Each of us has our very own Mission, Vision, and even Goals. Each of us has our very

own agenda and that’s why we enrolled in different institutions. As a new student of Misamis

University, the school’s mission and vision didn’t give much impact as I thought it would. I was

a student at a God-centered school for more than a decade so both the school’s mission and

vision are similar to me. While reading the school’s historical background, I learned that God has

always been its center and is one of the main reasons why it stands proud up to this date.

Knowing that God is the very core of the institution assures me and greatly puts me once again at

ease. The Vision itself is the wall that holds the entire university. Its Mission though is a typical

mission that you would often see in different schools but the word ‘God-fearing’ makes a huge

difference. But, molding a student holistically and competent to meet global challenges is no

easy task and is easier said than done because this mission is too good to be true. Only a few of

the many MU graduates I know are proofs that the mission is accomplished but this also means

that the Mission is not impossible.

As for the university’s goals, I’ve heard and have even seen these greatly accomplished.

My older sister is a student here before me and she experienced helping and engaging with

people in the community. There were also researches conducted by the university’s students that

answer the community’s needs. But then, the last goal had got me thinking. It was “Provide

accessible education for all.” I could see that the university is doing its best to do to this,

especially now that face-to-face classes are not yet possible. They handed out free Premium
Microsoft Teams accounts and are going to give all students free data plans to be used for all of

our online classes. Some students are having difficulties in online classes but this is a huge step

for the university in providing accessible education for all. What got me thinking was the school

doesn’t provide Special Education Programs for People with Disabilities. I asked the MU page

about it first to make sure and they answered that they currently have no separate SPED

program. For me, if the university can offer this kind of program, a new door of opportunity

would opened thus, taking a huge leap - a step behind in providing accessible education to all.

The School’s core values are Honesty, Integrity, Loyalty, and Excellence. As what I’ve

learned, these are what promotes and shapes its Mission. As what I mentioned earlier these are

just to good to be true but then, what if I possess these now and even after I graduate? What if I

would live my life with these values? If I am honest in all my works starting now, I wouldn’t be

afraid if ever I am questioned with what I did and would become an engineer with no

hidden/illegal contracts. If I am a man with integrity, I would be conscious of my responsibilities

such as my school works and would become an engineer with high moral values. If I am loyal, I

would remain committed to the ideals of the university and would become an engineer who is

loyal to his contracts, employers and employees. If I am a person with excellence, I would

voluntarily let the university to help me bring out the best of my abilities and would become one

of the best engineers the school has produced. I would be extremely overjoyed if these ifs would

become a reality sooner but it’s very challenging to all of us yet it’s not impossible. What

worries me most is the fact that most students I know already showed the opposite of what the

school sees as ideals. I would be a complete hypocrite though if I said that I’m not one of them.

Right from the beginning of the classes, most of us already did some academic dishonesties,

some didn’t show manners and some didn’t even do their best. What scares me most is if the
teachers would turn on a blind eye on these acts. In the many years of being a student, I met

teachers that won’t scold students who cheated and some even encouraged us to do such acts. I

hope that it won’t be the same here. Although copying of answers is always present in most

schools and our generation today, I do feel that it is wrong to say that they shouldn’t be told that

they are wrong. I would like to tell them that but then, I would be a hypocrite-telling people to

not do things that are dishonest when I too am doing the same thing. If many students are molded

into having these core values, even starting with honesty, we would all be a step closer to making

the university’s mission easily possible. Possessing these values would guide us in our journeys

in becoming successful professionals and in becoming decent human beings.

To be honest, I thought of sugar coating this paper so this would appear good and give off

a positive vibe but it just doesn’t seem right to me. To make things clear, I’m not putting the

school’s Vision, Mission, and Goals down. To keep it short, I just want to show that these serve

as a general guide and an inspiration for students to get back up and make the Alma Mater

Proud. These would help us in our journeys during our stay her in the university and even after

we leave the institution.

As a new student of this institution, I will do everything I can to help make this College a

great place for me to study and grow to become a professional who is God-loving, people-

oriented, highly motivated, globally competitive, research-oriented, honest, loyal and a

professional with integrity and excellence.
