1. Define integrated curriculum.
An integrated curriculum is described as one that connects different areas of
study by cutting across subject-matter lines and emphasizing unifying concepts.
Integration focuses on making connections for students, allowing them to
engage in relevant, meaningful activities that can be connected to real life.
Integrated curriculum is a way of teaching a way of planning and organizing the
instructional program. This enables the discrete disciplines of subject matter
related to one another design that matches the developmental needs of the
learners to connect to their learning's in ways that are meaningful to their current
and past experiences. This is an antithesis of the traditional, disparate, subject-
matter oriented teaching and curriculum designation.
2. What are the different levels in the integration of the curriculum?
Level 1
The traditional organization of curriculum and classroom instruction , where teachers plan
and arrange the subject –specific scope and sequence in the format of topic outline.
Level 2
Themes for one disciplines are not necessarily planned and coordinated to correspond to
ot integrate with themes of another or to be taught simultaneously .
Level 3
This type of integration occurs when the same students are learning two or more of their
core subjects around a common theme from one or more teachers.
Level 4
Teachers and students collaborate on a common theme and it’s content, and discipline
boundaries begin to disappear as teachers teach about this common theme.
Level 5
Teacher and their students have collaborated on a common theme and its content;
discipline boundaries are blurred as teachers of several grade levels and or of various
subjects teach on various aspects of the common theme.
3. Give at least three theories that support the integration of
curriculum with brief description.
Experiential Learning. Carl Roger (2004), the proponent of this theory, believe
that all individual have a natural propensity to learn. John Dewey (1938), posits
that school learning should be experiential because students learn from what
they experience.
Constructivism learning theory is the role which experiences-or connections
with the adjoining atmosphere-play in student education. The constructivism
learning theory argues that people produce knowledge and form meaning
based upon their experiences.
Multiple Intelligences. Howard Gardner, affirms that there are more kind of
intelligence that what we thought before. The nine categories of intelligences
presented by Gardner and Associates
Linguistic intelligence
Logical-Mathematical Intelligence
Spatial Intelligence
Bodily-kinesthetic Intelligence
Musical Intelligence
Interpersonal Intelligence
Intrapersonal Intelligence
Naturalistic Intelligence
Existentialist Intelligence.
4. What are the principles in integrating ideas and strategies?
Principles in Integrating Big Ideas and Strategies To ensure effective instruction
Integrate several ideas and strategies
Match content with strategies
Integrate relevant concepts
Integrate big ideas across multiple contents of instructions
Provide opportunities to establish connections.
5. What are the common elements of an integrated curriculum?
Common Elements of an Integrated Curriculum Listed below are the common
elements of an Integrated Curriculum as expounded by Lake (2000)
A combination of subjects or learning areas
An emphasis on projects
Relationships among concepts
Thematic units as organizing principles
Sources that go beyond textbooks
Flexible schedules
Flexible student grouping
6. What are the steps in planning an integrated instruction ?
Planning Integrated Instruction
Draw content of instruction in basic education from the learning
competencies
Identify a theme drawn from a core discipline
Identify the related disciplines or learning areas that can help unfold the
chosen theme into instruction
Collaborate with the teachers teaching the identified learning area
addressing the chosen theme.
Look for appropriate reading materials.
Use an approach to instruction that will facilitate integrative teaching-
learning in the classroom.
WORK SAMPLES:
1. Make a collage showing the importance of curriculum in the
education process.
2. Formulate your own caption on the importance of curriculum in
the teaching and learning process.
“The curriculum that we’ve chosen will determine the shape of our career
and prepare us with the knowldege to be a successful, and responsible
citizen.”
3. Write a letter of concern addressed to DEPED or CHED with
regards to your concern about our present curriculum.

Dear DepEd and CHED,
We are writing to express our concern about the impact of the current curriculum
to the people of the Philippines. The said K-12 surprised the whole country for it was not
yet ready for the change. The lack of buildings, the familiarization of teachers on the
new lessons, and the lack of information regarding the upcoming changes in the way of
teaching the children caused the chaos and rants of the parents for they were not
informed of all the advantages of K-12.
The government should have planned ahead of time and prepared the facilities
and equipments needed before they have launched the said curriculum and slowly
informed the people of what advantages this would give compared to the old curriculum.
We are aware that the whole world follow this standard but it would have been smooth if
it wasn’t implemented in haste.
There is nothing we can do in the past. So, let us focus in the present and future
of our education system. We are suggesting some improvements especially on the
information about what really happens after the Senior High School stage of a student.
We have noticed some of the parents are really mad of this system mainly because they
believe that their children would take too long to finish their education. Please provide
more information about this so that we are clarified on what’s the real goal of this new
curriculum.
We are expecting your response on your most convenient time.
Sincerely,
Resel Calusin
Answer the following questions briefly:
1. Why is MAKABAYAN subject a good avenue for integration in various
disciplines?
Makabayan, meaning love for the country, asks students to develop a healthy
personal and national self-identity that has been the aim of Philippines Values
education. Philippine Values education seems to succeed in combining the
development of personality and nationality identity. Integration of various
disciplines such as Araling Panlipunan, Home Economics, Physical Education,
Health, Music, and Arts. Makabayan is the integrated learning subject composed
of Philippine history and politicaleconomic system, local cultures, crafts, arts,
music and games. ... Makabayan, meaning love for the country, asks students to
develop a healthy personal and national self-identity that has been the aim of
Philippines Values education.
2. What are some modes of integrative teaching?
Content Based Instruction (CBI). This refers to the integration of content
learning with language teaching aims. It refers to the concurrent study of
language and subject matter with the form and sequence of language
presentation dictated by the content materials
Focusing Inquiry. Inquiry teaching is an interdisciplinary approach that
uses questions to organize learning.
