Critical Thinking Questions

1. How does the music of the Classical period differ from the music of the Baroque period?
a. Music during the Classical period was more traditional and related to more

peaceful music. Baroque period had more rhythm , different tunes and a variety

of tones that made it different and less of an influence of the church like the

Classical period music was.

2. Choose two of the composers discussed in the lesson and listen to some of their work.

Which pieces did you listen to? How would you describe these pieces of music? What

makes the music characteristic of the Classical era? How are they similar, and how are

they different? What do you think these pieces are about, and how did the composers

musically convey those ideas?

a. Joseph Haydn and Beethoven. I listened to The Seasons and Trumpet Concerto

of Hadyn’s pieces. I would describe these works as both peaceful to listen to with

soothing melodies and calming tones. Of Beethovens work, I listened to Eroica

Symphony and the Fifth Symphony. I would describe his work to have more

emotion and dramatic stances than Hayden’s work. This new dramatic trend in his

work exhibited the influences and developments of the Romatic Era which was

developing from the Classical music era. They were similar in the ways because

Beethoven’s basics and fundamental structure came form the Classical music

period which was the same structure Hadyn had used.

3. What social and cultural influences impacted the music of the Classical period? Do you

think today’s music is influenced by social and cultural factors? Why or why not?

a. With people taking importance of the middle class and the middle class being

bigger, it had more of an influence on the Classical music which changed how

the music was produced. Opera and concerto became more popular as it was

used in public concerts and this led to a change in the languages used in the

music and more dialogue. I think today’s music is influenced by the older times

as much of the music is about religion or certain musicians would use the same

style as older musicians from the Classical period.

4. What was important about Vienna during the Classical period?

a. Vienna during the Classical period had an influence because alot of classical

music was spread throughout the area which made the music more popular.

There were more concerts and music production which became an important part

of the Vienna Classical Period.
