Falling In Love

By Jeremiah John Arrington

1 INT. NIGHT CLUB - NIGHT
Opening of movie. Bill and his friends are hanging at the
club talking about women.

RICH
Man, that’s exactly why I don’t get
serious with anybody.
BILL
(rolling eyes)
What are you talking about, man?
RICH
I get what I want and I’m out! No
extra stress.

JAMES
You know, there is something wrong
with you. You know that, right?
Something ain’t right. I know you
heard that old saying, "If you
don’t know the lessons of history,
your bound to repeat them"? Sound
familiar
You can hear James’ sarcasm.
RICH
Here we go. My philosopher and his
quote of the day babble again. Why
you mad bro?
He looks at the guys.

RICH
(continued)
Because I’m not like you two? Huh?
Fall in love with the first cute
chick I see? Nah, I don’t have time
for all that. I get what I need and
that’s it. I’m good!
Rich takes a drink from his glass.
RAY
For the record, I don’t fall in
love with just anybody. She has to
have class, direction, personality.
Feel me?
The guys nod in agreement.

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 2.

BILL
We get it man. But tell this guy
here so he understands it.
He points to Rich.

Rich shakes his head and takes another drink unmoved by the
words.
RICH
She can have all the class you want
her to have but when those lights
go out all that class and other
stuff going right out the window.
If you catch my drift.
Rich shrugs and keeps sipping looking around the club.

BILL
(mumbling)
This guy can’t be serious with this
crap.

RAY
Sad to say, he really is serious,
dawg.
Bill and Ray shake their heads. They nod to the bartender
for another round.

RICH
The sad part IS you two don’t know
how to avoid falling in love.

A nice looking woman walks by. She catches Rich’s attention.

RICH
(continued)
I’ll be right back.

He sits his drink on the bar and starts to walk off.

JAMES
Where you going, Romeo?
Rich smiles and calls over his shoulder

RICH
That way! I think I’m in love.
The guys give a low chuckle.

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 3.

BILL
I thought you don’t fall in love?
RICH
Only for tonight my friend. Take
notes. You might learn a thing of
two.
The guys grab their drinks and start to head off.
RAY
There is seriously something wrong
with him, man.
BILL
That’s Rich for you. You got to
learn when to take him serious.

JAMES
Never!
They laugh.

2 INT. MARKETING FIRM - DAY

Back at the job, TIA, is on the phone talking to her friend
about the job promotion that’s up for grabs.
GAIL(OS)
I’m telling you, you’re the best
person for the job. Can’t you read
the writing on the wall?
TIA
(sighing)
I don’t know, Gail. Gary in
Research is trying for it also. You
know he got skills. Phenomenal
skills.

GAIL(OS)
He might have skills. But you got
this! With all the hard work and
late nights you’ve put in...
Tia twirls the phone cord around her finger

GAIL(OS)
(continued)
...they would be crazy to pass you
up. Mr. Bradson really likes you. I
hear him talk bout you all the
time.

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 4.

Tia sits up in her seat.

TIA
I hope you’re right. You know how
this game is played in office
politics. I try hard to stay away
from all that because in the end,
it’s never worth the real price you
eventually pay.
Tia gets up from her chair. And walks to a file cabinet.

TIA
(continued)
Let me get off this phone and get
back to these reports. If I’m going
to make partner, it will be because
of my hard work to this firm.
Period!
GAIL(OS)
That’s my girl. Claim that.

Tia chuckles.
GAIL(OS)
Before you go, are you coming to
Steven’s party?

TIA
I don’t know. I heard about it and
truth is, I’m not really in the
partying mood lately.
GAIL(OS)
Come on. You need to get out and
let your hair down. Give your mind
a rest break.
TIA
I’ll think about it girl. Send me
the dates again.
GAIL(OS)
Again? It should be in your email.

TIA
Okay. I’ll check again. Let me get
back to these reports. Talk to you
later.

GAIL
Bye girl,
3 INT. STEVEN’S PARTY - NIGHT

The party is in full effect. A lot of people dancing and

having fun. Drinks are going around, games being played and
lots of conversation.
Kate and Gail stand near a window talking.

KATE
Yeah, my job is considering
relocation and downsizing to one
office in New York.

GAIL
Well, what are you going to do if
your job shuts down the office
here?
KATE
Well, my mom’s friend has a law
firm and she said I can do some
paralegal work over there.
Gail grabs two drinks from a passing server.

She smiles.
GAIL
Well that seems like a great plan.
Good luck.

KATE
Thanks.
They begin to look around and scour the crowd. Gail starts
to move to the music.

GAIL
This is a really nice party. What’s
the occasion?
KATE
Steven just got another promotion.
GAIL
Again? That man has all the luck.
KATE
(chuckling)
Tell me about it.

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 6.

GAIL
I think I heard somewhere that he’s
related to someone in the executive
department.

Kate lowers her drink.

KATE
Really? Stop it.
GAIL
I mean who gets three promotions in
a year?
KATE
Very true.

Steven walks over with a friend with drinks in hand. He’s

smiling. Excitement all on his face.
STEVEN
Ladies, how are you doing tonight?

GAIL
We’re doing well. But not as well
as you Mr. Corporate man.
Congratulations.
They smile.

STEVEN
Thank you. I appreciate that. You
two haven’t seen Bill around have
you?

KATE
Not yet. But knowing him, he’ll be
here. Bill never misses a good
party. You can count on that.

CAMERA PANS TO THE FRONT DOOR AS TIA WALKS IN.

KATE
There’s Tia.
Kate waves her hand before calling out.

KATE
Tia! Over here!
Tia heads toward them smiling.

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 7.

TIA
Hey ladies. It’s packed in here!
Kind of glad y’all convinced me to
come.
Steven clears his throat.
KATE
Oh, I’m sorry. Tia, this is Steven.
The man of the hour. Steven, this
is my home girl Tia.
STEVEN
Hello Tia. Pleasure to meet you.
Would you like a drink.

TIA
Thank you. A drink would be great.
Non alcoholic though. And
congratulations.

Steven smiles.
STEVEN
No problem. I think I can come up
with something for you.

Steven turns to walk away. He bumps into Bill.

STEVEN
Bill, keep these beautiful ladies
company while I get drinks.

They shake hands.

BILL
Good evening, ladies. How is
everyone?

Bill and Tia lock eyes with each other as they begin to have
conversation.
CLIP TO LATER WITH BILL AND TIA TALKING AND LAUGHING.

BILL
How long have you known Steven and
Kate?
TIA
Well I just met Steven tonight
actually. Kate and I went to school
together as kids. Yourself?
Sipping his drink.

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 8.

BILL
I went to college with them both.
We spent most of our senior year
with each other. Practically every
day.

TIA
Wow. Sounds like y’all had a lot of
fun during those days.
Bill nods his head.

BILL
Yeah, but lots of studying too. So,
tell me why someone as attractive
as you, is here alone?

Tia cracks a small smile.

TIA
Who says I’m here alone?
Bill smiles and nods.

BILL
The fact that we’ve been talking
for quite a while and no one has
come to rescue you from me.

TIA
Ha. Touche’
Tia laughs. Bill laughs
TIA
The same reason you’re here alone.
They laugh again.
BILL
I see you’re a comedian. So tell
me, funny girl, when, how, and
where can I see you again?
TIA
(smiling)
We’ll just have to figure that one
out.
BILL
What’s to figure out?

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 9.

TIA
Listen, Bill...?
BILL
Yes. It’s Bill.

TIA
Right. Listen, Bill, I’m an
extremely busy woman with lots of
responsibilities and a job that I’m
married to. Dating is not a
priority for me right now.
Tia looks around. Bill looks around to see what she’s
looking for.
BILL
Missing something?
TIA
Something to drink.
BILL
Want me to grab you something?
TIA
No. I wont be here much longer.
BILL
Okay. Well listen, pretty you are.
But being married to your work is
another way of saying you’re not
enjoying life to the fullest.
Happiness should be your first
priority.

TIA
Is that so.
BILL
That is so. So, now when did you
say we can see each other again?
TIA
I didn’t.

BILL
Well at least give me your number
and we can talk bout it more later
tonight.

(CONTINUED)

TIA
You sure do move fast. But giving
you my number is something I can
arrange.

Background music playing while they each pull their cell

phones out to trade numbers.
At the other end of the room, Gail and Kate are talking.
KATE
Look at Tia and Bill.
Gail turns to look.
KATE
They seem to be getting along
pretty good.
GAIL
They look good together. Jeez!
KATE
They sure do. But you know Tia.
She’ll probably push him away like
all the rest of the men she’s
dated.
GAIL
I don’t know Kate. I got a
different feeling about this guy.
Look at her face.
CAMERA CUTS TO TIA’S FACE

Tia is smiling and laughing.

GAIL(OS)
She looks like she’s having a good
time.

CUT BACK TO GAIL AND KATE

KATE
Bill is cool. We went to college
together. She’s probably boring him
about work stuff.
GAIL
I don’t think so

KATE
Well we will see soon enough. Let
me go find me somebody to snuggle
up to.

They laugh and walk off.

4 EXT. FORT GREENE PARK - DAY
Bill and Kate are walking talking and he’s asking about Tia.

BILL
So tell me more about Tia.
KATE
(chuckling)
What do you want to know? She
graduated from NYU. She’s in
advertising for this big firm. And
yes, she is very single.
Bill laughs heartily.

BILL
Okay. So, do you think she would go
for a guy like me? Considering my
background and all.
Kate looks at him strange.

KATE
What background? Being rich? Why
wouldn’t she be okay with that?
Hell, I wish I could find a rich
man.
Bill shakes his head.
KATE
I’m kidding. I don’t know Bill. It
seems like you guys were getting
along well at the party. Tia’s very
hard working. She’s’ focused and
always putting her work first.
That’s the primary reason for all
her other relationships failing.

Bill nods his head, taking in her words.

BILL
So, you’re saying my chances are
slim to none. Right?

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 12.

KATE
No. I’m telling you that it’s going
to take a special kind of man and a
lot of persistence and patience.
I’ve never been one for playing
match maker but I think you two
will hit off. You should give her a
call.

Bill smiles.
BILL
I think I will. Thanks Katy bear.
Kate rolls her eyes at the nickname.

KATE
You’re welcome. Remember,
persistence and patience. She’s
gonna play a little hard to get but
that’s a girl thing.

BILL
Okay. I got you!
5 INT. TIA’S PARENT’S HOUSE - DAY

Tia is at her parent’s house. They’re talking about how much

Tia has accomplished in such a short time at the firm.
MRS. MOORE
We’re so proud of you. You’ve come
so far in your life, sweetie. All
the hard work paid off.
Tia beams with pride.
MRS. MOORE
(continued)
You’re working for a great firm and
about to make partner!
TIA
Thank you, mommy. It’s really no
big deal.
MR. MOORE
(looking up from his magazine)
No big deal? All of the pushing we
did with you to keep you on track,
chasing away the boys? All that is
a very big deal.
Tia looks sheepish.

TIA
You’re right dad. I’m thankful for
you and mom. And for pushing me to
be great.

Tia gets up from the table. Her phone rings

TIA
(to her parents)
Let me get this call.

Tia grabs her phone and looks at the caller I.D.

TIA
Hello?
BILL(O.S)
Tia?
TIA
Yes. Who may I ask is calling?

BILL(O.S)
This is Bill. From Steven’s party
the other night.
TIA
(smiling)
Oh Bill. Hi. How did you get my
number.
BILL(O.S)
I asked for you it at the party. You
gave it to me. Is this a bad time?

TIA
No. Not at all.
SPLIT SCREEN OF THE TWO

TIA
Did I see you earlier today by the
A Train, the movies and the bank?
BILL

No. Haven’t been to any of those
places today.
TIA

Are you following me? You can be
honest?

(CONTINUED)

BILL
(laughing)
There goes that comedy routine
again. I think you made the wrong
career choice. Making people laugh
is definitely your calling.
TIA
Is that right? What makes you such
an expert on what my career choice
should be?

BILL
Well, I haven’t stopped smiling the
entire time we’ve been on the
phone. That should tell you
something.

TIA
(blushing)
Well, happiness is good for the
soul.

BILL
It is indeed. Does that mean you’re
good for my soul?
TIA
(off guard)
Wow.
Bill clears his throat to kill the silence.
BILL
Would you like to do lunch today?
TIA
Um...you know what? Yeah. WE can do
that. Time and place?

BILL
Let me call and get a reservation
and I’ll call you back.
TIA
(smiling)
Do that. Talk to you soon.
BILL
Okay.
They smile and hang up the phone.

6 INT. TIA’S HOUSE - DAY

Tia is trying on outfits for her date with Bill. Brenda sits
on the bed flipping through a magazine.
Tia walks out in a suit made for a business meeting.

BRENDA
I know damn well you’re not
planning on wearing that. On a
date? Girl bye.

Tia looks down at her outfit.

TIA
What’s wrong with this?

BRENDA
(still look at her magazine)
No.
Tia sighs and walks back to the closet.

TIA
Should I wear a dress?
BRENDA
(closing the magazine)
Absolutely. Not a funeral dress
either. A dress that says "I’m
available"
Tia gives her a look from the closet door.
BRENDA
(continued)
That says come get some of this hot
buttered rum.
Tia laughs from the closet.

TIA
Okay let me see what I have in
here.
BRENDA
Make sure it something that shows
off your cleavage. Makes your ass
look great. You know men love a big
nice ass.
Tia sucks her teeth.

Finally Tia walks out in a black dress. Brenda smiles.
BRENDA
Perfect. Just enough T&A to make
his knees buckle but keep your rep
in tact.
They both laugh.

FADE TO BLACK
7 INT. RESTAURANT - NIGHT
Bill and Tia are sitting in a restaurant eating and talking.

TIA
So, is this how you woo all the
ladies? Or is this special
treatment just for me?
Bill reaches for his glass but stops to answer her question.

BILL
I try to be impressive when on a
date. But this is different. You’re
different! I mean since that night
at the party, I can’t stop thinking
about you.
Tia begins to blush and tries to fight a smile.
TIA
Cute line.
BILL
No line, comedian.
TIA
Okay. Let me find our you’re
sensitive.
The each grab their drink. Tia sips first looking over the
rim at Bill.

BILL
Nope. Just honest
Bill sips.

(CONTINUED)

TIA
Okay. So I can I be honest with
you?
BILL
Absolutely.
Tia fumbles with the napkin in her lap.
TIA
I really enjoyed our conversation
at the party. I think you’re a
great guy.
Bill sits back in his seat.
BILL
I hear a "but" coming.
TIA
(chuckling)
No "buts".

BILL
How would you know I’m a great guy?
You only met me once. I might be a
stalker.
Bill grins.

TIA
You probably are! I told you, you
kept popping up where I was.

They laugh.
TIA
I really don’t go out much. It
takes a special kind of man to hold
my attention and I must admit
you’ve been doing a pretty good
job.
BILL
I guess I’m the lucky one, huh?

TIA
Absolutely. But you said it. Not
me.
BILL
I can’t wait to buy tickets to your
stand up routine.

MRS. JONES
I thought I’d find you back here.

Bill looks over at his mother.

BILL
Hey Ma!

HE walks to hug and kiss her.

MRS. JONES
"Hey ma?" Is that all I get? How
come you haven’t been over for
dinner? I wonder what got you tied
up. Or...who got you tied up.
Bill looks sheepish.
BILL
I was waiting to tell you.

Mrs. Jones looks at him sternly.

MRS. JONES
Tell me what?

BILL
That I’ve met someone.
MRS. JONES
You did? When?

be the one.
MRS. JONES
Oh really?
BILL
Yeah. She’s really special. She’s
nothing like all the other women,
ma. She’s smart, passionate,
beautiful.
He looks off.
Mrs. Jones smiles.

BILL
It’s just something about her.
Something different. I don’t know,
ma.
Mrs. Jones fixes her clothes and then looks up at her son.

MRS. JONES
Well, when do I get to meet this
something different?
BILL
Soon, ma. Very soon.
MRS. JONES
Alright baby.

BILL
Ma, what you doing in Brooklyn,
though?
MRS. JONES

abandoned me, out to lunch. Care to
join me?
BILL
Of course.

They stand.

mother still hasn’t gotten here

Bill steps forward to greet her mother.

BILL
Hello Mrs. Moore. Pleasure to meet
you. I see where Tia gets her good
looks from.
MRS. MOORE
(blushing)
Thank you baby.

Bill turns to Tia’s father. He extends his hand.

MR. MOORE

Tia’s father grabs his hand and they shake.

BILL
Pleased to meet you sir. Tia has
told me many great things about
you.

MR. MOORE

Everyone gets seated and begin to talk.

Bill chuckles.

Tia’s dad looks confused.

MR. MOORE
You don’t have to work? What do you
mean by that?

