Electrochemical Cell Reactions and Analysis

(1) The electrochemical cell consists of Fe2+/Fe and Fe3+/Fe half-cells connected. Its cell diagram is Fe(s)/Fe2+(aq) | Fe3+(aq)/Fe(s) with a standard potential of +0.40 V and spontaneous reaction of 3Fe + 2Fe3+ → 3Fe2+ + 2Fe. (2) Potassium manganate cannot be used to estimate iron(II) ions because its reduction potential oxidizes chloride ions. (3) In the mixed solution, MnO4- is reduced by Cr3+ and Cr3+ is oxidized by MnO4- . The overall reaction is 6MnO4

Exercise 8.

Use the standard potentials in the list below, as appropriate, to answer the questions
that follow.

Cl2(g) + 2e ⇌ 2Cl(aq) +1.36

Cr2O72-(aq) + 14H+(aq) + 6e ⇌ 2Cr3+(aq) + 7H2O(l) +1.33
Fe2+(aq) + 2e ⇌ Fe(s) -0.44
Fe (aq) + e ⇌ Fe (aq)
3+ 2+ +0.78
Fe3+(aq) + 3e ⇌ Fe(s) -0.04
MnO4-(aq) + 8H+(aq) + 5e ⇌ Mn2+(aq) + 4H2O(l) +1.51

(a) The two half-cells above which involve metallic iron are joined to produce an
electrochemical cell.
(i) Using standard notation, gives the conventional representation (cell diagram)
for this cell,
(ii) Calculate its standard potential, and
(iii) Write an equation for the spontaneous reaction that occurs.

(b) Potassium manganate(VII) and potassium dichromate(VI) are both strong

oxidizing agents.
(i) Which of the two is not used for the quantitative estimation of iron(II) ions in
a solution of iron(II) chloride?
(ii) Use data from the table to justify your answer.

(c) Equimolar solutions of acidified potassium manganate(VII), manganese(II)

sulphate, potassium dichromate(VI) and chromium(III) sulphate are mixed and
allowed to come to equilibrium.
(i) State which ion is oxidized and which is reduced.
(ii) Use half-equations to construct the equation for the overall reaction that
occurs.
Use the standard potentials in the list below, as appropriate, to answer the questions
that follow.

Cl2(g) + 2e ⇌ 2Cl- (aq) +1.36

Cr2O7 (aq) + 14H (aq) + 6e ⇌ 2Cr (aq) + 7H2O(l)
2- + 3+ +1.33
Fe2+(aq) + 2e ⇌ Fe(s) -0.44
Fe3+(aq) + e ⇌ Fe2+(aq) +0.78
Fe (aq) + 3e ⇌ Fe(s)
3+ -0.04
MnO4-(aq) + 8H+(aq) + 5e ⇌ Mn2+(aq) + 4H2O(l) +1.51

(d) The two half-cells above which involve metallic iron are joined to produce an
electrochemical cell.
(i) Using standard notation, gives the conventional representation (cell diagram)
for this cell,
Based on half-cells
Fe2+(aq) + 2e ⇌ Fe(s) E = -0.44 V
Fe3+(aq) + 3e ⇌ Fe(s) E = -0.04 V
2+
Anode: Fe(s)  Fe (aq) + 2e E = +0.44 V
Cathode: Fe3+(aq) + 3e  Fe(s) E = -0.04 V
Cell diagram: Fe(s)/Fe2+(aq) // Fe3+(aq)/Fe(s)

(ii) Calculate its standard potential, and

E = Ecathode – Eanode = (-0.04) – (-0.44) = +0.40 V (using expression)

(iii) Write an equation for the spontaneous reaction that occurs.

3Fe + 2Fe3+  3Fe2+ + 2Fe

(e) Potassium manganate(VII) and potassium dichromate(VI) are both strong

oxidizing agents.
(i) Which of the two is not used for the quantitative estimation of iron(II) ions in
a solution of iron(II) chloride?

KMnO4

(ii) Use data from the table to justify your answer.

Standard reduction potential of MnO4- /Mn2+ half-cell is more positive than
the Cl2/Cl- half-cell
Thus, MnO4- will oxidised Cl- ion to Chlorine.
Thus interfering with the estimation of the iron(II) ions during the
quantitative analysis.

(f) Equimolar solutions of acidified potassium manganate(VII), manganese(II)

sulphate, potassium dichromate(VI) and chromium(III) sulphate are mixed and
allowed to come to equilibrium.
(i) State which ion is oxidized and which is reduced.
MnO4- oxidised Cr3+ to Cr2O72-
Cr3+ reduced MnO4- to Mn2+

(ii) Use half-equations to construct the equation for the overall reaction that
occurs.
Based on
Cr2O72-(aq) + 14H+(aq) + 6e ⇌ 2Cr3+(aq) + 7H2O(l) +1.33 (1)
MnO4 (aq) + 8H (aq) + 5e ⇌ Mn (aq) + 4H2O(l)
- + 2+
+1.51 (2)

Reverse (1)X5 combine (2)X6

6MnO4- + 10 Cr3+ + 11H2O  6Mn2+ + 5Cr2O72- + 22H+
