Fuzzification Process Explained

Fuzzification is the process of converting crisp (precise numerical) inputs into fuzzy values that can be understood by a fuzzy system. This is done using membership functions to determine the degree to which the crisp inputs belong to various fuzzy sets like low, medium, and high. The fuzzification module specifically performs this conversion by first scaling the inputs and then applying fuzzification functions to map the crisp values to fuzzy memberships. This allows the fuzzy system to then evaluate the fuzzy rules and provide an output.

What is Fuzzification?

Fuzzification is the process of converting a crisp input value to a fuzzy value that is performed by
the use of the information in the knowledge base. Although various types of curves can be seen in
literature, Gaussian, triangular, and trapezoidal MFs are the most commonly used in the
fuzzification process. These types of MFs can easily be implemented by embedded controllers.

What is Fuzzification module?

The fuzzification module converts the crisp values of the control inputs into fuzzy values. A fuzzy
variable has values, which are defined by linguistic variables (fuzzy sets or subsets) such as low,
medium, high, slow, where each is defined by gradually varying membership function.

The fuzzification module (FM) performs the following functions:

• FM-F1: Performs a scale transformation (i.e., an input normalization) which maps the physical
values of the current process state variables into a normalized universe of discourse (normalized
domain). It also maps the normalized value of the control output variable onto its physical domain
(output denormalization). When a non-normalized domain is used then there is no need for FM-Fi.

• FM-F2: Performs the so-called fuzzification which converts a pointwise (crisp), current value of a
process state variable into a fuzzy set, in order to make it compatible with the fuzzy set
representation of the process state variable in the rule-antecedent.

Review:

Fuzzification module transforms the system inputs, which are crisp numbers, into fuzzy sets. This is
done by applying a fuzzification function.
