1 INTRODUCTION
This guide describes the steps necessary to connect and configure the AEM communication to a Perle IOLAN
device. This device provides basic digital alarm monitoring of non-native devices within AEM 3.
The procedure includes the following:
• Connecting to the IOLAN device.
• Configuring the IOLAN device for communicating with the AEM 3.X.
NOTE: All configuration updates are downloaded together at the END of the procedure and the device rebooted.
2 CONNECTING TO THE IOLAN DEVICE
To connect to the IOLAN device
1. Install the Perle Device Manager on your computer and run the application.
2. Click the Connect to I/O LAN button. This will scan for available devices on the network. Select the
appropriate device and click OK.

3. When prompted, enter the administration password (by default, this is ‘superuser’)
Information on the connected device will be displayed.
4. We highly recommend that the admin password is changed at the earliest opportunity.
To change the admin password:
• Navigate to Configuration, select Users, and highlight admin.
• Click Edit and enter the new password

3 CONFIGURING FOR AEM COMMUNICATION
Several steps are required in order for communication to be correctly configured on the unit, and Alarm &
Heartbeat functionality defined correctly for AEM.
3.1 Required Configuration Parameters
The following configuration parameter definitions are required

3.2 Enabling Services
To enable the services
1. In the navigation pane, select Configuration, choose Security, and Services.
2. Enable SNMP, DeviceManager and WebManager (if required) are enabled. The remaining services
are optional.

3.3 Name and IP Information
It is necessary to configure the SNMP Agent to listen for request from AEM. This will allow the installation
and resynchronisation processes to function as required.
To configure the SNAMP agent for listening to AEM requests
1. In the navigation pane, choose Configuration, and select Network, followed by IP Settings.
2. Under the IPv4 Settings tab, ensure the IP Address is configured as desired (either Static or
Dynamic).
NOTE: The information stored under System Name will be presented to AEM as the Serial Number. By default this
will be “IOLAN-[SerialNo]” where [SerialNo] is the serial Number of the unit.

3.4 UDP (Heartbeat) Messaging
To configure the UDP messaging
1. In the navigation pane, select Configuration, choose I/O Interfaces, and Settings.
2. Select the UDP tab and verify the following:
• Enable UDP Broadcast of I/O Status = enabled
• Broadcast Interval = 600 sec (10 minutes)

• Enter the AEM Address in both the Start IP Address and End IP address fields.
• Set the Port to 50500.

3.5 I/O Channels
To configure the required I/O Channels
1. In the navigation pane, select Configuration, choose I/O Interfaces, and Channels.
2. Enable ONLY the Digital Inputs as required (you may select one or both).
NOTE: Verify the Relay outputs are DISABLED.

3. For each of the required Digital Inputs, select the entry in the list and click Edit.
4. Define as follows and click OK to save and close.

Description The alarm name displayed in the AEM.
Mode Select Input Mode.
Latch Set as None
Invert Signal Check or clear depending on the logic of the provided input.
Trigger Set as Active Input. This raise an SNMP alarm when the alarm becomes active.
Clear Mode Set to Auto Clear Mode.
Send Alarms Set to SNMP.

3.6 SNMP Management
To configure the SNMP Agent
1. In the navigation pane, select Configuration, choose System, Management, and SNMP.
2. Select the SNMP tab and configure the following parameters:
Contact Contact : Name of the person responsible for the management of the unit
Information Location : Location of the person responsible for the management of the unit
Communities SNMP details required for querying the Agent.
Since the Internet Address is for clients allowed to request information from the
Agent, set it to 0.0.0.0 so as not to limit access.
3. Select the Traps tab. Enable the first destination and enter the details for AEM.
The trap may be either Trap’ or Inform. Inform is recommended as it provides retry options for
successful alarm delivery.

3.7 Download and Reboot
This procedure downloads all the configuration changes to the unit and reboot the unit.
To download and reboot
1. Click the Download All Changes button at the bottom of the window.
2. Once complete, click the Reboot IOLAN button to restart the unit. The connection will now be
dropped and the dialog will close.
3. Wait approximately two Minutes and AGAIN, click the Connect to IOLAN button. Once rebooted, the
device will again appear in the list.

4 INSTALLING INTO AEM 3.X
To install into the AEM 3.x
Once the equipment is correctly configured, after the first heartbeat is triggered, it will appear in Element
Explorer under Awaiting Authorisation.
Respond by clicking on the entry and selecting Yes.
Once the installation has been processed, the equipment will appear under the ‘Default’ group.
