Pythagorean Theorem Proof Project

The document provides instructions for a Pythagorean Proof Project. Students must select one proof of the Pythagorean Theorem, create a poster explaining the proof, and present it to the class. The project aims to help students understand the difference between a mathematical proof versus an example, ensure proofs are logical and avoid assumptions, and develop strong presentation skills. A rubric is provided to evaluate students' posters and presentations.

Pythagorean Proof Project

For this in-class project, you will:
● Select one proof of the Pythagorean Theorem from this list that you really like and feel
that you understand
● Make a poster explaining this proof
● Present your proof to the class next week
● Use your class time well so that you can complete it during the work periods allotted
for the project

Before doing this project, make sure that you understand the difference between a proof and
an example/demonstration
● A proof definitely for sure is true whereas an example/demonstration might just look
like it works
● A proof works for ALL cases whereas an example or demonstration just shows it to be
true for one or a few cases
● A proof explains WHY it’s true whereas an example or demonstration just shows that it
is true without explaining

If you need a refresher on the proof I showed in class, here is a video explaining it.

Checklist for project
❏ Select proof
❏ Write out its steps on scratch paper and make sure you understand each step
❏ Practice explaining the steps to a classmate and get feedback on whether it makes sense
❏ Revise proof until classmate agrees that it makes sense
❏ Write up the steps and diagram on poster paper or make a digital presentation
❏ Practice your presentation (it should be five minutes or shorter)

Rubric for poster and presentation:
