INTRODUCTION
According to (Erick 2014) he says that most employers always want to do right by their
employees but in some instances some may behave in ways that probe to be problematic.
Companies set policies and regulations to ensure that their employees are treated fairly and that
they are in return respected, the rules are the ones that keep the organisation running smoothly.
When rules are broken managers should step into finding out why it happened and discipline the
employee in the best possible manner. However every company should have policies such as
thoroughly discipline policy that is shared with each employee and outline the disciplinary
actions that will be taken if his or her behavior or conduct becomes problematic. And a good
policy can help a company avoid problems that could have negative impact on its employees and
the business.
He adds on to say that a policy can help an organisation achieve the following;
1. Set high standards - Having an established policy that is well set known to all
employees and applied fairly can help set standards of conducts among workers. As most
relationships of employer-employee most relationships of employers must operate on a
foundation of trust and understanding. A policy can help foster values of the organisation
as long as it is fairly drafted and implemented.
2. Correct Behavior – Many are the times an employee can violet a rule or act in a way
outside the norm unknowingly or even to test boundaries.
3. Avoid Problems – Addressing policy violations and misconducts early is the best way to
avoid bigger problems later.
4. Prevent Lawsuits – One of the most important reasons for a good disciplinary policy is
that it allows you to handle policy violations in a manner that will prevent future lawsuits.
Above all know how to formulate work place discipline policy and what to include in it is the
first step towards establishing a process for disciplinary actions with your company. However
this can only be achieved if the following steps are taken into consideration;
Review of the employee hand book to exactly what employees are expected to do and
how they are expected to behave.
Set progressive discipline process and outline it carefully in the policy. This will clarify
on how incidents will be handled by managers and employees
Finally include specific guidelines for managers and supervisors who have to enforce the
policy. Make sure that they understand the policies and the process thoroughly and stress
the importance of being consistent with employer.
He concludes by saying that a proper workplace disciplinary policy is not just good for
employers and mangers. It is about setting a good standard of behavior and outlining a clear
disciplinary process is also a good for business.
It is against this research proposal introduction that I will carry out a research on “Work
Policies, Rules and Procedures and the effect they have on employee’s behavior in an
organisation” and my case study will be at Lusaka City Council.
