Purpose
Act as the central support for the tower, requires for
there to be an exterior column, stabilizes against
winds and seismic waves (primary, secondary, long
waves)
Buildings that have concrete cores are supported by
outriggers
Outriggers - large braces that form triangles and are
horizontal and diagonal extending from the core to
the perimeter column ( 20 perimeter columns work
with outriggers)
Together, outriggers and column support the concrete
core making it withstand vertical and horizontal force

The tower needed to resist as much as 13.2 million pounds of
force pulling up and 25 million pounds pushing down

stress on the concrete that it can withstand

Use buckling-restrained brace that absorb energy
What is a buckling-restrained brace?
A long steel bar encased in a steel box filled with
concrete, locked into the walls
Allows for the building to stretch or compress when it
moves
Coating allows it stay straight under pressure
Replacing the horizontal braces of the outriggers with
one or more buckling-restrained brace prevents stress
on the core
