Volumetric Efficiency of Compressors

The document is an HVAC lab manual from Wah Engineering College. It provides background on compressors and the basic refrigeration cycle. It then discusses volumetric efficiency, which is the ratio of the actual volume of refrigerant entering the compressor compared to the swept volume of the cylinder. The lab experiment uses a refrigeration test bench to determine the volumetric efficiency of a compressor by varying the refrigerant flow rate and rpm and measuring the refrigerant pressure and total displacement. Students are instructed to take observations, perform calculations, and draw a conclusion.

Lab Experiment # 04

Objective:
To determine the volumetric efficiency of a compressor with the help of Refrigeration Test Bench OSK-
4568.

Apparatus:
Refrigeration Test Bench OSK-4568

Introduction:
Compressor:
An air compressor is a device that converts power (using an electric motor, diesel or gasoline engine, etc.)
into potential energy stored in pressurized air (i.e., compressed air).
As gases are compressible, the compressor also reduces the volume of a gas. Liquids are relatively
incompressible; while some can be compressed, the main action of a pump is to pressurize and transport
liquids.
Basic Refrigeration Cycle:

Principles Of Refrigeration:
For an air conditioning system to operate with economy, the refrigerant must be used repeatedly. For
this reason, all air conditioners use the same cycle of compression, condensation, expansion, and
evaporation in a closed circuit. The same refrigerant is used to move the heat from one area, to cool
this area, and to expel this heat in another area.

 Liquids absorb heat when changed from liquid to gas

 Gases give off heat when changed from gas to liquid.

 The refrigerant comes into the compressor as a low-pressure gas, it is compressed and then
moves out of the compressor as a high-pressure gas.

 The gas then flows to the condenser. Here the gas condenses to a liquid, and gives off its heat
to the outside air.

 The liquid then moves to the expansion valve under high pressure. This valve restricts the
flow of the fluid, and lowers its pressure as it leaves the expansion valve.

 The low-pressure liquid then moves to the evaporator, where heat from the inside air is
absorbed and changes it from a liquid to a gas.

 As a hot low-pressure gas, the refrigerant moves to the compressor where the entire cycle is
repeated.

 Volumetric Efficiency:
Volumetric efficiency is the ratio of the amount of refrigerant gas entering the compressor (suction)
versus the amount of gas leaving the compressor (discharge).
Volume of actual refrigerant

It is the ratio of Induced Volume to the Swept Volume.
Induced Volume

Swept volume
Where;

vr = Specific volume of refrigerant

vs= Total Cylinder Displacement
n= RPM of compressor
f= Flow rate of refrigerant

Procedure:
1. Power on the refrigeration test bench
2. The refrigerant R-12 starts to flow. Flow rate of the refrigerant is maintained uniform by
rotameter, adjust the flow rate as per requirement.
3. On the water supply with the help of the valve and adjust the flow rate in Lr /h.
4. Note down the refrigerant pressure before entering the compressor with the help of the
rotameter.
5. Also check the rpm of the compressor and fill the table.

Observations and Calculations:
