Single Band 8 Port M

This document summarizes an attempt to design an 8-port MIMO antenna for mobile phones using self-isolated antenna elements. The antenna design included a T-shaped feeding element, an inverted U-shaped radiating element grounded at both ends, and two additional vertical stubs placed on the edge of the mobile device. The antenna was simulated using an FR-4 substrate but the results did not achieve the desired impedance matching and resonance frequency of 3.5GHz. Parameter sweeps were performed on the stub length and other dimensions but did not significantly improve the results.

Objective- To design single band 8 port MIMO antenna for mobile phone applications.

Introduction –

The fifth-generation (5G) communication technology can provide many advantages such as higher
transmission rate and shorter latency over the current 4G system. Due to limited space in mobile
device, to achieve high isolation for such big number of antennas the self isolation antenna element is
used. In this design, the eight antennas are designed on the edge side of mobile device. This antenna
contains a T-shaped feeding element, an inverted U-shaped radiating element (grounded at its two
ends), and two additional vertical stubs.

Procedure –

A system substrate of material FR-4 epoxy is chosen of dimensions 150mm×75mm×.8mm and a

ground plane of same dimension is drawn to the base of system substrate of thickness .035mm.

Over the system substrate two side substrate of same material is taken of dimensions
134mm×6mm×.8mm.

The inverted U-shaped and the vertical stubs of thickness ..035mm with a material copper is drawn on
the outer edge of the side substrates while the T-shaped feeding element is drawn on the inner edge of
side substrates.

The U- shaped element is connected to the ground and the T-shaped element is connected to the feed
line.

The T- shaped antenna element is feed using co-axial feeding where the outer cylinder is of Teflon
material and inner cylinder is of PEC.

The radiation box is drawn with a distance greater than λ/4 distance from all sides except the side to
which the port assigned (the port is touching the radiation box else the error for port assignment is
thrown.

Result

The results are not what we looking for. The parametric analysis is done where the length of the stub
is changed and the length of T-shaped element and the great changes won’t be observed in impedance
matching and the resonance frequency i.e 3.5GHz.