BILL
My family is financially secure so
I really never had to work for a
living.
MR. MOORE
Well you know Tia is a hard working
Bill. She was raised with great
values and respect for working
hard. That’s why she’s excelling
like she is in her profession. I’m
sure you know this already.

Bill clears his throat.

BILL
Yes sir. I know Tia is an extremely
hard working.

Tia sits on the arm of the char that Bill is sitting on when
a knock comes to the door.
Tia opens the door to Bill’s mother.

TIA
Good evening, Mrs. Jones. Please
come in.
Mrs. Jones walks in and smiles.

MRS. JONES

things. Balance is definitely not
what it used to be.

MRS. JONES
Thank you.
Everyone laughs.

Tia walks in the kitchen and heads back.

TIA
Everyone read to eat?
MR. MOORE
Been ready. My stomach is touching
my back.
Everyone laughs and head towards the kitchen.
10 INT. DINNER TABLE - LATER

MR. MOORE
Ruby, Bill was just telling us that
he doesn’t have to work. I find
that a little disturbing.

MRS. JONES
What do you mean "disturbing"?
Mrs. Jones sits her fork down.

TIA

Dad
MRS. JONES
My husband and I worked for every

Our financial blessings allowed him
to focus on his education. Which is
one of the best. Bill, in all
reality can do and be whatever he

make sure they had what neither of

Bill sits quietly

MRS. MOORE
What was that?
Mrs. Jones looks at Mrs. Moore.

MRS. JONES
Freedom. Freedom to do whatever he
wants, even if that’s to do
absolutely nothing but live and
enjoy his life.

Bill and Tia look at each other hoping one would interrupt.
BILL
Well, this food looks delicious.
MRS. JONES
Yes it does.
She gives Bill a look that let’s him to know he needs to

11 INT. KITCHEN - LATER

After everyone leaves the apartment, Tia and Bill have a
conversation while washing dishes.
TIA
So, what do you think about
tonight?
BILL
Well, I see we are going to have an
interested road ahead of us.
Especially if we have more nights
like tonight.
Bill chuckles lightly.
TIA
The food was great and your mother
is something special. I see where
you get your charm from.

BILL
Thanks babe. I enjoyed your parents

He was a great man. He worked for
the government managing the gold
mines. He discovered new mines off
the coast of the Indian Ocean and
became extremely wealthy. He always
said to me, "Bill, I’m working
hard so that you can have a
different and better life. Free to
choose your own path."
Tia reaches out to him. They hug.

BILL
I miss him a lot, Tia.
TIA
He sounds like a wonderful man. I
know my dad can appear to be pushy
but he’s really a sweet man who
just wants what’s best for his
daughter.
Bill kisses her forehead.

BILL
I understand.
12 INT. BEDROOM - LATER

Bill kisses Tia. He bites her lip with his teeth. She grabs
the back of his head.
Bill lifts her up off the floor. Her legs wrap around his
waist and he walks her to the bed.

She kiss him and they begin to make love again.

13 INT. TIA’S HOUSE - NIGHT
Bill tosses and turns on the bed. He reaches over for Tia
but she’s not there.
He gets out of bed. He heads to the living room to find Tia
there.
BILL
Hey babe. What are you doing up so
late?
Tia looks up from her laptop. Her glasses sitting on the
edge of her nose.

TIA
Some of us have to work for a
living, Bill.
Bill looks shocked.

BILL
What is that supposed to mean?
TIA
I have goals and dreams. I’m sorry
if my working too much bothers you.

BILL
I’m used to it now. You spend more
time at the job, doing for the job,
or calling the job than you do me.
I’m not even complaining anymore.
Tia removes her glasses.
TIA
Well what do you call what you’re
doing now?
BILL
Observing.

TIA
You know what Bill, it’s too late
for all of this. What I’m going to
do is shut my computer down and
come to bed. Will that make you
happy?
Bill turns around to head back up the stairs.

BILL
Perfectly.
MONTAGE BEGINS
14 EXT. BILL’S HOUSE - DAY

Bill wakes up to find Tia not in the bed beside him. He

walks outside to find her car gone from the parking space.
15 INT. TIA’S HOUSE - NIGHT

Tia walks in late from work. Tia tries to sneak into bed
unnoticed without waking Bill. As Tia goes to sleep, Bill’s
eyes open.
16 INT. MARKETING FIRM - NIGHT

Tia is pulling another late night at the marketing firm.

17 INT. POOL HALL - NIGHT
Rich and Ray are playing pool. Bill is calling Tia and her
phone goes straight to voicemail. Bill clearly looks
disappointed.
18 INT. TIA’S HOUSE - NIGHT
Bill’s eats alone in front of the TV. Tia is eating in
front of her computer. They cross paths in the hallway
without speaking or looking at each other.
MONTAGE ENDS

Bill gives him the side eye

BILL
Yes fool. Her name is Tia. And
things are okay.

They continue running.

RICH
Come on man. You can be honest.
We’re your boys.

BILL
What do you want me to say? That
we’re barely spending any quality
time together? She works too much?
Yes she works too much. I said it.

RICH
Sorry I asked man. My bad
RAY
When was the last time you had a
home cooked meal? Or even went on a
date with her?
They stop running.
BILL
Come on man. That’s not fair. WE
spend time together.
RICH
When she has the time. Right?

BILL
(sighs)
What do you want me to do? You’re
the love doctor. What do you
suggest.

Bill is frowning. Ray is quiet.

RICH
Get you someone else and be happy.
Simple.

BILL
Tia makes me happy!
RAY
You can’t be happy man. You’re with
us most of the time. You should
have stayed single if you were
gonna continue to live like someone
single.

Bill is getting upset.

BILL
Why? So I can end up like you guys?
I’ll pass on that.

