Chapter Two: Part:02 Title Chapter
Theory X Theory Y
Motivation: Motivation comes from the work “to move”. Motivation is an act or process
giving someone a reason for doing something.
Intensity- wish to do something.
Direction- Provide the proper lead.
Persistence- survival matter.
The job of a manager in the workplace is to get things done through employees. To do this the
manager should be able to motivate employees. But that's easier said than done! Motivation
practice and theory are difficult subjects, touching on several disciplines. Human nature can be
very simple, yet very complex too. An understanding and appreciation of this is a prerequisite to
effective employee motivation in the workplace and therefore effective management and
leadership. Quite apart from the benefit and moral value of an altruistic approach to treating
colleagues as human beings and respecting human dignity in all its forms, research and
observations show that well motivated employees are more productive and creative.
To motivate the employees and get best performance for the organization Grameenphone use
some theory which is very effective for achieving their goal.
Theory Y
Theory Y provides positive statement regarding human being.
• Work is as natural as play and rest who like to work.
• People will exercise self-direction if they are committed to the objectives (they are NOT
lazy).
• Commitment to objectives is a function of the rewards associated with their achievement.
• People learn to accept and seek responsibility.
17
• Creativity, ingenuity, and imagination are widely distributed among the population. People
are capable of using these abilities to solve an organizational problem.
• People have potential
Implication of Y theory on Gameenphone
Grameenphone uses the theory Y in the employee motivation process. It gives them opportunity
to work independently. It believes that the employees have the creativity, ingenuity, potential and
self-direction to treat the customers and they take responsibility for their own interest. Sharing
ideas and views with employees and taking an effective and efficient decision with the
participation of employee is a common phenomenon here. When employee get proper
motivation, and become highly satisfied they can do everything for the organization with all the
have for their personal growth and organizational goal. Grameenphone give all opportunities to
their employee that’s why employee do their duty properly and Grameenphone become first
telecommunication network in Bangladesh.
Theory X
Theory X provides negative statement regarding human being.
• People have an inherent dislike for work and will avoid it whenever possible.
• People must be coerced, controlled, directed, or threatened with punishment in order to
get them to achieve the organizational objectives.
• People prefer to be directed, do not want responsibility, and have little or no ambition.
• People seek security above all else.
In an organization with Theory X assumptions, management's role is to coerce and control
employees.
18
Implication of X theory on Gameenphone
When an emergency situation creates in the organization Grameenphone tends to take or apply
theory X for the better interest of the organization. High official decision, strategically formulas
and to protect organization from some uncared employees Grameenphone sometimes apply
theory X. When It apply X theory employee become dissatisfied and demotivated.
Herzberg Two factor theory
Hygiene Factor & Motivation Factor
Hygiene or Dissatisfies: This factor includes extrinsic factor which satisfied people externally.
• Working conditions
• Policies and administrative practices
• Salary and Benefits
• Supervision
• Status
• Job security
• Co-workers
• Personal life
Implication of Hygiene factor on Grameenphone
As a leading telecommunication company Grameenphone seems to be more careful about their
standards of service and customer satisfaction. Dissatisfactory factors are generally not found but
sometime policies and personal life factors create some dissatisfactory condition in the
organization
19
Motivation or Satisfaction
• Recognition
• Achievement
• Advancement
• Growth
• Responsibility
• Challenging work
• Job title
Implication of Motivation factor on Grameenphone
Motivating factors often are easily found in the Grameenphone as a leading company in this
sector. Employees feels motivated with the statue, recognition such as the company always uses
“we” in its recognition stage. Continuous growth and shareholder’s eagerness to this company
motivates employee to have a chance to work with such a company.

Though GP is well-established organization but their employees are dissatisfied, So, GP’s manager
can be counseling with their employees to find out the reasons of their dissatisfaction and can solve
all of their problems.
They should not create more pressure and GP should maintain international working hours.
To improve their organizational performance, they should be counseling a day in a week or a
month. They should create more opportunity for female.
They should create more opportunity for other universities/institutes those are not well-known.
GP’s top manager should more cooperative with their employees then their employees will
comfortable to work and also feel motivate.
Obviously, GP should become more human and considerate of employees’ all of problems what
they are facing in the organization and also, they can hire a psychologist for regular check-up
employee’s mental health like Navana and Beximco.
In short, GP should more concentrate on their employees otherwise a situation can be arisen which
known as “Burnout”. In this situation employees become detached from their clients and their
work and feel unable to accomplish their desirable goals.
