Heritage from Below Seminar 2018

The title of this year's Micropolitics seminar refers to the concept of "heritage from below" borrowed from historian Ian J. Robertson. Robertson defines heritage as people - both collectives and individuals - and their sense of inheriting the past and how they apply that inheritance. The concept of "heritage from below" suggests that while heritage is not financially independent, there are ways of engaging with the past in the present that are only minimally related to economic concerns and can serve as cultural resources for counterhegemonic practices. The critique of contemporary academic work on heritage theory is that it is often "seduced" by nationalist, hierarchical, and commercial influences rather than grassroots practices.