RAY
All I’m saying is that she works
too much and the crazy thing is she
doesn’t have to. Come on man. You
got all the money a man could ever
need in life. You could give her
whatever she wants.
Bill waves his hand for James to stop talking
BILL
Alright. I get the picture. What
y’all doing later?
RICH
Shooting some pool. It’s Thursday.
Drinks are half off. You coming
out.
BILL
Nah. Just asking. Tia and I have
plans.

Bill daps them up.

BILL
I’ll catch y’all later.
Rich and James watch him walk away.

RAY
Too bad he’s going home to eat a
Hungry Man dinner.

RICH
He needs to take some of that money
and buy a damn backbone.
They laugh.

20 INT. TIA’S HOUSE - NIGHT

Bill is back at Tia’s house with dinner on the table. He’s
sitting alone. He’s visibly upset. Tia walks in happily.

(CONTINUED)

TIA
Hey babe. Oh wow, you cooked? I’m
sorry. I didn’t know you were
cooking. Is it cold?

BILL
Yeah. It is. And you didn’t know I
was cooking because it was a
surprise since you said you’d be
coming home early.

TIA
Things got a little hectic for me
this evening at work. My boss asked
me to stay late. There is a
campaign that can really take the
firm to the next level.

Bill, starts to clear the table.

BILL
I understand all of that. You could
have at least called. I don’t know
how much longer I can do this.
Tia frowns.
TIA
You don’t know how much longer you
can do what? What do you want me to
do? You want me to quit my job?
Will that make you happy?
BILL
You can quit! I have money to take
care of both of us for the rest of
our lives.
TIA
Well that’s not happening. I’ve
come too far in life to stop now.
And this is not about the money.
That’s your problem now, you think
you can buy everything. I have news
for you, you can’t buy me. I’m
going to bed.

She turns to leave the table. Bill follows her.

BILL
Tia, you act like you’re the only
one in this relationship.

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 31.

TIA
How do I do that? By standing for
something and refusing to fall for
anything?

BILL
Why are you making this so
difficult
Bill sits on the bed.

TIA
I didn’t grow up like you. My
mother and father worked hard for
everything so that’s all I know.
I’m sorry if I didn’t grow up with
a silver spoon in my mouth.

BILL
(quietly)
What are you trying to say?
TIA
(sighing)
Nothing. I’m tired and I’m going to
bed.
BILL
Okay. Go to bed. I’m going to the
bar.
Bill stands up from the bed and grabs his keys.
TIA
Do that. Drink your problems away.
You’ll wake up in the morning and
the problem will still be here.
Right along with your hangover.
Tia sits on the bed and begins to cry.

21 INT. POOL HALL - LATER

Bill walks into the pool hall to see his friends laughing
and drinking.

RICH
Look who just walked in! Well well
well.
BILL
Not in the mood for your jokes,
Rich.

Rich stops laughing.

RICH
Oh man. I’m just kidding. What
happened?
Bill grabs a beer and a pool stick.
BILL
I cooked dinner tonight. Just
trying to surprise her and as usual
she walks in late! Real late.
RICH
(shaking his head)
I told you, man. I told you!
RAY
Come on man. Can’t you see he’s
hurting.

RICH
Yeah. But if he listened to me he
wouldn’t be going through this
right now.
RAY
So you hit him what an "I told you
so?" Cold man. Real cold.
BILL
Nah, It’s okay. Maybe he was right.
Maybe it is time to call it quits.
RICH
You heard the man Ray. Maybe I’m
right!
(to Bill)
Now come on over here and let me
buy you a drink.
RAY
Buy a drink? With what money? I
been paying for the drinks all
night. You said you were broke.
Ray looks upset.
RICH
Oh I am. But I do have an emergency
fund and this, I do believe is an
emergency.
They laugh including Bill.

BILL
Don’t worry guys. Drinks are on me.
RICH/RAY
Even better!

Rich and Ray high five. Bill shakes his head

22 INT. TIA’S HOUSE - DAY
Tia is on the phone with Gail

TIA
I really don’t know what to do
Gail. Every time I get into a
relationship, I find myself at this
same place. This same crossroads. I
swear sometimes I feel like it’s
not even worth the effort. I’m just
overwhelmed.
GAIL(OS)
Well maybe you and Bill need to
take a break. A little time apart
might not be so bad right now. You
know what they say, "absence makes
the heard grow fonder."
Tia leans back on the bed and folds a pillow into her lap.

TIA
I don’t know. You really think we
should I mean I really like him. I
think I even love him. I don’t want
to do anything to jeopardize that.
He’s really the balance I need in
my life.
GAIL(OS)
Truth be told boo, you guys have
been fighting a lot lately. You
both seem to be on different pages
in this thing. You go to work. He
stays home. And you never let him
forget that he stays home.

TIA
So I’m being to pushy? Too
judgmental? Am I wrong for wanting
him to work hard like I do?

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 34.

GAIL(OS)
Slow down. I’m not saying any of
that. He’s not you. And until you
see that you’re going to always
hound him about that. His life was
different than yours. It still is.
You can’t measure him based on how
you think he should be living.
TIA
I’m sorry Gail. Maybe you’re right.
If I focus more on him and not his
upbringing, we might be able to
find common ground. Some time apart
might be good for us after all. You
know a little time to do some soul
searching.

GAIL(OS)
You think about it and let me know.
Either way, I got your back. Get
some rest and I’ll see you
tomorrow.

TIA
Alright. Talk to you tomorrow.
Tia sits up.

TIA
And thanks Gail.
GAIL(OS)
For what?

TIA
For being a voice of reason. And my
rock. I love you girl.
GAIL(OS)
If the shoe was on the other food,
I’d expect the same from you. I
love you, too.
They hang up and Tia stretches out on the bed.