Generic Competency Model. In this models, the learners are enrolled in
three to four linked courses. The links between the courses rest
essentially on “general competencies”.
Thematic Teaching. Thematic themes organize learning around ideas. It
provide a broad framework for linking content and process from a number
of disciplines.
3. Define instructional objectives.
Instructional Objectives- are statements that describe what
learners shall be able to do upon completion of a given learning
experience. These are the objectives formulated by teachers for
a particular lesson or unit of study that drive the performance of
learners. Essentially, instructional objectives are the actual
behaviors that the learners are expected to accomplish.
4. What are the classification of instructional objectives and give
specific example for every classification?
Cognitive Domain- This refers to the intellectual operation
from the lowest level of simple recall of information to
complex, high-level thinking process. The six levels of
cognitive objectives in Bloom’s taxonomy include
knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis,
synthesis, and evaluation.
Affective Domain- The affective domain hierarchy includes from the least
internalized to the most internalized like receiving, responding, valuing,
organizing, and internalizing (Krathwohl, Bloom, and marsh, 1984).example
Psychomotor Domain- The hierarchy in the psychomotor domain ranges from
simple gross locomotor control to the most creative and inventive
[Link] naming, manipulating, communicating, and creating. Example
walking or grasping.
5. How do you prepare instructional objectives?
.Topics These are the subjects drawn from a textbook or curriculum guide
Goals and Objectives. These are the lists of learning intentions in broad and
specific terms.
Content outline. This is an outline of the materials to be covered
Learning Activities. These include teacher and student activities comprising
introductory, developmental, and culminating activities.
Resources and Materials. These include the list of materials to be selected and
prepared for the unit.
Evaluation. This includes an outline of evaluation procedures.
6. Define the following terms:
a. Organizing bodies of knowledge
Organizing bodies of the knowledge drawn from multiple disciplines is the key to
effective instruction. These are topics that combine facts, concepts,
generalizations, and the relationships among them. In planning thematic units,
the content of instruction could be presented this way.
b. Teaching approaches
Teaching Approaches Integrative teaching and learning requires particular
teaching models for its effectively. These teaching models are larger than a
particular strategy, method, or tactic and are supported by theories of
instruction. Teaching Strategies are the means techniques, or procedures used
in presenting data collected reflecting interactive aspects of teaching.
c. Graphic organizers
- Graphic Organizers are also called learning organizers. Teachers use them when
presenting the scope of the lesson, in giving the lectures, and during closure.
Students use them in presenting an individual or group report and even in
formulating generalizations.
d. Study skills
- Study Skills, which are important in planning instruction, are teachable. By and
large, study skills are competencies associated with acquiring, recording, organizing,
synthesizing, remembering, and using information and ideas found in schools
(Divine, 1981).
e. Integrating value
- Values are integrated today in all learning areas in the elementary and
secondary schools. Values are the standards or criteria that we use in making judgments about
whether something is positive or negative, good or bad, pleasing or displeasing.
F. Assessment and evaluation
- Assessment is the ongoing process of gathering and analyzing evidence of what students
know and what they do not know. (Burke, 1993)
- Evaluation is the process of interpreting the evidence and making judgments and decisions
based on the evidence. It is the process of making judgment about the quality of performance
QUIZ:
1. Choose two (2) teaching strategies and explain the steps and explain
why you have chosen these strategies.
The Experiential Learning Cycle follows five steps:
The Experience itself. This can be a scheduled activity, current event, or
an unexpected discussion
Publishing. Participants reflect on their personal journey through that
experience
Processing
Generalizing
Applying.
Experiential learning is designed to engage students' emotions as well as enhancing their
knowledge and skills. Playing an active role in the learning process can lead to students
experiencing greater gratification in learning. I choose these strategies because in experiential
learning works very well inside the classroom. It enables faculty members to pose problems,
observe how students go about solving them, facilitate learning, observe learning as it occurs,
and help students make meaning of their experiences.
Inquiry-Based instruction
Interacting
Big Idea: Dive into engaging, relevant, and credible media forms to
identify a ‘need’ or opportunity for inquiry.
Clarifying
Big Idea: Summarizing, paraphrasing, and categorizing
learning with teacher or expert support.
Questioning
Big Idea: Asking questions to drive continued, self-
directed inquiry
Designing
Big Idea: Designing an accessible, relevant, and
curiosity-driven action or product to culminate
and justify inquiry
Inquiry-based learning allows students to take an active role in their studies at a high
level and teaches useful skills for their long-term goals. Further, it shifts the focus from
the teacher's words and lectures into a strategy that triggers student curiosity, and this
is crucial to the goal of meaningful learning. The students build critical thinking and
communication skills. ... By allowing students to explore topics, make their own
connections, and ask questions, they are able to learn more effectively.
2. Why is values integration necessary in every lesson?
Values integration necessary in every lesson because it gives a lot advantages
on the part of the student who are the main focus of teaching process. The
student may gain variety of great benefits. The students’ learning are more
profound. It becomes more meaningful, relevant and interactive. The students
are more engage in learning the subject matter. It also strengthens academic
education and it develops values of every student. Furthermore, it exhibits
potential to reinforce students’ acquisition of basic and higher order facts and
concepts as well as values. Values Integration is about teaching students how to
use their knowledge for the betterment of themselves and society. Students are
taught that good conduct; behaviour and self-development are all acts of
worship. To strive and achieve ones full potential is seen as a duty.
3. Explain the importance of assessment in the teaching and learning process?
Assessment is a key component of learning because it helps students learn.
When students are able to see how they are doing in a class, they are able to
determine whether or not they understand course material. Assessment can also
help motivate students. Just as assessment helps students, assessment helps
teacher.
