Design of Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor For High Voltage Controllability and Flexibility

This document discusses the design of a Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor (TCSC) for flexible high voltage transmission. TCSCs can improve power transmission stability, voltage regulation, reactive power balance, and reduce losses. The proposed TCSC system uses a thyristor-controlled reactor in series with a capacitor bank to provide a smoothly variable series capacitive reactance. This allows increasing transmission capacity and improving voltage stability compared to existing systems. The hardware for the TCSC prototype includes TRIACs, driver ICs, capacitors, a PIC microcontroller, regulator, and diodes. TCSCs can be applied to power grids to enhance transmission capacity and control.

DESIGN OF THYRISTOR CONTROLLED SERIES CAPACITOR FOR

HIGH VOLTAGE CONTROLLABILITY AND FLEXIBILITY.

ABSTRACT
In this project a series controller from the Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS)
family called as ‘Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor’ (TCSC) is explained and designed using
PIC microcontroller. In cases of long distance transmission, as in interconnection of power
systems, care has to be taken for safeguarding of synchronism as well as stable system voltages
in the interconnection, particularly for extreme load conditions and in conjunction with system
faults. Use of TCSC as FACTS device brings a number of benefits for the user of the grid, all
contributing to an increase of the power transmission capability of new as well as existing
transmission lines. These benefits include improvement in system stability, voltage regulation,
reactive power balance, load sharing between parallel lines and reduction in transmission losses.

BLOCK DIAGRAM
EXISTING SYSTEM
To meet the ever growing demand for bulk power transmission over long distance, one
solution is to build HVDC transmission lines. On the other hand increasing the capacity of
existing transmission lines can achieve the same objective. There are many more AC lines than
DC lines in today’s power networks. Technical renovation could greatly enhance the utilization
of existing AC lines, which can be more cost effective than building new lines. One of the main
approaches to meet the transmission requirements is to improve the usage and capacity of
existing lines.

DISADVANTAGES OF EXISTING SYSTEMS

 Cost and complexity is high

 Requires high maintenance

 Reactive power control is not much effective

PROPOSED SYSTEM

The presented TCSC device comprises of a series capacitor bank, shunted by a Thyristor
Controlled Reactor (TCR), to provide a smoothly variable series capacitive reactance. It is a one-
port circuit in series with transmission line; it uses natural commutation; its switching frequency
is low; it contains insignificant energy storage and has no DC port. Insertion of a capacitive
reactance in series with the line’s inherent inductive reactance lowers the total, effective
impedance of the line and thus virtually reduces its length. As a result, both angular and voltage
stability gets improved.

ADVANTAGES OF PROPOSED SYSTEM

 Power transmission capacity and

 Improve the voltage stability.
 Power flow control
 Reactive power compensation
 Mitigation of sub synchronous resonance risk