23 EXT. BROOKLYN BRIDGE CAROUSEL- NIGHT

Bill and Tia are sitting quietly. Both somber.
BILL

night. I knew we needed some space.

Bill smiles a small smile.

BILL
You look great, by the way. That
color makes you radiate

TIA
Thanks, Bill. You have a way with
words. Which makes what I need to
say even harder.

Bill looks confused.

BILL
What is it? What do you have to
tell me?

Tia sits for a moment before starting.

TIA
What are we doing, Bill? I mean
really. All we do is argue. We
hardly have any time to spend with
each other.
BILL
Whose fault is that?
TIA
See! That’s another thing. All the
problems seem to be my fault.
They both take a deep breath,
TIA
I think we need to stop this before
it gets any deeper and either of us
get anymore hurt than we already
are.

Bill nods his head.

BILL
You know it’s strange that you say
that. I’ve been thinking the same
thing.

TIA
(surprised)
Really?

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 36.

BILL
Yeah. We both know this wasn’t
working for us a while ago. We were
both trying but that wasn’t enough.

TIA
I want so much more than this. We
come from totally different worlds.
BILL
You’re right. We do. But that
doesn’t make me a bad guy. I’ve
been blessed to have the life I
have. I don’t feel bad about that.
TIA
You shouldn’t. But it’s like you
don’t value anything. Money, time,
anything! Not even me.
BILL
How can you say that? I’ve done
everything I could to make this
work. To show you I cared about
you. But because I refuse to work
my life away I don’t value those
things? That’s not fair.

TIA
Well, it may not be fair but it is
the way it is. I enjoy my life and
what I do. Let’s just say our
goodbyes.

Tia stands up and grabs her purse. She starts to walk way.
BILL
I could never say goodbye to you. I
love you. But I am willing to give
us this time apart to figure out
where we need to go from here.
Bill stands up and kisses her on the cheek. He walks off.
Tia watches him leave.

MONTAGE: CLIPS OF THEM LIVING. WITHOUT EACH OTHER. UNHAPPY.

24 INT. CAR - DAY

Bill and James are riding around the city. They start to
talk about Tia.
JAMES
And why did you let her go again?
BILL
I really didn’t let her go. We just
sort of...I don’t know. It’s
complicated. We need to do some
searching.
James looks over at Bill and back ahead.
JAMES
That’s cool. I understand that.
BILL
I don’t know man. I’m almost
starting to believe Right was
right.

James hit the breaks.

JAMES
Rich? Man please. Rich is the last
person you need to be thinking
about. He’s being Rich and we both
know that his relationship with
Lisa is the reason he talks like he
does. He has a negative outlook
when it comes to love.

BILL
They were so much in love man. That
breakup literally turned him into a
different man over night.

JAMES
Exactly. And now he wont let
himself love again. Anybody that
loves, he thinks they’re crazy.
He’s just bitter. Please man.
Don’t use him as an example.

BILL
I don’t know man. Maybe you’re
right. Maybe I’m just reading this
whole thing wrong.

JAMES
Do you love her?
BILL
What do you think?

Bill looks at James waiting for his response.

James comes to a stop.
JAMES
I think if you really love her,
then you should fix it. Make it
right. Try changing and giving an
inch to make her life a bit easier.
Figure out what bothers her man.
Change is good. Change is growth
man.
BILL
Me not working is her biggest
issue.

JAMES
Then go to work.
BILL
Work for who? It’s not like I need
the money. The only way I’d be
satisfied working is if I was
working for myself.
James smiles.
JAMES
Then work for yourself. She just
wants a man that’s productive. It
might be sexy to her to see you
going off to work, striving for
something.

BILL
You’re starting to sound like my
dad. He’d always tell me, "son, one
day you’re gonna find yourself
falling. If you hit the ground,
it’s going to hurt like hell. Now I
understand what he was talking
about.
JAMES
What’s that?

(CONTINUED)

BILL
Falling. Falling in love. That’s
what he was telling me and he was
right bro. It hurts. It hurts a
lot.

JAMES
Then get off the ground, dust
yourself off and finish the race.
Find something to strive for. Go
flip burgers. If not, but the
burger joint.
BILL
You may be right. I got an idea but
I’m going to need your help.

JAMES
Lay it on me, man. I’m down
already.
25 EXT. BUSINESS CENTER - DAY

Bill walks into the business development center. He

approaches the counter.
DISTANCE SHOT OF HIM GETTING A PAMPHLET OF INFORMATION.
26 INT. LIBRARY - DAY

Bill sits at the library table with a pile of books on

business development, HR management, commerce, and E-trade.
He’s writes useful information into his notebook. Tried, he
drops his pen down to rub his eyes and then continues
studying.
27 INT. LIBRARY - LATER
Bill’s face is in one of the books, sleep.

Tia, Kate and Gail are all sitting at a table on break.
KATE
Okay, it’s time for you to get up

Kate and Gail reach out to rub her shoulders.
KATE
I knew it.
GAIL
Want me to hire someone to beat him
up?

Tia chuckles.
TIA
No...I just miss him. I’m wondering
if I made a mistake. We both
decided this was best but, I’m
starting to second guess the
decision.
Tears weld up in Tia’s eyes.
GAIL
You have to get a hold of yourself.
You have so much riding on this
promotion and you can’t let this
break you down and ruin your
chances of making partner, do you
understand?
TIA
Yeah, it’s just...
GAIL
This was a mutual decision. You
both needed a break. Take this time
to make it work for you then you
can eventually enjoy the best of
both worlds.

Tia smiles.
TIA
You’re right. I just can’t believe
I let his happen again.

They all hug again.

BRENDA
You know what, let’s go to Sip and
Paint. We need a girl’s Powwow.

All the girls agree. Tia looks skeptical.

KATE
We’re in. Tia, too.
Tia rolls her eyes.

