Ulysses
Published in 1922, Ulysses represents a high point of Modernism. It basically tells the story of a
day in the life of Leopold Bloom, who gets up, walks around Dublin meeting various people
including Stephen Dedalus before finally going home to his wife Molly. What really matters in this
story is what happens inside the people, things that happen are not so important. There’s a
particular attention on the psychological side of man and on the exploration of the inner life of
man.
Joyce reproduces a parody of the epic traveling of Ulysses through Bloom’s wandering. Both
stories are setting away from the home of the protagonist and are about voyage, different places
and people. But while in the Odyssey the protagonist is a hero wandering around the world in
Ulysses the main character, a middle-aged Jewish, is wandering around Dublin; the world seems to
become smaller, there’s no hero just people go here and there without any direction.
