Unit 4 Project: Real life word Problems
Word Problem: Megan has a target gift card worth $80. She wants to buy several
movies that cost $12 each plus an $8 video game. Write and solve an inequality that
represents the number of movies she can buy without overspending.
Inequality: 12x +8 ≤ 80
Value of Variable: 6 ≤ x
12x +8 ≤ 80
12x ≤ 80 – 8
12x ≤ 72
12x/12 ≤ 72/12
x≤6

Inequality Table:
Sentences: The value 4 makes the inequality true because 4 is less than 6.
Additionally, when you plug 4 in for x, you get that 56 is less than or equal to 80.
Therefore, you can buy 4 movies and have $24 left over. The value 7 makes the
inequality false because 7 is not less than 6. Additionally, when you plug 7 in for x,
you get that 92 is less than or equal to 80. This statement is not true, therefore
the inequality is false for the value 7. The value 4 makes the inequality true
because 4 is less than 6. Additionally, when you plug 2 in for x, you get that 36 is
less than or equal to 80. Therefore, you can buy 2 movies and have $44 left over.
Vocabulary:
Inequality- a mathematical sentence that compares expressions. It contains the
symbols, <, >, ≤, ≥.
Less than or equal- Values that are equal to the inequality or smaller than the
inequality
Solution- a value that makes the inequality true.
Solution set- The set of all solutions of an inequality
Graph of an inequality- shows all the solutions of the inequality on a number line.
Closed circle- Used when a number is a solution
