LEED Credits for Sustainable Building Materials

Fireclay Tile's products qualify for several LEED credits due to their sustainable manufacturing practices and materials. Their tiles contain 10% pre-consumer and 40% post-consumer recycled content, qualifying for MR Credits 4.1 and 4.2. They are also manufactured within 100 miles of their California locations, qualifying for MR Credits 5.1 and 5.2. As mineral-based flooring without organic coatings or sealants, Fireclay tiles contribute to IEQ Credit 4.3 for low-emitting flooring systems.

LEED CREDIT
ELIGIBILITY
Sustainable by Design
Founder Paul Burns likes to say that he hates waste and loves efficiency. This simple mantra has become a guiding
principle in our design and business philosophy for almost 30 years. Each and every tile reflects our commitment to
finding the most innovative ways to transform cast-off materials into beautiful, high-quality product that will last for
generations. In addition, our honest manufacturing practices and materials qualify for a number of LEED credits, detailed
below. We invite you to partner with us as we continue on our mission to pave the way towards sustainable design, one
tile at a time.

LEED CREDITS
MATERIALS RESOURCE MR CREDIT 4.1 AND 4.2
Intent: To increase demand for building products that incorporate recycled content materials, thereby reducing impacts
resulting from extraction and processing of virgin materials
Requirements:
• Use materials with recycled content such that the sum of post-consumer recycled content plus ½ of the pre-
consumer content constitutes at least 10% or 20%, based on cost of the total value of the materials in the project.
• The minimum percentage materials recycled for each point threshold is as follows:
Recycled Content
-- 10% - 1 point
-- 20% - 2 points
The recycled content value of a material assembly is determined by weight. The recycled fraction of the assembly is
then multiplied by the cost of assembly to determine the recycled content.

Product Contribution:
• Recycled Tile: 10% by weight pre-consumer recycled content and 40% by weight post-consumer content.
• Glazed Thin Brick: 0% by weight pre-consumer recycled content and 100% by weight post-consumer recycled
content
• Credit Calculations: Please refer to appropriate LEED rating system requirement for specific project.

REGIONAL MANUFACTURING MR CREDIT 5.1 AND 5.2

Intent: To increase demand for building materials that are extracted and manufactured within the region, thereby
supporting the use of indigenous resources and reducing the environmental impacts resulting from transportation.
Requirements:
• Use building materials or products that have been extracted, harvested or recovered, as well as manufactured within
100 miles of the project site for a minimum of 10% or 20% based on cost of the total materials value. If only a fraction
of a product or material is extracted, harvested, or recovered and manufactured locally, then only that percentage (by
weight) can contribute to the regional value.
• The minimum percentage materials recycled for each point threshold is as follows:
Regional Materials
-- 10% - 1 point
-- 20% - 2 points

(REGIONAL MANUFACTURING MR CREDIT 5.1 AND 5.2, continued)

Product Contribution:
• Recycled Tile: Manufactured in Aromas, California, 95004
• Glazed Thin Brick: Manufactured in San Rafael, California 94901 and glazed and fired in Aromas California, 95004

ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY IEQ CREDIT 4.3: LOW-EMITTING FLOORING SYSTEMS

Intent: To reduce the quantity of indoor air contaminants that is odorous, irritating and/or harmful to the comfort and
well-being of installers and occupants
Requirements:
• For Option 1: Fourth bulleted item updated April 14, 2010 per UsGBC addendum: “Mineral-based finish flooring
products such as tile, masonry, terrazzo, and cut stone without integral organic-based coatings and sealants and
unfinished/untreated solid wood flooring qualify for credit without any IAQ testing requirements.”
Product Contributions:
• Fireclay products are all VOC-free because they are fired at temperatures of 2,014 °F. This heating process eliminates
any possible VOCs in the final product thereby leaving the tile inert.
