CE 3610 Design Report for Office Building

This design report summarizes the term project to design the structural members of a 3-story office building according to LRFD steel design provisions. The building was designed for dead, live, and seismic loads. Steel grade 50 was used. Design standards included AISC, UBC, and IBC codes. A summary table shows member sizes designed to resist tributary loads. The total project cost was estimated at $12.15 million. Bracing was designed to distribute seismic story forces to the foundation according to code.

Design Report (Term Project CE 3610)

Description:
This was the term project of CE 3610 in which we have to design the different members of 3 story office
building according to the provisions for structural requirement for LRFD for steel set forth in AISC
manual. All the loadings on roof was given and we have to distribute the loading on beams, girders and
columns to find the appropriate sections that can resist the applied loading. The building was checked
on dead loads, live loads and seismic loads in addition of deflection checks. The steel grade used in this
project was Grade 50 (ASTM A992).

Design Standards:
The design standards used for designing of office building includes:

1: AISC 2015 (American Society of Steel Construction)

2: UBC 97 (Uniform Building Codes)

3: IBC 18 (International Building Code)

Project Design Calculation:

Total Cost of the project:
The total cost of the project is:

Discussion:
As a designer we can directly influence safety. We must take account of the General Principles of
Prevention when preparing designs. The General Principles of Prevention are set out in descending
order of preference as follows:

 Avoid risks.
 Evaluate unavoidable risks.
 Combat risks at source.
 Adapt work to the individual, especially the design of places of work
 Adapt the place of work to technical progress.
 Replace dangerous articles, substances, or systems of work by non-dangerous or less dangerous
articles, substances, or systems
 Use collective protective measures over individual measures
 Develop an adequate prevention policy
 Give appropriate training and instruction to employees.

We permit the use of materials known to be less hazardous. We avoid processes that create hazardous
fumes, vapors, dust, noise or vibration, including disturbance of existing asbestos, cutting chases in
brickwork and concrete, unnecessary breaking down cast in-situ piles to level or scrabbling concrete. We
specify the use of easy to handle materials. design block paved areas to enable mechanical handling and
laying of units. We design access areas to accommodate work-at-height equipment.

The system was design to carry both gravity loads that includes (Dead and Live loads) as well as the
lateral loads due to seismic forces. The gravity loads are applied to the structures to design them and
then the story forces and base shear was calculated according to the IBC. These story forces then
transferred to the bracing where they can transmit these forces directly to the foundation. The
structural main members were designed according to AISC provisions.
We can use the symmetric bracing in the building that will used to distribute the forces equally. The
bracing location matters a lot. We can provide the bracing in first bays from where the effect of the
seismic forces is larger.
