Understanding Blanking in Metalworking

This document discusses the mechanical engineering process of blanking. Blanking is a shearing operation where a geometrical shape is cut from a sheet metal by applying shear stresses that exceed the sheet's ultimate shear strength along the shape's periphery. The quality of blanks depends highly on the radial clearance percentage between the punch and die. The main parameters that affect blanking are the radial clearance percentage, punch and die profile radii, blanking speed, temperature, sheet hardness, and punch and die shapes. The document aims to discuss the important aspects of blanking operations and classify press working operations.

Definition:
Blanking is a forming process by a certain geometrical
shape is sheared off a sheet metal by subjecting the sheet to
shear stresses exceeding the ultimate shear strength of the
sheet along the periphery of the required geometrical shape.

Quality of Blanks:

The quality of blank is highly dependent (c/t)% ,the

radial clearance percentage in the blank .

Press working operations:

Press working is one of the most advanced and
extensively used methods of metal
working. Press working operations can be classified into:
a) Shearing operations:
Where a part is completely sheared off the work piece
and normally deformation carried out to fracture in these
operations.

b) Forming operations:
Where the part is formed from one shape to another
while its volume remains constant .

Shearing operations:
These include shearing, blanking, piercing, notching,
slitting, trimming and cutting off.

Main Parameters Affecting Blanking:

The following are the main parameters affecting the
blanking process:
a) Radial clearance percentage (c/t)%:
Defined as the ratio between the radial clearance
between punch and die, where
C= (Dd-Dp)/2
Dd: is the die diameter
Dp: is the punch diameter
b) Punch and die profile radius:

c) Blanking Speed:
Increasing the speed will improve the quality of the
blank it will reduces the amount of dishing, doming and
edge taper.

d) Temperature:
Increasing the working temperature will decrease the
maximum blanking force and the blanking energy.
Furthermore, decreasing the working temperature will
improve the quality of the blank.
e) Sheet or work piece hardness:
As hardness of sheet increase the amount of dishing
,doming and edge taper decrease.

f ) Punch and die shapes:

Usually the surface of the punch and die are flat .Thus
the punch force builds up rapidly during shearing because
the entire thickness is sheared at the same time .The
shearing area can be controlled by beveling the punch and
die surfaces.
Blanks Layout:
The layout of the blanks in blanking is of almost
importance from the cost standpoint .In addition, layout is a
good place to start when designing a die. The grain
direction generally runs lengthwise of the strip for rolled or
sheet stock .If the grain direction must run perpendicular to
the length of the strip it can be ordered sheared from sheet
stock in the direction .Wide run layouts are more
economical than narrow run layouts ,and side by side
layouts will also save materials and handling time.

Discussion:

The main goal of this experiment is to discuss the

important point of the blanking operation and the press
working operation.
However, we classify the press working operation into
shearing operation and forming operation .In addition, we
took some definitions about blanking and the quality of
blanking. Moreover, We discuss the mechanism of
deformation of blanking .Also, we offer the main
parameters that affects blanking which are radial clearance
percentage , blanking speed, temperature, sheet or work
piece hardness and punch shape.
