Freud, Piaget, Harter: Key Theories on Self

Sigmund Freud developed psychoanalysis, which views personality as being composed of the id, ego, and superego. The id operates on the pleasure principle, the ego balances id and reality, and the superego incorporates social norms. Jean Piaget's theory of cognitive development proposed that children progress through sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational, and formal operational stages as their mental processes reorganize due to biological and environmental factors. Susan Harter argued that self-concept develops from focusing on observable qualities in early childhood to more complex traits and possible selves in adolescence and adulthood.
