a powerful tool
that is revolutionizing children’s learning, communication and play. If
properly used the internet can serve as a medium for acceptable social
interaction [ CITATION All12 \l 1033 ].

The Philippine education is composed of public and private schools
weather its in elementary, highschool or college. Through time , the
government of the Philippines was able to add the K-12 and change the
old curriculums into a modern education thus tis also change the way of
teaching for every teacher in the Philippines [ CITATION www19 \l 1033 ].
Amado C. Ramos (Ph. D) stated at his journal from November
3,2015 to December 29, 2015 that at Pangasinan State university in
Bayambang, Pangasinan, only 37 (32.5%) of teacher respondents has
earned their master’s degree with doctorate units and 13 (15.7%) are
bachelor’s degree holders with master’s units. Having a complete
education is still a huge factor in being a teacher to be able to give the
students the quality of education they need.
According the study “Effective Teaching Strategies in the
Philippines” [ CITATION www \l 1033 ] there are teacher guidelines to be able to
be more sociable to students a teacher will encounter. Having to know
self like professional habits, attitude, and [Link] to get
along people, strong relationship to pupils and more. So, the teachers go
through personal check of themselves or self-improvement in now’
modern way of teaching they have to suit the kid’s personality and able
to capture their attention.
16
The very crucial part in waiting research is to know where your
research comes, so it is importance to understand and analyze the
differences between the modern way of teaching and teaching using
technology. Modern way of teaching critically examined. The educational
material is the information or massage and the student is the receiver of
that information. In terms of the message via “chalk and talk”. [ CITATION
AJund \l 1033 ]
The learning mode tends to be positive and the teachers play little
part in their learning process (Orlich 1998).In such a lecture students
assume a purely passive role and their concentration fades (15-20 mins.)

According to Essays, UK. (November 2018), education is an
important pace of the social, political and economic development of any
country, so effective teaching is very essential. Effective teaching is
important because teaching is based on helping children progress from
one level to another in a more sociable interactive environment and to get
the approach right to get students to be independent learners (Muijus
and Reynolds, 2005). Furthermore this proves that modern way of
teaching is all about delivering the knowledge to kids more clear and in a
faster way possible [ CITATION UKend \l 1033 ].
Another identical similar from UKessays, effective teaching is important
because teaching is based on helping children progress from one level to
another in a more sociable interactive environment, and to get the
approach right, to get the students to be independent learners. Through

this, we can make the students more eager to learning something
[ CITATION UKend \l 1033 ]
[ CITATION Kam14 \l 1033 ]a R. C. Patel Institute of Pharmaceutical
Education & Research in maharashta (may 2014) stated his research
“Modern Approaches and Methods in Teaching English Language” that
teaching must include two major components sending and receiving
information to the students, the newer trends seem to have emerged in
the field of education that have entirely changed the face of traditional
system of education. Recent trends, methodologies and
developments portray the vital role of education sector in general
with its internalization of the education process, stress on quality
above quantity, increase in the adoption of technologies, necessity
for professional talent etc[ CITATION Kam14 \l 1033 ].
THE IMPORTANCE MODERN TEACHING
“Knowledge is power” said the antagonist Peter Baelish of the
HBO’s Game of Thrones (Game of Thrones Episode 3 Season 1-Peter
Baelish) and indeed it is. Teaching has always been the pinnacle of
progress ages ago, it has been the way to pass down knowledge, and it
always will be. Teaching had different methods as time passed by. As
19
diversity strikes, new ways of teaching blooms, from tablets, to
papyruses, to blackboards, and now recently to projectors. An effective
method of teaching can bring progress and prosperity, and a great
contribution for education.
Modern society demands high quality teaching and learning from
teachers. Teachers have to possess a great deal of knowledge and skills
with regards to both teaching and assessment practices, in order to meet
those demands and standards of quality education.
