Glycerin and Carbon Tetrachloride Properties

The document provides 9 problems involving calculations of weight, mass, density, specific weight, specific gravity, and rate of acceleration for various objects and substances. The problems require using formulas such as W=ma, ρ=m/V, Υ=W/V, and s.g.=Υ substance/ Υwater to solve for missing values. Calculations are shown for finding properties of glycerin, carbon tetrachloride, ethyl alcohol, water, oil, and a rock given information like mass, volume, density, and applied forces.

  • Numerical Problems and Solutions: This section presents various physics problems involving calculations of weight, mass, density, and other physical properties along with their respective solutions.

PROBLEMS

 1. A reservoir of glycerin (glyc) has a mass of 1200kg and a volume of

0.952m3. Find the glycerin’s weight (W), mass density (ρ), specific weight (ϒ), and
specific gravity (s.g.).

F = W = ma

(1200)(9.81) = 11,770 N   or   11.77 KN

ρ = m/V

ρ = 1,200/0.952 = 1,261 kg/m3

ϒ = W/V

ϒ = 11.77/0.952 = 12.36 KN/m3

 s.g. = ϒglyc / ϒH2O at 4°C

s.g. = 12.36/9.81 = 1.26

2.  A body requires a force of 100 N to accelerate it at a rate of 0.20 m/s2.

Determine the mass of the body in kilograms and in slugs.

F = ma

100 = (m)(0.20)

m = 500 kg   or   500/14.59 = 34.3 slugs

3.  A reservoir of carbon tetrachloride (CCI4) has a mass of 500 kg and a volume
of 0.315 m3. Find the carbon tetrachloride’s weight, mass density, specific weight,
and specific gravity.

F = W = ma

F = W = (500)(9.81) = 4,905 N  or  4.905 KN

ρ = m/V

ρ = 500/0.315 = 1,587 kg/m3

ϒ = W/V

ϒ = 4.905/0.315 = 15.57 KN/m3

s.g. = ϒglyc / ϒH2O at 4°C

s.g. = 15.57 /9.81 = 1.59

4.  The weight of a body is 100 lb. Determine (a) its weight in newtons, (b) its
mass in kilograms, and (c) the rate of acceleration [in both feet per second (ft/s2)
and meters per second (m/s2)] if a net force of 50 lb is applied to the body.

W = (100)(4.448) = 444.8 N

F = W = ma

444.8 = (m)(9.81)

m = 45.34 kg   or   45.34/14.59 = 3.108 slugs

F  = ma

50 = (a)(3.108)

a = 16.09 ft/s2   or   (16.09)(0.3048) = 4.904 m/s2

5. The specific gravity of ethyl alcohol is 0.79. Calculate its specific weight (in
both pounds per cubic foot and kilonewtons per cubic meter) and mass density
(in both slugs per cubic foot and kilograms per cubic meter).

ϒ = (0.79)(62.4) = 49.3 lb/ft3

ϒ = (0.79)(9.79) = 7.73 KN/m3

ρ = (0.79)(1.94) = 1.53 slugs/ft3

ρ = (0.79)(1000) = 790 kg/m3

6. A quart of water weights about 2.08 lb. Compute its mass in slugs and in
kilograms.

F = W = ma

2.08 = (m)(32.2)

m = 0.0646 slug   or   (0.0646)(14.59) = 0.943 kg

7. One cubic foot of glycerin has a mass of 2.44 slugs. Find its specific weight in
both pounds per cubic foot and kilonewtons per cubic meter.

F = W = ma

F = W = (2.44)(32.2) = 78.6 lb

Since the glycerin’s volume is 1 ft3:

ϒ = 78.6 lb/ft3 = (78.6)(4.448)/0.30483 = 12,350 N/m3    or   12.35 KN/m3

8. A quart of SAE 30 oil at 68 °F weighs about 1.85 lb. Calculate the oil’s specific
weight, mass density, and specific gravity.

V = 1/(4)(7.48) = 0.03342 ft3

ϒ = W/V

ϒ = 1.85/0.03342 = 55.4 lb/ft3

ρ = ϒ/g

ρ = 55.4/32.2 = 1.72 slugs/ft3

s.g. = ϒoil / ϒH2O at 4°C

s.g. = 55.4/62.4 = 0.888

9. The volume of a rock is found to be 0.00015 m3. If the rock’s specific gravity is
2.60, what is its weight?

ϒrock = (2.60)(9.79) = 25.5 KN/m3

Wrock = (25.5)(0.00015) = 0.00382 KN   or   3.82 N
