CHAPTER 4 53 CODE 4.2.3 — For concrete exposed to deicing chemicals, the maximum weight of fly ash, other pozzolans, silica fume, or slag that is included in the concrete shall not exceed the percentages of the total weight of cementi- tious materials given in Table 4.2.3. ‘TABLE 4.2.3—REQUIREMENTS FOR CONCRETE EXPOSED TO DEICING CHEMICALS | ttanimum pareant of — ota coment Comentiious materials TU pper Powztos conioming = os ‘Slag conforming to ASTMC388_—_—_| 50 Sica fume conforming to ASTM C 1240 70 "ll af hy anor rer orzlans, sg, sot Total of fy ash or ofr parzolans and si- ieatume ast rages oor sa te: (aE aeher Sinton eso Te or PH) bende cee, Sap sad ne maura 6 Sor (SM) landed caret, ASTI C Be sears fer ; (9 a ine, ASTI 2 prem nde carat and Ye prcentsapacony oh ta weit he cemersious aera 4.3 — Sulfate exposures 4.3.1 — Concrete to be exposed to sulfate-containing solutions or soils shall conform to requirements of Table 4.3.1 or shall be concrete made with a cement that provides sulfate resistance and that has a maxi- mum water-cementitious material ratio and minimum f¢ from Table 4.3.1 COMMENTARY R4.2.3 — Section 4.2.3 and Table 4.2.3 establish limitations fon the amount of fly asb, other pozzolans, silica fume, and slag that can be included in concrete exposed to deicing chemicals.“ Research has demonstrated that the use of fly ash, slag, and silica fume produce concrete with a finer pore structure and, therefore, lower permeability.” R4.3 — Sulfate exposures 4.3.1 — Conerete exposed to injurious concentrations of sulfates from soil and water should be made with a sulfate- resisting cement. Table 4.3.1 lists the appropriate types of cement and the maximum water-cementitious material ratios and minimum specified compressive strengths for various exposure conditions. In selecting a cement for sul- fate resistance, the principal consideration is its tricaleium aluminate (CA) content, For moderate exposures, Type TI cement is limited to a maximum CyA content of 8.0 percent under ASTM C 150, The blended cements under ASTM C 595 with the MS designation are appropriate for use in mod- trate sulfate exposures. The appropriate types under ASTM C 595 are IP(MS), IS(MS), I(PM)(MS), and I(SM)(MS). For severe exposures, Type V cement with a maximum Cy. content of 5 percent is specified.