29 INT. SIP AND PAINT

The girls each sit in front of their easel. They all have a
glass of red wine. Paint brushes in hand.

TIA
I’m so glad y’all got me to come
out. Between breaking up with Bill
and work, I’ve been losing my mind.
KATE
Well as hard as you’ve worked on
this deal, you need to relax.
GAIL
Yes just relax, you got this. Stop
over thinking.
BRENDA
Exactly because I’m starting to see
wrinkles in your forehead.

KATE

That’s foul. Your forehead looks
fine girl.

you, just keep frowning.
They all laugh. Tia can’t help but laugh as well.
TIA
Shut up Brenda. That’s why I need
new friends.
The ladies continue painting, sipping and laughing.
30 EXT. OFFICE BUILDING - DAY

Bill and James are standing in front of a building with a

red ribbon and bow. They are holding a large pair of
scissors.
JAMES
Thank you everyone for coming. Bill

and James Consulting.
They slice the ribbon.
JAMES
Our doors are officially open.
Applause rings out. Camera and cell phone flashes go off.

Tia ruffles through files and pulls out one. She leafs
through the papers before closing the drawer and heading
out.
32 INT. CONFERENCE ROOM - MOMENTS LATER
Gail, Kate and Mr. Bradson and other people are all waiting
in the conference room. Tia walks through the door.

Mr. Bradson hands Tia a bouquet of flowers.
TIA
What’s going on?
MR. BRADSON
On behalf of Carson Bradson

I’m trying to close this deal on
this chick and it’s about to go

They all chuckle.
JAMES
Something is seriously wrong with
you dude. You’re sick in the head.
RICH
Nsh, what’s sick is you two
spending so much time together.
Yuck!

Thanks Dad.
MR. MOORE
Are you happy, sweetheart?
TIA
Yeah Dad. I’m very happy.
MR. MOORE
I don’t detect happiness in your
spirit, Tia.

TIA
I don’t know daddy. It feels like
something is missing. I’ve wanted
to get to this point in my life for
a long time and it just feels like
something isn’t right.
Tia sips a drink.

Goodnight daddy. I love you, too.

35 INT. COFFEE SHOP - DAY

Bill and Tia bump into each other at a well known coffee
shop.
TIA
Bill, oh my God. I can’t believe
it’s you.
Tia hugs him.
BILL
How are you Tia? It’s been a long
time.
TIA
Yes it has. I’m good. How have you
been?

BILL
I’ve been doing pretty good.
Missing you a lot but taking on new
challenges. Trying new things in
life.

Tia blushes. Bill blushes.

TIA
Good for you. What kind of new
challenges have you taken on?
Bill smiles brightly.
BILL
You’re not going to believe this.
But...I am actually working now.

TIA
Well, Mr. Businessman, I’m
impressed. You and James started a
whole business together. Wow. What
areas are you consulting?
BILL
International trade and commerce.
We’re trying to help new American
businesses enter the global market
place.
TIA
Well, excuse me. Didn’t know you
had all that in that head of yours.

Tia taps his forehead.

BILL
There are lots of things I have
inside of me Tia. Things I want you
to discover. You are of course the
inspiration and motivation behind
my decision to start this company.
Bill grabs her hand.

I should be thanking you. Thank
you, Tia.

You’re welcome, Bill.

after that I felt a sense of
accomplishment so now I spend more
time smelling the roses. Ya know?
BILL
That’s amazing, Tia.
Congratulations. I know you worked
very hard for that. We should do
lunch one day.
TIA
I’d love to. A lot.
BILL
I have to get back to the office. I
have a few meetings before I fly to
LA for a conference. Then more
meetings.
Bill shakes his head at the irony.

TIA
I know how that is.
They laugh.

TIA
I’m so proud of you. It’s strange
listening to you talk like this.
BILL
I imagine so. I’m looking forward
to lunch with you Tia. I really
have to get going.
Bill looks at his watch.

Tia looks at the time on her phone.

TIA
Go ahead. I understand. I’m looking
forward to seeing you too.

They walk their separate ways. They each look back at each
other but keep walking.

36 INT. GYM - DAY

Tia and the girls are at the gym working out. They are
running on the treadmill and she brings up the fact that she
ran into Bill at a coffee shop.

TIA
Guess who I ran into a few days

Gail stops running.

GAIL
Who?
TIA
Bill!

BRENDA
Girl stop playing. He looking good
right?
TIA
Yes! Jeez. And he smelled good.
GAIL
Kate filled me in on his new job. I
told Kate, he must have bumped his
head when y’all broke up.

They chuckle.
TIA
(hesitating)
He asked me out.

GAIL/BRENDA
What you say?
TIA
I said okay. He had a business trip

day or so.
BRENDA
So when exactly are y’all going

me when he got back and that he
missed me.
GAIL
Well is this a new love connection
or what?

TIA
No. Just a meal between two
friends.
BRENDA
Yeah okay. We will see how that
plays out. You’re gonna fall knee
deep again. Just like last time.
TIA
Nah. It’s just dinner.

BRENDA
Right. Love never dies.
TIA
Whatever. Girls finish your
workout.
BRENDA
I’m just saying...

The girls start back on the treadmills.

37 EXT. FORT GREENE PARK - DAY
Bill is running with he boys talking about him and Tia
running into each other.

BILL
So while I was in Park Slope the
other day, you will never guess
which ex of mine I ran in to.

RICH
Not this again. Why every time we
start a good run, you have to start
in on your love life. Damn.

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 51.

BILL
Well, I’m sorry I was just hoping I
could confide in my boys that’s
all.
RAY
Go ahead man. Forget this guy. What
happened?

BILL
Well I was buying a cup of coffee
when guess who walks in.
RAY
Who?

