ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT

2016
1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Overview
The Master of Engineering in Engineering Management program at the Arab
Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT) is designed to
accommodate graduate students with different engineering backgrounds. In addition,
it is an extremely attractive program to working engineering professionals in the
different engineering disciplines who are seeking to advance to positions of greater
managerial and technical responsibility. The program is based on an integrated
approach to the management of product, service, and process and provides the
opportunity to develop expertise in these areas.

1.2 Program Objectives

Addressing the needs of engineers moving into management positions, the Master of
Engineering in Engineering Management (MEEM) aims at:

Complementing the technical backgrounds of engineers with the human aspects,

organizational and financial issues, project considerations, resource allocation, and
extended analytical tools required for effective decision making and program
management.

The MEEM program at the AASTMT specific objectives are:

 To provide the body of knowledge needed by different professional institutes

leading to internationally recognized certificates.
 To offer the analytical, organizational, and managerial skills to bridge the gap
between a technical specialty and technical management.
 To develop effective decision making skills using hands-on experience
through real life case studies and standard problems in engineering
management.

1.3 The Need for Engineering Management Education

The emerging discipline of Engineering Management has experienced an explosive
growth pattern during the past few decades. The reasons for this pattern can be
identified at three levels.

1.3.1 The Individual Level

Engineers who move to management positions as a result of their technical success

have become aware that their technical skills are not adequate in dealing with the
complexities of their management responsibilities. A large portion of engineers
assume some form of management role during their professional career performing
management duties ranging from the indirect supervision of a small staff to the
management of entire engineering organizations.

Although prepared for technical responsibilities, engineers have received little or no

formal training for decisions beyond their specialties above those they had acquired
as engineering specialists. These new capabilities are necessary to prepare them for
decision-making roles in broad areas while maintaining identity in their technical
2
background. It has become clear that success as an engineer is a necessary but
insufficient condition to manage technical people, technical projects, technical
organizations, technical resources and technical systems.

1.3.2 The Industry Level

The critical importance of engineering skill and knowledge is well recognized in the
management of engineering systems. Engineers exhibit different levels of
engineering management skills throughout their career development from first line
management to top level management. All industry sectors require engineering
management to plan and organize resources, and direct and control technical
activities. Furthermore, the increased share of service industry calls for developing
engineering managers having managerial skills with technical background

1.3.3 The National Level

The scarcity of raw materials, declining productivity and increased competition have
imposed challenges to technological leadership and shifted priorities toward the
development of new technologies and the management of these systems.

The emerging trend for export oriented industry encouraged by the government and
thus increases in global competition which requires higher level of resource
management; turn-key projects, which are very common in developing countries and
which mainly, require management skills more than technical skills.

In response to engineers’ need for a technically oriented management education, a

number of universities are now offering Engineering Management Programs
designed for engineers and scientists who are moving toward technical management
positions, but not away from their technical backgrounds. These programs prepare
engineers for much broader responsibilities in the technological system. The strong
growth pattern observed in the Engineering Management Programs during the past
decade is still continuing. Engineers now have an opportunity to prepare themselves
for a smooth transition from technical specialties to leaders in technical management.

1.4 Program Admission Requirements

To join the program of Master of Engineering in Engineering Management, the
following minimum prerequisites are required:

 A Bachelor's degree (or higher) in an engineering area from an accredited

university or college.
 An overall Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 2.40/4.00 (or Good) in the
undergraduate degree is required. Otherwise, the applicant may be accepted
if (s)he holds a post-Bachelor's Diploma in a relevant area with a minimum
GPA of 3.00/4.00 (or Very Good).
 Pre-Master's Courses: Four Pre-Master are required to be covered before
joining the core of the Master’s Program if applicant Bachelor’s degree is in
an engineering area other than Industrial Engineering (or equivalent
programs).

3
1.5 Graduation Requirements
The candidate needs to accomplish up to 12 credit hours as pre-master courses and
33 credit hours of Master courses to achieve the MEng. degree.

The 33 hours are organized as follows:

 Up to 4 non-credit pre-master courses depending on the applicant’s

background and recommendation of the program academic adviser.
 9 credit hours core courses from Master of Science list.
 9 credit hours elective courses (to be chosen from the Master of Science
List)
 9 credit hours elective courses (to be chosen from the Master of Engineering
List)
 6 credit hours case study application.

It should be noted that the pre-master courses and Master of Science courses
are approved by the Supreme Council of Universities (SCU) in Egypt according
to decree number 105 dated April 22, 2014.
