Pronouns and Kinds of Pronouns

A pronoun is a word used in place of a Noun.

Kinds of Pronouns

1. Personal Pronouns- Pronouns that stand for persons or things.

Eg- Monica is a brilliant girl. She is the favourite of all the teachers.

2. Demonstrative Pronouns – Pronouns used to point out the objects they refer to.

Eg-Those are beautiful flowers.

3. Interrogative Pronouns – Pronouns used to ask questions

Eg- What do you need?

4. Reflexive Pronouns – Pronouns ending in –self or –selves that are used as receiver of an
action.

Eg- They blamed themselves.

5. Emphasising Pronouns – Pronouns used to convey emphasis on who does the action in a
particular sentence.

Eg- She herself called me.

6. Possessive Pronouns – Pronouns that show possession.

Eg- That suit is yours.

7. Distributive Pronouns – Pronouns that refer to persons or things one at a time.

Eg- Neither of the accusations is true.

8. Relative Pronouns – Pronouns that relate a noun to a group of words that follow.

Eg- This is the man who helped me.

Ex 1. Replace the underlined nouns with suitable pronouns:

1. Amit and Kunal are travelling to London tonight. This is Amit and Kunal’s maiden trip
abroad. Amit and Kunal are very excited.

2. Vijay and Raghav are junior scouts. Vijay and Raghav go camping sometimes. Mr. Rai
accompanies Vijay and Raghav and the others. Mr. Rai is the Scout Master.

3. My father is very fond of his car. My father drives the car himself.

4. Joy is my best friend. Joy and I live in the same colony. Joy and I study in the same school.
Joy and I are in the same class.
