Question 1
A hardware support assistant from another branch calls in for support. People
at his branch are complaining that since new network cards were installed on
their computers, there have been many connectivity problems. In your
discussion with him, you realise that the network interface cards did not come
with any disk containing the original drivers, the support assistant downloaded
the drivers randomly from the internet. Since then, a number of computers have
been experiencing connectivity problems. Outline the basic principles that
apply to hardware support of peripheral devices.
Answer
Every device is controlled by software: Every device installed on the computer
needs device drivers to control it. Windows has imbedded device drivers for many
devices; however, there is need to install the specific device drivers for specific
devices.
When it comes to installing or supporting a device, the manufacturer knows best:
Follow the device documentation on how to install the device and the drivers.
Some devices need application software to use the device: With some devices,
there is a need for application software to make the device usable. Installing device
drivers will make the device communicate with the rest of the system.
A device is no faster than the port or slot it is designed to use. Special attention
should be payed when buying and installing hardware to the type of port to which
it is rated.
Use an administrative account to install device drivers. The administrative account
has privileges to change system settings.
Problems with devices can sometimes be solved by updating device drivers.
Drivers should always be updated to solve problems with the device or to add new
features
It is important to install only a single device at a time. If one has many devices to
install, it is advisable to install one device at a time, ensuring that the previous
device has successfully installed.
