Fluid Mechanics II Exam - SHM College

This document contains an exam for a fluid mechanics course taken by a student. The exam has two modules, each with 4 questions worth 5 marks each. Module 1 covers different classifications of flows in channels and formulas for discharge in open channels. Module 2 covers topics like hydraulic jumps, specific energy and specific energy curves, critical depth and velocity, tranquil and torrential flows, and calculating specific energy and critical parameters for given channel flows. The document provides the student's name, roll number, college and university details, date of exam, duration and total marks.

S. H. M. ENGINEERING COLLEGE, KADAKKAL

(APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University)
FOURTH SEMESTER, SECOND SERIES EXAMINATION, Mar 2018

CE 206: FLUID MECHANICS II

Duration: 2 Hrs Total Marks: 40

MODULE 3
(Answer any 4 questions. Each carries 5 marks)

1. Explain different classification of flows in channels.

2. Obtain discharge through an open channel by Chezy’s formula.
3. Find the bed slope of a trapezoidal channel of bed of width 4m, depth of water 3m and
side slope of 2 horizontal to 3 vertical, when discharge through the channel is 20m 3/s.
Take Manning’s N = 0.03 on Manning’s formula.
4. Find the condition for most economical trapezoidal channel.
5. A rectangular channel 3m wide has a depth of water 1.5m. The slope of the bed of the
channel is 1 in 1000 and value of Chezy’s constant C = 55. It is desired to increase the
discharge to a maximum by changing the dimensions of the sections for constant area
of cross section, slope of the bed and roughness of the channel. Find the new
dimensions of the channel and increase in discharge.

MODULE 4
(Answer any 4 questions. Each carries 5 marks)

6. What is hydraulic jump? Derive expression for depth of hydraulic jump.

7. Explain specific energy and Specific energy curve with the help of a neat figure.
8. Explain Critical depth, Critical Velocity and Critical flow.
9. Explain tranquil flow and torrential flow. Derive the expression for condition for
maximum dischargers for a given value of specific energy.
10. The discharge of water through a rectangular channel of width 8m, is 15m 3/s when
depth of flow of water is 1.2m. Calculate;
a. Specific energy of the flowing water.
b. Critical Depth and Critical Velocity.
c. Value of minimum specific energy.
