Poisonous Plants
Pony Club D Test – Basic Needs of Pony

Poisonous Plants
There are lots of plants that are poisonous to ponies. Ponies usually will not eat them unless they
are very hungry, but we should always be very careful to prevent that from happening.
Poisonous plants should be removed immediately and ideally burnt. Some can be controlled with
weedkillers, but care must be taken not to graze ponies on treated land again until it is safe to do
so.
Some trees leaves and fruit are also poisonous. Ponies should not be grazed near these trees when
they are dropping their leaves or fruit. Seedlings from certain trees (such as sycamore) are also very
poisonous and should be removed as soon as they are seen.

These are the main poisonous plants you should be able to recognise

RAGWORT FOXGLOVE

ACORN

DEADLY
NIGHTSHADE

HEMLOCK
