Week 1 Lab Task

What is a computer?

A computer is a device that can be instructed to carry out a random set of arithmetic or
logical operations automatically.

Or

Computers are man-made devices programmed to automatically perform a set of


actions and produce the desired outcome or results.

The ability of computers to follow a sequence of operations, called a program, make


computers very applicable to a wide range of tasks. Furthermore, computers can store
large amounts of data and can perform complex mathematical calculations.

Word Processing

Word processing is the production, storage and manipulation of text on a computer or


similar device. Software like the MS-Office suite is a well-known set of word processing
programs. The most commonly used of these are MS-Word, MS-PowerPoint and MS-
Excel. However these are not free and might not be affordable by most or even
available easily. Other word processing software exists that may be free or even
accessible online. For now we will briefly look at some features of MS-Word and
designing a well formatted document.

Activity

Based on the concepts discussed about word, design a document detailing information
about you. (Write a small passage about yourself e.g. your basic introduction your
interests, your achievements and your future plans.)