BILL
Tia!
RAY
(surprised)
What happened?
Bill smiles
BILL
Man she was fine!

RICH
She’s always been fine. Tell us
something we don’t already know.

RAY
Shut up Rich.
He nods to Bill.
RAY
Finish your story man.
BILL
Thank you. She made partner at her
firm.

RICH
Well, we knew she was going to get
that after she ditched you to get
it.
RAY
Seriously dawg, this is the last
time you rolling with us. Just shut
up.

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 52.

RICH
I’m just telling it like it is.
Don’t get your panties in a bunch.
RAY
Anyway. Bill...
BILL
She said she slowed down a bit
after making partner.

RAY
That’s cool. Did you tell her about
the consulting firm?
BILL
Yes. I did. She was impressed. She
really spoke highly of it. And...I
asked her out.
RICH
We knew that.

James and Bill give him the side eye.

RAY
One more time, man.
Ray holds up one finger.

RICH
I’m just tying to figure out what
he asked her out for.

They tune Ray out.

RAY
Did she agree.
BILL
Yeah man. She did. I just don’t
know when I’m going to call her to
set a date.
RICH
(mumbling)
Never
RAY
Why do you always have something
negative to say?

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 53.

RICH
Because it’s my mouth and the only
that’s going to happen is that he’s
going to fall in love again and
before you know it we will be back
a the bar picking up little pieces
of Billy Boy.
Ray shakes his head.
RAY
You really are stupid.
Rich shrugs his shoulders.
BILL
No Rich. I think you’re wrong this
time. All relationships don’t end
in disaster. Stop thinking every
woman is like Lisa.
Rich stops in his tracks.

RICH
What did you say? I know you didn’t
say the "L" word. Tell me he didn’t
just say the "L" word.
RAY
Yup. He said Lisa.
Rich frowns at Ray.
BILL
I mean you can’t measure every
woman like that Richie. Remember I
was around you when you and Li..her
were in romantic bliss. I was also
there after it ended and you became
bitter. Ive seen you from both
places man. It’s nothing wrong with
falling and it’s clear that you hit
the ground hard. It’s cool. It’s
just time to get back in the race.
You’re cheating yourself.

RICH
(to Ray)
Who is this guy?
Ray laughs and gives Bill a pound.

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 54.

BILL
It’s still me dawg. The real
question you should be asking is
who are you?

Bill jogs off faster leaving the other guys behind.

Rich looks over to Ray and trails off behind Bill.
Ray follows suit.

FADE OUT
38 INT. MARKETING FIRM - DAY
Back at Tia’s office she’s in the middle of a meeting when
her secretary tells her she has a call. She finishes her
meeting and heads to the phone.
TIA
Ms. Moore speaking.
BILL
Good afternoon, Ms. Moore.
Tia grins.
TIA
Good afternoon. Who am I speaking
with?
BILL
This is Bill.
TIA
Bill who? I know quite a few.
BILL
Oh really?

TIA
(giggling)
I know who this is. What do you
want, sir? I’m heading into a
meeting.

BILL
I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to
interrupt. I just wanted to know if
I could steal you away for lunch.

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 55.

TIA
I would love to but I can’t. I have
meetings all through lunch today.
But I’m free tomorrow.

BILL
Tomorrow is my busy day.
They get quiet.
SPLIT SCREEN OF THE TWO OF THEM IN THOUGHT

BILL
But, I’ll rearrange my schedule for
you. So tomorrow it is.
TIA
(smiling)
Okay, you. I have to go. But I
can’t wait to see you.
She smiles

TIA
Have a good day.
BILL
You too babe.

39 EXT. RESTAURANT PATIO - DAY

The next day they meet at a nice spot on Carroll Street.
TIA
How’s business?
She picks at her salad. Her eyes on Bill.
Bill squeezes lemon in his water.

BILL
Very good. I’m really enjoying
helping businesses expand their
reach.
TIA
When you said over the phone
yesterday that today’s lunch
wouldn’t work for you, It made me
think of when we first met. How you
might have felt every time I told
you I couldn’t do something because
of work. Then you turn around and

TIA (cont’d)
adjust your schedule so easily for
me. I loved that.
Bill smiles. He waits for the waitress to hand him his food.
Before speaking.
BILL
That’s the good thing about being
your own boss. You get to make the
rules.

TIA
(looking over her food)
Do you ever find yourself breaking
those rules?

BILL
Not often. I’ve never had a reason
to.
He looks at Tia in her eyes.

TIA
Well being a partner in a firm
allows me the luxury of breaking a
few rules a time or two.

BILL
(in a serious voice)
I don’t believe you’ve ever broken
a work rule in your life.
He looks at her and smiles.

BILL
What kind of rules do you break?
TIA
Like, take a long lunch, go home,
pack some bags and go to Miami.
Tonight. Enjoy the sun and the
beach.
Bill mouth falls open.

BILL
Impressive. But I have meetings
lined up all week. As much as I
would really love that...

Tia puts her fork down and Bill stops talking.

(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 57.

TIA
Look, you’ve got to learn to relax
a little and take some time to
smell the roses.

BILL
Now, where have I heard that
before?
TIA
I don’t know but it was damn good
advice. I’ve had to take it myself.
So...
She grabs his hands and uses her thumbs to rub his knuckles.

TIA
Is it a date.
BILL
It’s a date.

Bill signals the waiter.

TIA
I’m not done.
BILL
Yes you are. We’re taking this to
go. I need to get you home now. And
in few hours we can pack and head
out.
Bill pays the tab and they head out.

BILL
But we’re not heading to Miami.
Let’s make it Paris.
Tia is shocked.

TIA
Paris?
BILL
Yes. Let’s go.
They get up from the table with their bags in hand. They
walk a few steps and look over their shoulders at the camera
and smile.
