How to Tie a Tie: The Proper Way

Time it will take: This process can take anywhere from 17 seconds to a full minuet or longer
depending on your skill level and how many tries it takes to get it right.
Materials: It is preferred to have a collared button-down shirt. However, all you need is a Tie. No
clip-ons or zip-ons allowed!!
Note these pictures are reversed left and right.
1. Flip up collar.
2. Put the tie around your neck. The fat end needs to be on the right with the skinny end on
the left. Important note: Fat end must be longer than skinny end (this is dependent on
your height)

This side should be shortened or lengthened

depending on final outcome.

3. Bring the fat end over the skinny end and pinch in the middle.
4. Now bring the fat end around and behind the skinny end.

5. Bring the fat end of the tie through the loop beneath the
collar.

6. Now take the fat end and bring it through the same loop once more. It will be forced to wrap
itself around the left end of the loop this is correct.
7. Bring the fat end over the knot you now have.
8. Bring the fat and behind and back up through the loop so it lays over the top.

9. If done correctly there should now be a loop that is behind the fat end and in front of the knot.
Bring the fat end through this loop.

Bring fat end behind this

flap.

Should look like this when

done with step 9.

10. To tighten knot, grab the knot with one hand and pull the fat end with the other.
11. Synching up the tie is the easiest step. Grab the knot with your right hand and with your left
hand pull on the skinny end.

12. Fold collar back over and you might be done.

13. If tie is too short meaning above the belt, untie, lengthen the fat end side from the start and
redo steps 1-11

Note how the tip of the tie is above the belt

line. This is incorrect, looks unprofessional and
should be retied.

14. If tie is too long meaning below the belt untie, shorten the fat
end side from the start and redo steps 1-11.

Note how the tip of the tie is below the belt

line. This is incorrect, looks unprofessional and
should be retied.
15. If tip of the tie comes to the belt line. Congratulations you are done. Skip steps 13 and 14.

Note how the tip of the tie is at the belt line.

This is the proper professional look.

 However, if tie looks like image below look at step 16.

This tie is almost perfectly tied. However, the

skinny end is below the fat end.

16. Grab the skinny end of the tie and tuck it between the buttons of your shirt.

17. After tie is tied and skinny end is not below fat end grab the skinny end and slip it in the loop
that is behind the fat end. If tie does not have loop disregard this step.
18. Fold collar back over.
19. If collar has buttons button collar.
20. With the help of a friend or mirror make sure the tie isn’t sticking out in the back under your
collar. If so, dress it until it is no longer seen.

Congratulations you have tied a tie the Proper Way!!
